Dave injured his voice really bad and couldn't sing and John had wrote and recorded almost the entire album himself. John even sang the entire album and you can hear his voice layer underneath David Coverdale's vocals as they had David Coverdale sing over John's vocals.

I’ve been trying to nail this tone using a Katana Mk2 100wt and a ‘88 Ibanez 540P with a dual sound/and hs2s. I like the katana cause it’s simple and works for most things but I’m having a hard time getting the right thickness. I recall reading somewhere John used 2/3 amps and one of them he left a wah on and cocked hence the thickness. I proved that by putting on the wah effect on the katana and it made it TO THICK. I used to have pedals but I sold them once I got the katana because it works perfectly for me! I will have to get this pedal tho! Much cheaper then looking at a mahogany based Ibanez (Ibanez fanboy sorry) like a RG520QM or a late 80s 540S. Thank you! Someday I will get a black LP Custom tho because of John. :)

@@danaeverhart6487 the plexi kit i got from Modulus Amps in the UK. The SLO and Purple#39 kits from Epic Amps in the USA (they are no longer selling kits). There are a number of other companies that do them also.

Run a stereo setup with that pedal on one side and the Friedman irx on the other with Mr chorus on that side only on the 87 pedal side use a delay and thank me later)

Hi Jay. I would liked to have heard just the pedal without any further processing. That said, what other effects are you using? Reverb,delay,chorus….? Maybe a demo showing a signal chain of pedals.

Hi, effects were very simple - just some reverb and delay added in at the mix stage - IK Multimedia Tape Echo and Sunset Sound Reverb.. Thats usually all I use on my guitars,. Hope that helps. Have a great day.

looks like the stock Wilkinson WVHZ humbuckers which come on the AFD100

Hey Khalil, yep as Chris said - stock Wilkinson pickups - I changed the pots and all the wiring when I got the guitar which improved the tone a lot. Have an awesome day!

Hey Mitch, no more voiced towards the Mesa Boogie MK4/Colosseum amps. Bass response is tighter and the highs and upper mids are voiced differently to an 800. Hope that helps. Have an awesome day and glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Tim, so so sorry to hear about the divorce 🙏 I can only imagine the challenges and stresses of that 🙏 For drums I use Toontrack Superior 3 and create the tracks in Logic Pro X. Bass tracks I either record them myself or use Toontrack EZBass and program them too. For these backing tracks I used the backing track method on this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKXIf5uchsuDbpI - its a quick way to get full backing tracks done. John never used any pedal on '87 album tone. And that is not his tone. Sorry but this is the truth.

I appreciate you checking out the video. As you’ve rightly said, John Sykes didn’t use a pedal but used a Mesa Boogie Colosseum amp. The 87 pedal has been designed to emulate the tone of that amp and I think it does a pretty good job of that. Although I didn’t dial up the exact same tone, the pedal does have the vibe and flavour of the Colosseum amp, well to my ears anyway. It’s a great pedal. I still enjoy playing it. Have a great day.
