Kim Thayil taught me how to play in the 90’s. Soundgarden were masters of alt tuning
@greg61627 ай бұрын
I think Chris Cornell is my favorite rock star period. I grew up in the 90’s and we listened a lot of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin and classic rock in general. But Chris Cornell is my favorite all around rock star. He does everything so well… he’s a great guitar player, his songs are so melodic and he had success with any band he plays in… but his voice is just pure candy for the ears. So unique and beautiful pitch… the only other voice that could compete with his is Brad (who also had perfect pitch) Nowell from Sublime. He’s not as accomplished musically due to his 1996 death about 3/months after they released their self titled album which killed and pushed them firmly into mainstream and on the radio. The first thing I ever learned on guitar was Sublime “Santeria” solo. It took three weeks to get it down and within 6/months I had it at 90% but I never practiced chords until I started jamming with some guys at work. Took me a week to learn to play power chords while muting the low E string standing. Open chords are so hard… especially the C chord. I still mute strings and my D transition is slow, but my 3/finger G chord is great for a little over year playing.

You should be a college professor teaching a master class of the tones and songs of Seattle.. always fantastic! Kim Thayil was and still is one of those guitar players that thinks outside boxes and always sounds amazing. Chris as well was such a great filler of notes. Combined they truly was ahead of so many in my eyes. Simplistic but complex. Love that band.

Question if you don’t mind- I am sure I remember Chris playing Mailman on a Tele, which I could never get my head around- it always sounds too thin to me. Do you reckon you could get that ungodly sound out of a Tele if you use the magical grunge pedal?

Let's Play All well I got the Grunge pedal and it kind of works. I don’t know why it had never occurred to me that for that early stuff all you needed was a cheap pedal with a stupid amount of fizz and treble. I like it with your settings though I’m not sure the knobs on mine actually do anything at all...
