I know that Alex does the production (with a lot of help from other producers), but they still do it, and Drew sings and plays the guitar (even Live), so I wouldn't call them untalented.. So he is still playing the 3 triads C major D major and E minor. However, in the Daw he is playing a D an octave higher with every chord. this makes the Cmajor into some sort of Cadd9 (although i think a proper C9 is supposed to have the 7th in it to). a Dmajor with a two Ds an octave apart. And an Eminor7 with the 7th coming an octave higher. On top of this, guitar is playing the notes G and D over and over, this makes the consistent D throughout the song work even more. Also, he pitched All Star up so it is sung in the Key of G. Cmajor Dmajor and Eminor(the piano part) are the IV, V and VI of G so playing the 5th of G aka D through out the song makes even more sense. These are just my opinions on why it works well. If someone knows a better answer, feel free to correct me!
