I think it's cute you're self conscious about using audio software from '07 when we're using typewriters from several decades ago.

Once in college my roommate kicked me out of my dorm room for typing late into the night to finish a term paper due the next day. So I moved into the totally tiled bathroom across the hall, sitting on a commode with my SCM Classic 12 on my lap, and wound up waking up half the floor.

I add a piece of construction paper as a backing sheet and have found that helpful.,along with a typing pad under. I have added the peel and stick felt to the inside of the panels. Making a definite difference. I have noticed getting a platon done at jjshort also as a big difference in sound also,but it's a lot more cost compared to the cost of felt and pad. Thanks for a very helpful video, grateful for your videos.

This is a great idea. Will keep it in mind for future purchases. I must admit when I've taken my Olympia Traveller Deluxe S out to coffee shops and shopping centres to work on some of my projects I had wondered if the noise might draw attention to me (which I hate) but actually it has been fine. It isn't the noisiest of machines but even so. I feel that when a coffee shop plays music with vocals it is distracting anyway (instrumental or classical means you can chat with friends more easily or concentrate better but many places play songs with singers belting it out at high volume). Nobody has told me to shush. Mind you I would love to be able to type in the library but I'm asking for trouble if I try that lol.

Felt is good idea. Rubber also works pretty well. My Triumph Tippa has grey rubber under the type slugs. However it got a little hard over time so i need to refresh the rubber again and making it smooth with some rubber-refresh chemicals. Your teal 60s Smith Corona is such a lovely little and quiet machine. I really love that compact travel formfactor. The first typewriter i ever used was a really Big and heavy machine from.. god knows when. I can't remember the name anymore but my Parents had it for years but eventually threw it away sadly.. I used to type a lot on that thing as a kid and LOVED it. But i always wanted something smaller and more portable.

Love this…even though I’m in a single family home it’s hard to type when others are sleeping 🙄 Would love to take one to a coffee shop but the noise is a problem ( unless sitting outside) and of course getting too many interruptions from people who are fascinated by typewriters 😂

While interesting to see the sound waves in the DAW, it might have been good to use a DB meter too? At a pinch, you can get a DB app for your phone, although I'm not sure how accurate it is. This can add actual numbers to your experiments. Having a backing sheet or two might also make a difference, if the platen hardness is the main culprit. I have some adhesive backed foam that I sometimes use on panels like the ribbon cover to stop them rattling, and that too can make a pretty big difference. Loose parts make more noise, so a snug but padded join helps - I think more so than lining the whole inside panel with the stuff... although both can be good!

Yes a decibel meter would also read levels- audio recorders and audio software have that built in as well!

@@AtelierDBurgoyne If you live in Australia, you can get it from Bunnings. Described as "Moroday 100 x 3mm x 5m Medium Adhesive Seal Roll I/N: 4000007". I believe this is used normally for padding doors to make them quieter. So if you are in the US, try a hardware store and ask for door seal rubber rolls. The 3mm thickness is about right, I wouldn't get much thicker. The adhesive is pretty good too - sticky enough to stay where you put it.

The sound of a typewriter is one I've found no one minds. Even my grumpy arsehole uncle I used to rent off didn't mind me typing at 3AM when he had work. He'd complain about music, talking, even coughing or sneezing, but never my typewriter.

My school has something against anything that runs on electricity and/or makes noise. And my handwriting is also so bad that even I struggle to read it. All tho I'm naturally pretty strong (Even tho I don't work out.). So I think a portal or ultraportable typewriter would be handy.

I was very curious about this. I love traveling and writing while traveling. While it's okay using my fountain pens while traveling, I am really uncomfortable with my typewriters! I've been very curious about the noise if I bring my typewriters. I have not found a good answer yet, so my typewriters usually stay home... I read about people typing in coffee-shops. I'd never dare do that: even my most quiet typewriter is too noisy for that. Do I need to be less self-conscious or am I onto something?

Hi Sarah, from what I can tell, it looks like you are using a ribbon with a correcting strip on the bottom on your Skyriter --something I have seen advertised on Ebay. How do you like it? Is it worth filming a review? (From a loyal viewer ;-)
@JustMyTypewriter
@JustMyTypewriter Жыл бұрын
It's actually not a correcting strip! This is from the we r memory keepers line. I bought up all their ribbons a few years ago and have just been slowly cycling through them. This is their black and silver ribbon. This skyriter is a one color machine so I just used this ribbon because the silver side doesn't show up on paper!

@@JustMyTypewriter - interesting. I taught myself to touch type on a non-electric youth typewriter (I refuse to say "manual", as to my mind, a non-manual typewriter is a daisy-wheel printer), whose brand and model I can't remember, and the Silver-Reed 8650 that was my college typewriter. I suppose maybe the Apple II Plus that my dad bought in 1979 could claim a small spot on that list, but I mostly wrote computer programs on that, and since I wasn't an accomplished keyboardist at that point in my life, programming was more of a hunt-and-peck exercise for me. The original Macintosh computers that my college bought in the mid 1980s don't get a spot on the list, because while I did improve my speed and accuracy somewhat on those during my senior year, I had already learned the basics by typing compositions on typewriters.

Video was ok - but as a point of content - if you are going to demonstrate sound differences in a video, it would help if you were not overlaying musical tracks over the testing.
