Thanks! I'm thinking of blocking a large window (5'x12') with 3" rockwool then 2 layers of 1/2" cement board on the outside with green glue between them and stucco over it. The house is concrete block so the walls are OK, but low-frequency engine noise from a nearby major street gets through the window. Some year I'll have enough money for a proper triple pane window.

Living in a manufactured home. 2x6 exterior walls with fiberglass bats and only a 3/8” vinyl over gypsum drywall. Recommendations?? Trying to lessen traffic noise. The next problem is the 3/8” ceiling. Problem with ceiling trusses will not support 5/8” drywall. Would resilient channel and lightweight drywall be worth the expense and effort?

Intriguing problem. You’re lucky because so many old guy content providers are coming along. Can you increase the ceiling thickness without attaching to light trusses? Side mount to wall near ceiling, have metal strips, mount to that. First and foremost is, fire safety. Think. Do not spread fire with inferior materials. Figure a way to be able observe the existing, if ever moisture, you want to know. Leave a pullback so you can check with a flashlight for moisture or critters. That giant company…the guy pays not a dime in tax…they have gold foil floor underlayment. It’s intended as a decoupler to be used under wood or ceramic. I used excess for joists in the basement…confuses the spiders. Used it behind radiators to prevent dust, theoretically transfers the heat back to the room. I didn’t need to staple…just a little tape. Have good pictures….some old guy knows.

We have to use spray foam insulatioon in the room we are making in the attic as using fiberglas or rockwool will require expensive modifications to stop moisture buildup in the roof. So I'm going with spray foam insulation and a layer of mass loaded vinyl with half inch drywall. Hope it works!

Can you put MLV on drywall that has resilient channel under it? Like resilient channel + drywall + MLV + more drywall?

You certainly can. Generally people will place the MLV between two layers of drywall.

Been thinking about how to do it. Mass Loaded Vinyl …I try calling it its proper name…say MLV, not everyone knows what you’re talking about. I want premium birch plywood, thought to attach the MLV to the plywood. Use wing nuts,that way, when put in place, remove wingnut to align, once in the pre-drilled hole, replace wingnut.. Anything to make it easier to install. Have it on the floor to lift in place. Heavier obviously, but only lift it once per sheet. It’s better than having the roll fight you the whole way. MLV is perfect. But because it’s so heavy, it’s a bear to work with. Mass Loaded Vinyl is fire resistant. That should be emphasized more. I worry about the glues….too new to be trusted, and nothing cheap about it. MLV doesn’t need to off-gas like so many materials do, not much smell at all. The guys I got to install found wide tape for the seams, I didn’t think to buy it when I ordered the rolls. Remember….take pictures and file them on your shared drive. A buyer will be impressed. Quality is worth its price. I’ve got floors that are real deal tongue and groove …..pictures to prove it. Love this site….gets ya thinking. We are so so so far behind. Nobody thought about insulation much less soundproofing. New demand for materials and information sharing. And--get off the dime. News of glass that would quiet street noise……sound waves? Send the waves back. Ripple them back. Was supposed to be out ten years ago…where is it?

In all this time…..why aren’t these boxes done at the factory? Of course we’d pay more. You’d think manufacturers would jump at the chance to provide an improvement.
