I am an English teacher from China. I just came across this video which I found it’s super super helpful for EFL teachers because it’s very well explained and informative with lots of real life examples, but I gotta say I can anticipate most EFL learners would feel difficult to follow the fast speed speech in the video. But for English teachers, this is definitely treasures.

I'm an American-born, native speaker AND a subscriber!!! I enjoy your videos, your intelligence and cheery personality. I'm learning a lot about MY language and the principals are helping me with the language learning I'm actively doing on Duolingo. It's interesting how many factors play into how we speak. Growing up in a teacher's family I have more formal habits (cringing when hearing "ain't", for example 😉). Regional differences fascinate me. I am living in a part of the US that my ancestors came from, but was born and raised in a different region of the country. So my children sometimes tease me about words I say differently. Example: bag "bayg". Also, I never understood what 'glottal stop' was until this video. Thank you! And even if I differ on some "sounding native" ideas, I'll keep watching, because it's so good that I'm getting all this out of it. Keep up the good work, Marina!

Thank you for your class, you have a very burning energy. I think I figured out why the word HAND changes to HAM when the next consonant is B and you want to talk fast. I guess it's because the N the tongue touches the palate and moving from that In the state of bringing the lips together for the B, it takes more time than going from M to B. In the M the lips come together just like in the B, so time is saved and greater fluidity is gained.

It's incredible because day by day understand more situations and several words. To be honest i understood almost everything what you said. I decided to study this language a couple days ago and i can see my evolution quickly. I'm focused on interpretation and every single day i talk to myself on the street, at home or whatever.. back in the time i didn't understand understand anything, but now, i do it. I make mistakes a lot obviously, because my first language is the portuguese.. but I'm so proud of myself, i increased a lot my vocabulary and i feel like my english is improving faster.. thanks for sharing your video with us. As a native English speaker I found this super interesting!! I honestly never even noticed I reduced words together like that haha. One thing I would like to say about the word "of" is that it's not really pronounced with an "a" sound more like ouv, like the a is softer? Idk how to explain it but yeah :p and also I would say that the whatcha stuff is a bit exaggerated, it's more subtle, at least where I live in the Pacific Northwest area. Hope this might have helped sorry if it's annoying >-< accent varies a lot in different places of course

Wow Marina ! Incredible job ! I have been learning English for the last 15 years - unfortunately I have never lived in an English-speaking country - and I have just found so many things new in your video. Can / can't, oo and assmilation examples are incredibly useful for me. As a Frenchman, the assimilation is probably the toughest part of English / American. In French, we are used to pronouncing every sound, and never insisting on a specific word in a sentence. In a way way have a monotonous language I suppose but nvm. The good news is I perfectly understood all what you said :) Carry on ! It was an amazing work !

In the Northeastern USA, we speak faster. Mainly due to our accent - or lack there of. The "non-regional American accent." Because of this I find when I am teaching English, I notice that when we slow down or tell someone what we want to clarify something, we will speak slower with more dictation, and as a result we pronounce letters we don't normally say. One common mistake from our area is saying "Should/Could/Would have" and instead the way we say the contraction isn't "Coulda" or "Woulda", but instead "Could of" or "Should of". Due to this way of speaking and often learning by listening as children, we can grow up flipping back and fourth... until your words are in print you often might not know and even then it can be a hard habit to break.

I'm Canadian so this is for any English learners in Canada. Thanking with a shortform such as thanks and 'ppreciate it can sometimes come off as rude in Canada. Normally you should always use a full thank you. If you are really thankful, you can say "Thank you, I really 'ppreciate it!". Also saying "Thanks, 'ppreciate it" is also ordinarily fine. But I wouldn't just say thanks or appreciate it.
