Definitely a psychological aspect. Nervousness, shyness, lack of confidence, all of the Above. I practice in my car as I'm driving. Singing, tongue twisters, random sentences. If people heard me they'd think I was nuts LOL. I also think I'm talking too loud a lot of the time so I think I'm trying to unnaturally subdue my voice. Really helpful video. Thank you

Great lesson! I am actually Finnish though I live in Sweden. I hava suffered all my life having quiet voice. I do recognize that it is partly beacuse I am shy, but even not in the environment like with my family I talk with quiet voice. I was wondering why is that, I heard my voice loud enough for myself, but apparently it is not.

Our experience of our own voice is amplified because we are inside our resonating chamber. We feel and experience the voice in individual ways. Sometimes sending our voice out makes us uncomfortable physically and therefore back away. Finnish placement is really back in the throat but also culturally there is a respect for humbleness abs for keeping yourself to yourself!

Thank you for these tips and exercises. I'm going to try them to gain a more confident voice, as nearly everyone around me asks me to repeat myself, speak louder, or go "huh?" I was that kid that got told to shut up so much that I stopped talking, and I didn't feel safe to express myself (cry, disagree, etc). Now at 30, I'm trying to undo a lot of the learned survival habits that are not serving me anymore. Thank you!

Thank you very much! Especially the part of "holding yourself back" was really helpful. Both me and my father have a really loud, unrestrained, clean and non-hurting voice when we shout, but have very quiet voices when talking to others. Your video helped me to realize that because of that I do associate talking with (I'll call it that way, but probably it's wrong, but I basically mean "open mouth and create space in your body) open throat is considered impolite and shouty in normal conversations. I will soon talk outside in a loud area in a play, that's why I decided to watch this video. I will try to use what I've learned here :)

I LOVE YOU DARREN MCSTAY FOR YOUR ADVICE AND COACHING! Throughout my whole life people have often not heard me when I talk, even when I am making a significant concerted effort to speak as loudly as possible! Do you have any idea how depressing it is, as I am a very social person. My mother has been telling me for years that I should go for Elocution lessons. I have wanted help for a long time, but voice coaching is very expensive. I never looked for help on this issue on KZbin before, and today I decided to see if there are any KZbin videos that can help me. Yours was the first video that came up when I typed the word "enunciation" in the search box. I watched that 3 minute video and clicked the link to this video. I love your personality and your charisma, as well as how much I learned in just 10 minutes from you! I won't even be look for other KZbinrs on this subject. Your advice makes so much sense! Because I am doing KZbin videos I got a body of data that shows how different voices perform with different people. With my own voice people dip out very quick. But when a VA talks on similar content they get much better retention. I have asked my VA what is the problem and he told me it is energy. When I talk into the camera the way I talk to a friend I will have bad results. He said similar stuff like you. I need to be 10x of myself and amp up my voice and make it much more room filling in order to get through to the audience. Otherwise they get bored. So I am now training my voice to be a better speaker.

I take in air but I don’t really know how to use it. I would love to relax, but it’s hard to do on command. The situations where I really want to be heard are usually the most stressful times. Then again, I don’t even project that well when I’m relaxed. If the room is loud and I try to yell, it ruins what I’m trying to communicate. It can get really frustrating. I have friends that have voices that are easily heard across a loud crowded bar even with music playing. I get drowned out by background noise to the point of giving up. People say I’m quiet (as in shy) but it’s kind of pointless to speak in situations where you can’t really be heard. Using my voice more effectively could really be life changing. Your voice really is the way the world perceives us.

1. Mindful of air breathing in / Breathe 2. *Relaxation of muscle & body* = more resonate and vibration (even with emotional speech be mindful of this) 3. *Create Space* in your mouth & Stretch the body/ Open the body --> Bigger Instrument Tip: Yawning --- think of expand and *Open Up the Space* - especially useful when you want to create a more round, Warm voice 4. Articulation exercise 5. Mental Confidence = about yourself. Believe yourself and preparation - sometimes it's culture, shyness, or second language - Note: personality can reflect voice (introvert/shyness; extrovert/excitment) - less Self-conscious ~Practice anywhere~ * Practice to have your voice LOUD or BIG - can go somewhere crowded/loud; or an open space. Somewhere you're comfortable to be loud and creative

This video feels like it was made for me. I am a german rapper and very proud of my lyrics, but when it comes to rapping them, i do not feel confident. The sound lacks power, loudness and dynamic, and to top it of i force myself to rap louder. I watched so many videos to find a way, helping me to improve myself. However, despite of hundreds of hours practising with my voice, I still have been faced with the same problem over and over again. But this video changed the game for me. Now i know what to do to sound naturally powerful and loud. Thank you so much!

Can you make a video about living in Finland? I’ve had thoughts about emigrating from the UK and I’m intrigued about what it’s like 😬

How do we ensure projecting voice while being relaxed? Whenever I try to project. I instantly become tensed! Thank you.

That’s the problem with TRYING to project. And this can’t be solved so easily. I might recommend you take a look at my 8-week course! It covers projection but only after you create new changes in the way you use your body!

Hi, I am from Turkey. I got a bit accent, articulation and mispronunciation problem on some words. In addition to that, I have braces and high pitch voice. I am working at a news agency and trying to improve my voice and articulation and clarity. What are the steps you recommend that I should take? Thank you in advance for your time
