Tried this on my old McCulloch, just bent the flange that the small governor spring is attached to (only a few mm) and it has made the world of difference. The cut is better and the cuttings are thrown to the back of the grass box... thank you for the knowledge.

Another great video all good advice. Also when the blade isn't sharp or it's damaged instead of cutting the grass it will just rip it and that damages the roots as the blades tear instead of cutting that in turn causes the grass to go brown and unsightly. Its amazing how many people would never even think of sharpening the blades they think it's all done by magic and wonder why their lawn looks a mess.

Thanks for your videos. I recently followed your advice to refurb the fuel system on my mower. It's the type with driven wheels and it was hard to start and running so slow I was almost having to push it along, and it was dropping clumps of grass. After cleaning and replacing some parts and sharpening the blades, its much faster, in fact had to slow it down as I was having to run to keep up! For reference here are the parts I changed: Spark plug, air filter, oil, primer bulb, fuel cap, diaphragm, governor springs. Also cleaned the carb, fuel tank and filter housing.

Great video, keep up the excellent work! I once pushed my old Briggs and Stratton 4hp lawnmower to somewhere between 7000-7500rpm with a high lift blade installed and without the grass collector bag installed. Lets just say that observing a lawnmower propell itself forward purely from the thrust it generates out from the "grass ejection port" was a mildly terrifying experience. As this is my "experimental" lawnmower it has been modified several times and is now outfitted with with a more open exhaust (i basicly made the holes in the muffler larger and then drilled some aditional holes) and a "dirtbike/mc type sports air filter", in addition i also fitted a ventilated high flow type (due to the engine having only one cylinder) "Oil catch can" to the engine which now sits between the crank case ventilation and carburettor to test if this will have any effect on carbon buildup inside of the cylinder and valves.

Really enjoy your videos mate and you managed to help me after a lot tinkering about get my qualcast xss41d push mower finally going by suggesting it needed a new carburettor as it uses one those cheap plastic types and I believe there quite prone to problems and you was spot on its now running like a dream or as well as it probably should do! 👍

Brilliant video & explanation as per. Ive got a second hand mower with one of these engines on. Governer springs all in place & moving freely. Changed all the obvious (carb & diaphragm, primer bulb, air filter, spark plug) but still seems a bit spluttery. I did notice the retaining plastic ring that keeps the o-ring in place on the fuel inlet pipe that joins the carb is missing. Would this contribute towards the problem? Thanks.

The man, the legend. Awesome video as always. Just done some maintenance on a champion with a classic 35. My dad used to do all that stuff so just been learning as I go. Mower does seem a lot faster running to the point where it seems too fast so this video was great for that and I'll give it a go tomorrow. This was after a new diaphragm kit, oil change, spark plug and filter. Any suggestions for a tough to pull, clunky sounding recoil/flywheel? Cord moves easily when the recoil and enclosure is removed from the mower. Almost sounds like something is hitting as it's cranked.

Hi Paul or is it Phil Most of the comments are on your successful attempts I picked up a xc35 cheep , but never noticed the alum alloy boss had sheared and would like you to see a photo of the boss. Bought a new one for £18 followed the fitting instructions ie the woodruff key , the casting looked a bit suspect . Started it again and the boss fractured exactly at the point to original one did if I had your email add I could send you photoes, wrote to supplier who offered another at reduced price now wasn’t that nice of him Bob

Mine, which I've had since new, has only got the big spring, it doesn't have the small spring that you're adjusting.

@@MowerMan I've had that Mountfield push-mower for around 25 years, changed the oil once, it's had one new plug (NGK BR2-LM - although there was no real problem with the old Champion one.) and I've renewed the carburettor diaphragm once. I was mowing near our pretty big coniferous hedge the other week and all of a sudden the revs dropped dramatically. (I think a thick twig / trimmed branch in the bush hit something at the front of the mower.) Took the air-filter off to investigate and after a bit of tinkering and head-scratching I noticed that the tab where the big spring is attached to looked a bit more bent than I membered it was, I carefully straightened it back to what I thought it should be with a pair of pointed nose pliers and it's sorted, revs back to near normal. Which is why I then went on youtube to see if I could find an image of how the spring tab was really meant to look like, and came across your video.
