Discover the simple tricks to spool braided fishing line on a spinning reel the right way so you never get those pesky line twists and loops in your line. Spooling a spinning reel with braided line can actually play a role in how far you cast, how long your fishing line lasts, and how many fish you catch.
UPDATE: We published a new and improved article/video showing the top ways to spool with braid while saving time and money... click the link below to see it:
www.saltstrong.com/articles/ho...
For more on the best saltwater fishing videos and fishing how-to, check out www.SaltStrong.com
This video goes into detail on all of the important parts of the spinning reel spooling process. There are quite a few things that can impact your casting and retrieval when it comes to your spooled spinning reel.
Most of all, be sure to have constant tension on the line (both braided line and mono) while reeling it onto the spool. Without the tension, you'll be at risk of having line issues while casting... aka - wind knots.
As mentioned towards the end of the video, it is great to let your line out while idling forward in your boat and let about 100 to 200 ft of line drag without any lure or knots tied to it. This will help ensure that any twists in the line get straightened out.
But make to watch out for boats (or wave runners) behind you as your fishing line could easily get caught in their prop/intake.

Braided line is the best thing that ever happened to spinning gear. I keep four on my deck I normally do fifty percent backing and fifty percent braid. Mono is less expensive than braid plus braid is so tough it lasts longer. Good job on spooling. The leader knot is the critical knot.

You don't have to flip the bale. If you forget, just take off the spool and reseat it after flipping the bale open. No need to cut the line and do it over.

For people fishing rivers, that last tip works the same there - just let out line and let the river current get out any twist you may have. Works for mono just the same, so either way - when you first notice twist in your line, take the lure/bait/hook off and just let out the line and let it hang there a minute or two and you're back to twist free (virtually, anyway) spin fishing. Great video. Thanks for making it. Clearly thousands and thousands of people have found this helpful! :)

Here is another tip. Let's say your spool holds 300 yards of 20 pound braid, but you have a partial spool, say 220 yards or so. That is still a lot of line and you want to use it but you don't want the line to be so low on the spool you can't cast well. Here is what you do--IF you have another spool that is exactly the same size and line capacity. Take the short spool--the 220 yard/300 yard capacity spool. Tie on a mono top shot, right to the edge, dead on. Now, take off the spool, and put on the empty same sized spool. Tie on the mono and then transfer the contents, mono first, (of course) onto the new spool. Logic dictates that the mono, and then Braid will spool onto the new, empty spool. After filling, the BRAID will come completely off right where you want it-to the edge of the new spool.

with two spools of the same capacity if you are short to the lip on your existing spool attatch mono until it is flush to the lip. now attatch the end of that mono to the new spool and wind until the new reel has the perfect amount of line on. (shorter version) amazing idea mate i will be using this tip right now!

Good video, thank you. The one thing people forget when tying onto the spool is creating a strong enough knot that would hold the rod/reel should you lose the rod overboard. If that spool knot breaks--like a square knot would using mono--yer skrewed. A better knot will hold should you get a handle on the line if a rod goes seaward.

Double arbor knot is pretty strong to the point where the tag end will need to be cut if too long. I've just attached braid directly to the spool. Albright knot between braid and fluorocarbon leader and you're all set. I haven't had knots break, the line itself does before the knot.

I finally bought braid line. I watched this tutorial andwas confused so I checked the comments but no one daid anything. You reeled the line clockwise...check. but you also instructed for the line to come off its spool clockwise AND with the spool sticker facing up. The line does not come off the spool clockwise w sticker facing up. Anyway I had someone hold the string spool vertically to split the difference. I tried the line for the first time and I couldnt believe the sensitivity. I did catch a largemouth on the first outing. It ran for a branch and got caught up in it. i reeled them both in no problem. I would have lost the fish with mono. Thanks for the instruction on spooling the line.

When using 5lb power pro, I got massive twist on the line on the line from where I was pinching it all the way onto the reel spool. No twist on the line coming off the line spool and on the line above where I was pinching it. When pulling the line off the drag the it was very tight twist. With the bail arm open and pulling the line off there was no twist so I thought this was OK as this is how the line comes off the reel spool when casting but while casting/fishing, the line twist was still there. Not sure what I was doing wrong??

All my Daiwa or Shimano reels come with user manuals and both makers stress on NOT to apply a line from a flat laying spool on the table like you do but use vertically on a pencil or whatever. Using your way each loop creates one spiral that will backlash during casting making it look like fishing with confetti and ending up with spaghetti! Now, one needs nylon when a spool is designed for more braid than available or intended to use. In such case what I do is put on braid first and than on top of it I continue with nylon until the spool is almost full (depends on reel performance etc.) Then I remove all and wind all back in desired order. Otherwise electrician's tape will do the job. Happy fishing!

Great video(s)! I didn't read all 581 comments, so let me apologize, in advance, if this is a dupe. I like the info here but , I think you are missing a very important advantage to starting off with a single or double layer of mono on the spool. First off, unless you're using 100# test, it will not seriously impact the line capacity. but most importantly, should you tie into a monster, or a shark, or something that could potentially empty your spool, that couple of yards of mono will act as an indicator to warn you of what;s about to happen. A while back, I tied into a beauty of a salmon, using borrowed gear that I found in the garage of the house we were staying at (near Seattle). I made the mistake of not inspecting the gear too closely. The mono it was spooled with was old, oxidized, and brittle, and here wasn't much of it. I was babying the line with this big fish on and, before I knew it, I was fishing "on the knot". Luckily, my daughter-in-law's brother came by and I was able to send him back to the hose for a net and he climbed dome the rocks of the jetty, and netted the fish.

I have an electric line spooler that allows me to remove the spool from the reel and spool it with no twists whatsoever, that being said, you don't want your line twistless on the spool. When you make a cast, the line will twist one turn with every loop off the spool making hundreds of twists between the reel and the end of your line (and your next PB). When you lift your lure out of the water between casts, several twists come out...especially if you have a line-break. In short order, the first hundred foot or so off your reel ends up twisted on the spool anyway. Letting the spinning reel be a spinning reel puts all the twists on the spool and when you cast, the twists come out and you won't have any between the reel and end of line. Then when reeled back in, the reel puts the twists back onto the spool. Best practice is to spool it as you would a baitcaster, applying tension to the filler spool and not holding the line. Tight lines!

big ron you might find youre getting funny drag problems. If you dont tape or put mono backing youre probably going get ghost drag. The whole braid winds will spin on the spool and you wont realise it at first. Take my advice I had braid on all my gear and thought all my drags were out but I knew that was super unlikely.

Great video and great info.I have several questions if I could ask them . Haven't saltwater fished in years and everything today seems a little different. Are new reels such as the Penn Battle II set up to handle braided line without the Monofilament line Pre-load? or do you still recommend pre-loading with mono. and Can the Mono line used for pre-load be of a different pound rating then the pound rating of the braided line. Ex. 20lb mono attached to 80lb Braided any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you
@Saltstrong

Hey George, we're glad to see that you're getting back into fishing. Yes, some of the reel manufacturers are now including a rubber sliver in their spools so it can grip onto the braid allowing for the mono layer to not be needed (however, I often fill the spool a quarter or halfway full with mono to save on braid... since I typically fish via boat, kayak, or paddle board, I can always chase down a fish before it ever gets all the braid out). I've never used the Penn Battle II, but it looks like it has that rubber section, so mono isn't required. Yes, any sized mono can be used as backing and can be connected to the braid... here are some knots you may want to use for that connection - www.saltstrong.com/articles/best-fishing-knot-for-braided-line.

True, you don't need backing, but if you're using say, a 4000 shimano and decide to be ten or 8 pound braid ( some people like to use one reel on multiple rods with just changing the spool. ) then a layer of mono underneath the braid will fill up the spool in case the braid amount you bought doesn't fill the reel. I used to not care about my backer knots either. About a year ago I was smallmouth fishing using 10lb braid to a 6lb fluorocarbon leader to a neko rig senko. I was catching bass all day it was a great day. Then I had a 13 lb striper bite. I have never seen a striper bite something like that, bit this one did. I got me to within a foot of my knot and I was sweating bullets and thinking I was going to lose it. Luckily I was able to tighten my drag down enough to reel him in.

After you are done with putting the line on, take off drag and then spool. Place spool in medium hot water covering the whole spool for about 10 minutes and that will tighten up your line and shrink it down to where you don't have wind knots!!! Dry off and grease up spool again! Mr Hedypoo being fishing for 60 years!

Thanks for the tip. I used to do this when I used mono back in the day, but I didn't continue once I switched to braid assuming it didn't work. I'll give it a shot next time I re-spool. Fish On!

+birenmyron Be sure to give the FG knot a try... it is thinner than the Alberto and has tested to be over 20% stronger too. Here's a test we did on these knots recently: www.saltstrong.com/articles/albright-vs-alberto-vs-fg-knot/.

Some nice, thick electrical tape on the spool will keep the braid from slipping. No need for mono layer.

+Salt Strong if trying to catch larger fish offshore or surf fishing, don't use mono under braid, the braid will sink into the mono and break your line. I suggest using electrical tape or buying a reel that has a rubber strip around the spool

+Matthew Herzog I prefer monofilament. Electrical tape leaves a sticky residue on my spool and I can easily have a much bigger backing with mono so I can use less braid and save more line and money.

@MrTatts64

I use the same method for loading braid onto both fixed spools and multipliers. Only thing I do differently is to use a wet cloth. That way I can really put the braid on nice and tight without fear of it over heating as it goes on the spool. Which as you can imagine, with very light braid / mono / fluoro, heat can potentially be a big problem affecting the lines strength. Other than that, great video, thanks! If you haven't done one already, how about a video on how to ensure your braids "line lay" on the spool is nice and even / level and not in a hugely concave or convex shape??
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comment. Yes, a wet cloth is certainly a necessity for spooling a spinning reel most effectively. In response to your comment about concave or convex issues on the spool… is there a particular spinning reel that you're finding does this frequently. Most spinning reels I've used are pretty good about speeding the line properly.

Salt Strong Hello mate. The problem isn't happening to me - any more. It used to when I first began using braid on fixed spool reels. The problem occurred on almost all the reels I was using at the time. Quite what the actual cause was, I dont know. But I did notice that the reels in question were rated from say X amount of yards of 10lb mono to Z amount of yards of 18lb mono. Even though the braids breaking strain I was using fitted nicely within these parameters, it was the thickness of much much lighter lines than those stated for any of the reels. I cured it simply by basically hand coiling some old or cheap mono into a reverse profile of the concave or convex issue on the reel I was spooling at the time. This way, when the braid went onto the reel, it pretty much levelled itself out by the time the spool was topped off with braid. The reason I said about maybe you doing a video on how you would counter this problem is because of the question from "Teen fishing channel" below. As when I read the question, it was the first thing which came to mind. Something to bear in mind with the problem this young guy's facing is the possibility of a large 8000 size reel perhaps being filled with a braid whose equivalent thickness may be less than the recommended line breaking strains / diameters. Perhaps patiently reverse profiling that line lay may work for him / her. Or maybe as you suggested, the reel is simply faulty by not having the spool and the rotor arm properly lined up with each other. I can hear the voices of some of my peers saying will simply fill the spool with the correct thickness of braid. Bad idea in my opinion. Who wants to go attempting to casting lightweight lures or baits with 50lb to 80lb braid? Not my idea of being fun or sporting if you should manage to hook a fish which you can pretty much skull-drag back to yourself ;)
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 9 жыл бұрын
MrTatts64 Thanks for the great tips!!! Yes, we completely agree that it's best to not try to match the line thickness of braid to the recommend thickness of the reel because that would be way overpowered for most needs and would drastically decrease casting performance. So far, I've never encountered spooling issues from using light braid... but that may be due to my preference to always use the smallest reel possible because even the small spinning reels these days have very strong drag systems. For example, I've caught multiple 40+ inch redfish along with an 80b tarpon on a 3000 series Shimano, and I too often see people using 4000+ size reels to fish the flats (that's more $ and power than needed in my opinion). Thanks again for the super helpful comments on spooling reels. Fish On!

i have 3 spinning reels, all spooled with mono backing almost matching the breaking strenght of the braid, enough to leave at least 100 yds of braid, my smallest reel, a size 2500 gets a lot of wind knots, i try as much as i can to take the line twists out, but wind knots happen too often, my other two reels hardly ever wind knot, is it possible that the smaller reel is "over spooled"?
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 8 жыл бұрын
Over-spooling is a possibility... my guess is either too much line or lost of line twists. If twists, then be sure to get them out (here's a post showing how: www.saltstrong.com/articles/fishing-line-twist-eliminator/

I insert my metal spooled type rod holder thorough the spool of new line, place it on the floor, add tension with one foot on each side, and reel in. You can easily control the tension my applying or releasing the pressure of your feet

Great video! After watching you have sold me on how easy it would be to change out my mono to microfilament braided. I was unable to locate the how to video on your website on the "you can tan?" knot. Would I be able to use the FG knot, to tie the lines together? Or would you suggest something else? Not sure if it matters, but usually I am fishing for trout, bass, catfish, walleye and bullhead.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 9 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas, thanks for leaving a comment. Yes, I highly recommend using the FG knot for the line to line connection since it's so strong while also being the thinnest of all line to line knots I've ever seen (so it won't cause any issues in your spool and can go in/out smoothly if a fish gets you down that far). Had I known the FG knot when making this spooling video, I never would have mentioned the "Yucatan knot".

Sounds good thank you! My brother and I have actually already spooled our braided line using the FG knot and your techniques, worked like a charm and casts ever so smooth, never realized the advantage of braided, as mono always seemed to slip off and tangle. Keep up the awesome videos and as you say FISH ON! :)
