www.judyrees.co.uk How can you recognise a metaphor? If you want to influence someone, or to use the full power of Clean Language to help them to change, it's important to pick up on the metaphors they use spontaneously. And research has shown that we use up to six metaphors a minute in ordinary conversation! Judy Rees explains how to spot metaphors "in the wild".

THANK YOU!, I can finally understand what a metaphor actually is! I'll be watching your videos from now on, the way you explain is so easy to follow.

Hi Judy, yes language is rich in metaphor and that's how we get our point across most of the time, it would actually be very difficult to speak without using metaphors :-) Now that would be an exercise in itself :-) Bye bye The English Sisters It's Lovely watching your videos always inspiring and informative Judy :-)

Does a metaphor include nationalizations?
@XraylisteningJR

I think it depends what you mean by 'nationalizations'. To me, 'nationalization' means the process of bringing an entity - a company, or 'the commanding heights of the economy' into public ownership. Philosophically, I think it would be possible to argue that ownership was metaphorical (it's not as if the public are carrying the commanding heights around in their pockets) but for practical purposes, it's probably best to treat it as literal. And, I wonder if you mean something different by the word 'nationalizations'?

It occurs to me that she is an angel - who has lost the ability to land, to be grounded, who will only fly around - who cannot come down to earth.

As and like are similies. All similies are metaphors but not all metaphors are similes.
