How to spray paint a guitar with nitrocellulose lacquer

In this video I show you how I dye a guitar using a combination of water based and spirit based dyes from Crimson and Angelus. I also show you how I spray a cherry shader and how I spray a burst with Nitorlack nitrocellulose lacquer

Great video, stunning guitar, thanks for sharing the process with us. (I loved it at the 15 min mark too). Why is it so important for the 'material' as you put it, to be so thin before being sprayed on?

We don't want build from the colour coat if spraying a transparent burst it will look weird with added risk of sanding through the colour. We want to build the clear on top of the burst. Thanks for watching. Ash

Man I love your work ! May I ask a few questions ? First is , how do you call the yellow tape you have on the bindings for a bleed barrier ? Second question is ,... I saw you on another video applying some sealer with a brush on the bindings to protect them against dye , what was that sealer ? Thanks

The orange tape is just masking tape, the blue tape is 3m vinyl tape, yes I've used sanding sealer on the sides some times, the same stuff I normally use out of a rattle can also comes in a tin and can be thinned and brushed on. Thanks for watching Ash

Another beauty, wow. What kind of mahogany are you using?? Looks very tan. I've used honduran and african, and even bare they have a slight brown-red hue to them. I also didn't know you could tint cell lacquer with alcohol...

I mostly use khaya (the lighter coloured khaya) or Honduras mahogany. I don't like the darker variety of khaya or sapele, way too heavy.

I'm interested to know when you would use a water based stain vs a spirit based stain. What is the difference in use case?

Generally speaking I perfect spirit based dyes, I find they apply more evenly and don't tend to look as patchy as waterbased can. But really i just work with whatever colours I have, all brands look different.

How do you avoid a finish from fading? I would expect a higher finish on PRS for example. Is it unavoidable, or is there a technique to it?

All colours will fade eventually with UV exposure. PRS guitars are no exception

sorry you did good until you did things backwards with the grain filler which is to be put on the bare wood not on finished wood

I didn’t put it in finished wood, I put it on primed wood, which is how PRS do it in the Maryland factory.

yeah you don't want to apply sanding sealer on to maple before dying it. I do sometimes apply sealer to the sides though, that can help dye bleeding through underneath into the natural binding.
