In this video I test a couple of Australian made rattle cans then spray, sand, and buff the body. I use 1500 grit and 2000g wet and dry sandpaper. Then Meguiar's polishing compounds. The paint is Dulux Duramax, and the clear lacquer is Concept Paints Super Gloss 2K. I also did a crosshatch adhesion test with the fishpond color on the original orange 2-pack finish.

Really well done and informative. I appreciate the attention to detail while also managing expectations which, I think, is important in any DIY project. Having a working knowledge of how "the pros do it" goes a long way in determining what and where compromises have to be made and if they can be lived with. The neck pocket portion of this series is what drew me here.

Thanks mate. When you are learning you have to avoid beating yourself up too much over little things. The goal is to have a great looking guitar to go jam on with your mates. In use it will get scuffed and scratched. It's not for a museum wall. I used to have a spray rig back when I was making guitars 15-20 years ago, but these days this stuff is just a hobby.

Hey Rob, great vid . My Sunburst Strat had major neck pocket cracks and I removed most of black paint from inside the horns (no cracks in the timber). I used several coats of dulux duramax gloss black (about 15 minutes between coats) and then several coats of their gloss clear coat (about an hour between coats) over the whole thing and then wet sanded down to 3000 about 5 days later. I then polished except I used Menzerna Fast gloss FG400 (great stuff and cheaper) and just did a final polish with some cheapo Bunnos car polish. Can't believe the results, seems to match the paint on my 18 year old Fender Strat perfectly, cant even tell its been done! I'm now doing an Artist guitars kit strat and I used the Rustoleum 2x paint, I"m no expert but it seems far inferior to the Dulux product to me. It takes way longer to dry, still tacky after days, seems to be still off gassing after a week, and doesn't fill imperfections nowhere near as well as the Dulux Duramax. Actually after about a week I sanded a lot of it off and have now put about 4 coats of the Dulux duramax Go Go blue over it and will clear coat in another week 👍 Thanks for the tips in this vid, very helpful 👍

Thanks mate. Yep, the duramax is a real gem of a product. The matt and semi gloss clear is great too, and pretty durable. It flows out very well. I reckon you could put a clear coat like dura max over the 2X, but you'd have to let it fully cure. I'd let it go at least a few weeks. Longer if you are down in tassie or some place colder. Best of luck with the kit build!

I bought a body and neck of a Vintage (brandname) V4 jazz 2007 Sunburst finish. It'd been hacked with a router to make room for pbass pups so in need of wood repair, which after watching your shows Rob I feel confident in doing now, thanks. As I was tyding bits up I noticed a bit of peeling lacquer, so my adhd kicked off and i started peeling, it all came off. Total crap! So now its all natural but with a under varnish type coating. Just show how an instrument that cost about 300 quid in 2007 has a poor finish, wonder if others peel like an orange too. Going to follow your methods, spray it a nice vintage looking cream and see how it looks. Making the pickguard too from a A4 sheet of black acrylic as its missing. That was interesting working out the dimentions from old adverts. Anyways Rob, great show as usual. Keep it up mate. Looking forward to a new one 👍

I bought those 2 Meguiar's compounds based on your advice. Will put them to the test in a week or two when the 2k poly clear (hopefully) is dry enough. Thanks again!

Ha ha thanks mate. There'll be one, maybe two more videos for Project Berocca. In the next video, I'm going to shave the neck asymmetrically then hit it with Danish Oil.

@@seanedwards773 Well I've only ever done one or two other necks as asymmetrical. But I briefly worked for Mike Tobias when I was travelling in the US years ago. His necks are all done this way and feel really nice to play on. This neck is a little chunky so I think it will be a nice way to finish off the project.

Hey Rob, have an americam strat that for whatever reason the next finish has cracks on the back only. Anyway to fix or improve? or is it refinishing only? Amercians say its weather checking.

@@sagemaster9754 It is made by Concept Paints. I don't believe it is also made in satin, however, the Dulux Duramax semi-gloss clear is one of my favourite rattle can products. I've used it on many projects.... Rob.

What would you say is the best out of all the brands of aerosol that you have used? I have an ibanez RG550 that I want to refinish in fluoro yellow. Also, is that Concept Paints Super Gloss any good? It's not a true 2K

Hi Rob, would there be a different process if spraying over stained wood? Or would it be just a matter of doing a test section first to see how the paint reacts with the stain? thanks
@RobMods
@RobMods 2 жыл бұрын
Well, it would depend on the nature of the stain. If it is an oily or waxy stain (like the old warwick thumb basses), then I'd repeatedly wash/wipe the timber with solvents to remove as much wax and oil from the surface. I doubt the stain would migrate through the enamel rattle can paint. However I'd be tempted to use a primer/sealer first anyway. And yes, if possible test your coating system beforehand.
