Before primer I would just sand it with 600 max, then lay down the primer and sand the primer with 800 max. The higher you go on the grit the less adhesion there will be, especially if you use a cheap primer where the chemical adhesion is probably not as good as with an expensive one.

I'd wait at least 3 or 4 days before wet sanding clear coat... You need to let the paint harden really for a good while.. clear can still be soft for weeks after it doesn't fully harden as quick as you think
@lerk20092 жыл бұрын
1500 grit is too fine for sealing the primer - use 1000 grit (or 1200 at the ABSOLUTE finest) or the base colour may flake/peel off!! Some people won’t go any finer than 800 for wet sanding primer 😅 If OP is reading this, did you have any problems with flake/peeling months later? Cheers 🍻

I think you did a wonderful job. It’s looking great! I would only add an exhaust fan to this video and two 1K lights. The lights let you see what you’re doing better and they make the paint stick to the bumper better. And they dry it better. The exhaust fan is for the over spray and your health. Turn the fan at the right speed so it doesn’t pull too fast or too slow. The fan will be messed up with paint rather than your lungs. You did a fantastic job and you worked extremely hard. The outcome was fabulous!

So you forgot a very important item. It is not wise to straight up prime the bumper and paint the bumper by itself. The primer and paint are not flexible by themselves. Especially when temps change and the bumper bends. The paint will crack. It is critical that you use adhesive promoter that will help the paint and primer stick to flexible body parts. It will only be a matter of time when you paint starts to fall off because you did not use this. In addition you should sand the bumper with 320-400 before laying down primer. Primer has very big droplets. And the sand paper you use does not give enough teeth for the primer to grab. When painting the bumper you should use 600-800. That will give the pain enough teeth to grab and still give it a smooth finish. The paper you use does not give the paint enough teeth and will start to flake off.

All of the DIY videos all of two things in common. They prime the entire panel they paint and they wetsand everything. There is no need to prime that entire bumper cover. The old paint is a good substrate to paint over in the condition it was in. Wetsanding is overly messy and only really useful for clear correction. One more thing, use a plastic adhesion promoter on the bare plastic parts and yet your best to use 2K products if you want it to last.
@wwandyyww6 жыл бұрын

@rileymarsh5056 жыл бұрын
Elias Bargee if you have a new bumper, you need a little more prep. I'd start off using a scotch bright pad specifically used for body work equivalent to 800 grit to remove all the mold release, wash and wetland with 400 grit. Don't use solvent based cleaner in plastics because on some occasions, the plastic can absorb it. Find a water based grease and was remover, adhesion promoter or plastic specific primer, primer, sealer if you want to make it perfect or an epoxy primer, base, 2k clear. Stay away from lacquer, it sucks.

Can I used this same white primer? My car it's a silver metallic color brighter than your Z, I'm looking for a primer to start the process of painting my front bumper but there's a lot of color choices of primers out there and I don't know wich primer color should I buy

You still need to prepare the bumper for paint by sanding it down

Did you use 3 coats of clear? And what grit did you use for wet sand? Did I miss that.
