Been browsing a few videos to get an idea for different methods etc, first one I've seen on a CB400SF! Mine is a fair bit older though, a 1994 model! It was resprayed from white to blue back in the early 2000s and is properly tatty now, gonna have a bash at respraying the tank and hopefully getting the tail fairing etc to match. One difference I've noticed with your video is everyone else suggests 400-600 grit, I might start coarser to get the bulk of the work done and move up to 400-600 once I'm getting towards bare metal. Cheers!
@32Builds4 жыл бұрын
Good idea, I'm pretty patient with my sanding but if there's a lot to cut back on make sure you sand off the previous sanding marks. I think I started with 140 or 190 grit on my engine bay filler.

Hey man. Became a fan of your page. I own a Datsun B110 and an Intruder VS 800 which i want to customize and this videos has been a huge help. I didnt get it if you took the tank to the metal and then aplied primer, or if just aplied primer on the metal parts and sand the rest.
@32Builds4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching my vids! 😊😊 I sanded down the original paint just to give the new paint something to bite onto - not down to the bare metal. I etch primered the bits of the tank where I ended up exposing bare metal.

Have you done another gas tank I have a Kawasaki 900 gas tank has a dent to it bigger than a coaster want to paint it black like my trick . First time doing this a little am a newbie motorcycle 🏍 rider How Much would you say it will cost me more or less than if I take it to a shop to fix my gas tank
@32Builds4 жыл бұрын
I would personally try pop it out a bit from the inside with a soft rod. If there are any tears in the metal it would have to be welded back again. The thicker the filler, the easier it is to crack off. It might be cheaper to source a new tank, but if you can achieve a decent finish it might be worth tackling yourself too :) Good luck!
@freazermendoza31543 жыл бұрын
Ahm.. did you use paint remover at first ? Or its ok to use dust paper ?

Hi mate, I am from NSW, looking forward to painting my bike's gas tank and plastic fairings soon. It would be very helpful if you can tell me what sort of primer and paint (acrylic, enamel or what) should I go for > as I got plastics and metal both. Thanks
@32Builds3 жыл бұрын
I recommend going to an Auto paints store rather than bunnings. Might have to do some trial and error as some paints don't play nice with eachother even if they are the same type. I went to Autolac in Artarmon and they set me up and mixed up the paints into aerosols too.

200 dollars is still quite a bit, I have a shop here near by that spray paint and repair cars. so without having dents to deal with and wanting to change from white to grey what grit would you sand down to and what type of primer also how many layers of primer and would you sand back down between layers? Thanks
@32Builds4 жыл бұрын
I'd say around the 180 to 220 grit area, just smooth enough that the primer hides any of the sanding marks - which I recommend using. Primer will stick better to the existing paint better than base coat, only use etch if you go down to the metal, otherwise epoxy or any auto filler primer will do good and also allow you really get the surface smooth. I don't sand between base coats, but I sand after the primer :)

Do you recommend matte black then a good clear coat..or gloss black straight out of the can?
@32Builds4 жыл бұрын
I'm actually not sure. I think it depends on the amount of effort you're willing to put in as well as the quality of finish you're after. You'll definitely get a deeper shine using a matte base and clear - especially if you slowly cake on the clear, giving you plenty of material to cut and polish. I only prefer gloss paint straight out of the can if its a 2-pack paint which is a super quick and easy solution. Otherwise its usually a spray can advertised for quick DIY applications.
@byebyetye4 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, thanks for the video. If I am doing a few different colours in layers, and then sanding it back to reveal different colours. Do I wait until they are fully dry before changing colours? And how many cans did you go through for that? Not including the primer and clear coat. Cheers mate.
@32Builds4 жыл бұрын
Not sure the exact process you're going through but I'd recommend fully dry to sand it down but its good to spray another layer of paint while the previous layer is still tacky. I used one can for the base coat, but I usually use double for the clear.
@adiyansaud66514 жыл бұрын
Can we paint directly on the gloss?

Thanks! Not sure which you should mask out and paint first, but I'd imagine you'd have to wait till it's dry or else the tape would pull any new paint off. Plus you'd need good tape that doesn't bleed and leaves clean lines - but yeah both colours and then clear. You could also get vinyls/decals cut for them too, the spray the clear over that.
