1:50 Oh, that explains why here in Finland it's actually illegal to route rain water to normal sewers. We have fully separate piping for rain water and I would guess that it's allowed to overflow to lakes in case it rains too much. Of course, having two sets of pipes is more expensive solution but it nicely avoids this whole problem. Still doesn't help with people that don't wash their hands.

I remember seeing a story about this more than 10 years ago. You aren't just what you eat, you are what your community eats. As disturbing as it may be, every inch of every public place you visit is covered in traces of fecal matter. That's life. I also saw another story recently. An average person has more than 170,000 different viruses in them, only half of them have been identified and named. Again, that's life. Merry Christmas everyone.

It doesn't have to be faecal matter, but bacteria and viruses sure. However, there are plenty of other bacteria and viruses from other transmission routes as well. Microbes live in our epithelium and inside our lungs and intestinal tracts, and many are commensal (they help maintain our body systems and are even necessary for our health) but some are pathogenic. They can be passed from skin contact, breathing and coughing, bodily fluids and sex. But microbes from our environment also live on surfaces and in living organisms. In other words: microorganisms exist everywhere. Public spaces just have more traffic from the microorganisms people bring with them, wether inside their bodies or picked up from other environments and animals. Yet humans have survived for millions of years with our microbial environment, and we have an immune system to deal with it - we interact with these microbes all the time without problem, unless you are already sick. Other than washing your hands before you eat, being in public spaces is only a concern when an outbreak of some kind of infectious disease is in the area. Just stay up to date with your vaccinations.

That's not the message of this video. In fact, it says the opposite - washing your hands puts the virus into the sewer, which then gets dumped into the sea untreated for others to catch it. Washing your hands does NOT protect you here.
@10_Bit
@10_Bit 4 жыл бұрын
@@M0rtanius but it's also not an excuse not to, it will spread eventually by other means. If you wash your hands then it will spread around by sewage and if you don't it goes in two ways; by social contact and sewage, which will spread faster than just sewage and plus you'll just end up spreading other bacteria that you have picked up while wiping your ass. Unless you're a dirty bastard and don't wipe yourself after a shit session.
@asdfghyter
@asdfghyter 4 жыл бұрын
@@M0rtanius You already put a ton of viruses in the sewer system when you poo, washing your hands don't make any difference. It's quite amazing that a virus can get diluted in that colossal volume of water, go through that many changes in environment (including the gut of a non-host organism!), and still retain an infectious critical mass. The general wisdom on viruses is that they have a very steep half-life outside hosts, cannot be diluted in any way, and most transmission can only travel a short and brief burst outside hosts.

Last year (2020) the city of Seattle released 1.145 Billion(!) gallons of untreated wastewater into the Lakes Rivers and Ocean adjacent. The whole south sound is unfishable because of it.. it's sick! I've worked in the sewage treatment field all my adult life, and 40 years ago we used to welcome a rain fall in it's ability to flush out the sewers and "get rid of" the waste that was starting to decompose in the sewers. During dry periods we even used the fire department to flush out particularly stinky sewers. This was in the age of combined sewage systems, where excess rainfall was diverted to the sanitary sewers, and overflows were intentionally diverted to the natural environment without treatment. In our ignorance and innocence...we contributed to the pollution and sickness that it was our solemn job to eradicate. We even had a saying, " The solution to pollution is dilution". My God, what have we done?

Worked in the restaurant industry when I was younger, and where I lived and worked, Utah had a "Food Handlers PERMIT" and one of the training classes you had to go through taught that all foods as specially meats of any kind had to be cooked to a certain temperature and they had to be stored at certain temperatures depending on the time period for which they where going to be stored. I came to the understanding that if this is how it must be done to serve food safely to the public then it was going to be the standard for me in my personal life. As I said I have had diarrhea maybe once or twice in my entire adult life. An I am 47 years young and can still run multiple circles around people half my age. I never get sick. I do not drink any kind of alcohol, nor do I cook with it. I do not smoke anything. An I have absolutely nothing in my medicine cabinet except for my thyroid pill and bandaids, and super glue. I weigh 155 lbs, I eat pretty much anything I want. I am very active, sitting around doing nothing is what makes the body grow old. I have never had any back pain or aching joints. And I worked as a roofer, a carpenter, a plumber, an electrician, lot's of heavy lifting. I bicycle, and kayak, and walk a lot.

This is why I like where I live. The storm sewer and the sanitary sewer are totally separate systems. And all treated sewage has to travel about 30 miles before it reaches any body of water so a lot gets soaked into the surrounding landscape and the rest gets exposed to plenty of sunlight and the UV rays it emits.
@Skrillfreak
@Skrillfreak 2 жыл бұрын
But other thing that really helps with this and they've been installing these in my area are CSO tanks, which hold large volumes of water in emergency events such as rain storms to prevent the sewage from outflowing, only processed after the rains have stopped.

Fifty years ago there was no industry in the river system around the city where I live and it was dangerous to even wade the waters in our city's waterfront park. After efforts in waste treatment we were able to have a thriving shellfish industry in the three rivers but the mussel farmers had to shut down for weeks after every storm. A decade ago a multi-government project separated our sewage system from our drainage system at a cost of 18 million dollars to keep our waterfront safe for shellfish, swimming and the other various water activities. I recall our city's waterfront park being enjoyed by dozens of people every week back then. Now I see thousands enjoying the park and waterfront daily.

Yeah, there's really not much you can do. Someone pointed out a study had found most of the touchscreens at fast food places have fecal matter on them. But, that's not news. that's true for pretty much everything people touch. Door handles are notorious, as is money. Then again, money is also known for having cocaine on it, which you probably have on your hands now in trace amounts too... To say nothing of what lives on your skin anyway, and which no amount of cleaning will get rid of, because it takes all of a few seconds to recolonise. Washing your hands, at best, means that the contamination from item A doesn't get onto Item B... Which can be important, but don't think that you'll ever truly be 'clean' in the sense of not contaminated by anything at all, or ever being without a hefty coating of bacteria and viruses on every inch of your body...

@Chris D'oulmeth It's actually mainly Yulin, China. Not the whole of China's population. Those who do are a small percentage thankfully, and usually its a festival thing, so it's not year long dog eating as some people may assume. So to say "the chinese" is a generalizing 96% of Chinese people that don't eat dog meat, not accounting for the people in Yulin's population that don't eat dogs. www.hsi.org/news-media/yulin-dog-meat-survey-061217/ As for whether lobsters feel pain, theres definitely a significant possibility that they do given the nervous system they have, tough we can't say for sure just yet. I would say it's worth stunning them first or killing them really quick rather than straight into the pot. Just in case. Feels more humane.

The video was very good (as usual) but i think that "enjoy the video" is not the right way to describe what i felt.
