THANK YOU for covering the how to of leveling in the EXACT right detail. As a DIY wanna be, leveling was part that made me not want to try Pavers. In ANY deck install video you see how precise the leveling is, but hardly ANY DETAILS about how they physically place the levels. You showed EXACLTY how to lay the poles, HOW TO USE THE LEVELER, and showed ON CAMERA watching the leveler bubble. I felt the actual level of that patio with you in the level tools with each bubble measurement. YOU made leveling A LOT more clear to me as a dummy DIY. More LEVEL vids please and thank you!

Posting videos like these are so helpful bc I have family that lives in dilapidated houses. Its so hard for certain people in certain income brackets to save enough to hire a professional. Most professionals ere on the side of gatekeeping industry secrets. And I get that. However, some people really only can afford to DIY. In the even that we win some sort of overnight lottery, we'd hire a team like yours in a heartbeat. God bless.

I totally understand, that has been a big goal of my channel. To teach people who want to do their own projects but just don't have the info or experience. I have got so many comments and emails from DIY'ers thanking me for the videos because they built their own patios, walkways, walls, etc... purely from watching them. That makes me feel good and keeps me motivated! God Bless you too ✌

We set our string line with a transit. Afterwords we set our pipes with the transit (roughly) the use that string line to measure of from to get them exact. Level to double check that it’s spot on. Love that you’re building on washed crush stone. New England is especially important to build a strong base that doesn’t retain water. We still do some on gravel and sand, but only in certain small applications.

The open grade is very intriguing to me and makes a lot of sense but I've been laying stone for over 15 years with just crusher dust in Ontario and have never had issues. The patio me and my father laid when I was 16 at our house(almost 25 years ago) was still in great shape (no sink holes or heaving) when we sold the house last year, the only thing we did over the years was resand it a couple times.

I love the open grade base method. I used to use dense grade or (crusher run) with sand as my bedding material for about 6 years until 5 years ago when I switched to open grade base. I will never go back... I agree that you can do a great. long lasting install with the traditional method but there is no room for error. Especially in cold winter climates... The clean stone allows for such better drainage and keeps the pavers dry at all times, which is key for a long lasting install. ✌

awesome video! love that you don't use a sand base.... the chip stone looks much more stable and easier to work with. I'm looking to have an excavator cut out a patio in our hill and install a 4' high boulder wall. I'll have about 14' x 30' patio area and this looks like a doable project for me... mostly by myself but I'm retired and not under time pressure. I'll probably make it high in the middle and drain to both sides, and then have a french drain carry away water. the land is mostly clay so it doesn't drain well. I appreciated the info about the chip stone with no fines allows water to drain through.

Hey brother! Thanks for the honest feedback, I really appreciate that. This work is my passion and I have been watching KZbin for a very long time. Not very many good Hardscaping channels on here, so I really wanted to start one and share the work I do, but also teach others as much as I can. So I try to make my videos detailed by taking people through all the steps of the installs. My earlier long form videos are not the greatest, it has taken a lot of practice and learning with the video editing to get the videos a bit better... I'm still learning a lot with every video I make. Just like I keep learning on every job I do in Hardscaping... It's all about growth in life! Congratulations on your company, keep up the hard work and stay motivated. You will do great! God bless and thanks again for the feedback! ✌

Thank you man I learned good stuff, on my backyard patio I used 4in crushed rocks and 1in sand. I believe instead of sand if I had used smaller grade crushed rock would have been better. Also I leveled all the area before laying the pavers, working in segments would have been better. And most importantly longer levelling pipes would have been a worthwhile investment. Good work.

Your base prep method makes so much more sense as compared to the standard use of sand. I think the best industrial example would be the use of a very similar angular stone or gravel when bedding railroad tracks. That stone allows for the tracks to drain, doesn’t appear to compress, warp or heave over time. Keep the videos coming. You guys are very likable👍
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper Жыл бұрын
Yes sir! The railroad tracks is prime example of this method. People comment about how this stone won’t hold up, and like you said, it holds up trains driving over it no problem. And the water draining right through it is the most important part, especially in freeze / thaw cycles.. thanks for the feedback and I’m glad you see the benefit of this method! ✌🏻

I bought a bad ass electric brick saw with a rimless blade for $100 dollars. It's far better than a cut off saw. The cut is way cleaner and it sprays water... We have had gas table saws before, but they don't touch the electric one. If you find one, snag it ASAP. It was a complete game changer for our business. We will never use a gas table saw again, but we still use our STIHL cut off a lot. The rimless blade is really where it's at. I'm pretty sure you can buy one for the Stihl saw.

Amazing work and same to be said of the video. With the 3 sizes of pavers applied in a random pattern it looks like it would be difficult to get the opposite (from the starting point) finished edges to come out even flush to the straight line in a fixed rectangular area. How would I do that with no cutting? I have equal sq ft area for each size (4x8, 8x8, 12x8)?

I've watched so many videos on patios, i want to do my own... but my brain just can't compute the whole leveling part, etc. As well as how he mentions good starting blocks so as to have limited cuts on the sides but it's a random patio so i don't get how they know it's going to be even with limited cuts once they get towards the end.

Excellent video. Here in UK very difficult to find a contractor interested in smaller gardens like mine hence I’m here to learn to do it myself. The paving supplier has recommended a cement mortar base under the 7/8” thick slate paving which should be 1” depth when tamped down. Interesting on this video just lay on stones which seems much easier but your blocks are much thicker. I still think I should rule off on the gas pipes to start with a perfectly prepared surface. Any videos with advice on laying a border when the border is not enclosed by a wall?
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper Жыл бұрын
Glad the video was helpful! With thinner stone like that, most people do set them in a mortar bed. This helps strengthen the slab and give it a longer life. I would definitely recommend using this base method and screeding just like I did. Then you can lay mortar and the slabs. Here is a video link of how I install border 👉kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWm7hqBqn5KVeJo

Your channel and videos inspired me to hardscape a patio in my backyard. I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada and I have a hard time finding 3/8 clear stone for the sreeding. I'll be laying Permacon 60mm Melville slab. I was wondering what are my options for open grade? Can I use 1 1/4" clear for the base and 3/4" minus clear for the screeding material.
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 9 ай бұрын
That's awesome! I know it can be tough to find the smaller clean stone in some areas... I would recommend using the 3/4 for base and use a (pea stone) for the screeding material. It is basically 5/8" clean stone. If you can't find that, lay fabric over the base stone and use a nice clean sand on top of it for the screeding material.

Thank you for the vid! i like how you go over more of the screeding and grade process, your work is perfection! Was the french drain dug in right up against between the edge of the patio and the house? I am going to build a patio of my own and want to run the gutters into a drainage system.
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 11 ай бұрын
My pleasure, glad you liked it! The french drain is there and it runs down the entire house and diverts it to the side yard. You can certainly bury some pipe in the backfill for your gutter drainage. That is a huge benefit of the clean stone for the base. ✌

Very niceeeee Thanks for your detailed videos It helps so much. I also will be placing the chip stone this week first time laying pavers down. I was confused whether to use use sandstone or chip stone but you clarified that especially living on east coast in Gloucester Thanks for all the tips Appreciate it.
