Hey so question I got my timing belt on and tensioned how to I put the metal plate back on that has the three bolts
@johnnyguerrero37234 жыл бұрын
Awesome video man👏🏼 I hope I can take this down tomorrow haha also can you elaborate on the last step @ 10:33 thanks!
@ThomasMiata4 жыл бұрын
That is setting the idler spring tension. You lock it in so the spring tab rests in the grove.
@manuelguerrero20204 жыл бұрын
I took my timing belt before adjusting it to the marks is that a problem?
@ThomasMiata4 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge the 2.4L, are non interference engines, so when the valves are open and the piston was at Top Dead Center the valves and piston would not come into contact. You should be fine 👍
@manuelguerrero20204 жыл бұрын
Sweet! So that being said I can turn the gears counter clockwise? Or should I just turn them clockwise until my Marks match up?
@ThomasMiata4 жыл бұрын
@@manuelguerrero2020 it’s supposed to be better to only go clockwise.. but I doubt it would actually matter since it’s non interference.

Sounds good thanks!

I ran into an issue so once my timing belt was off my cam gears moved and I honestly don’t know what to do. I’m not sure if I messed my engine up, what would you recommend me to do?
@johnnyguerrero47244 жыл бұрын
When jacking up the engine do I need to worry about the transmission mount? Will the frame mess up
@ThomasMiata4 жыл бұрын
I left it alone and jacked the motor up enough to get access. I bet you could take it off if your worried about it, but I didn’t need to.
@johnnyguerrero47244 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasMiata I probably won’t worry about it then because I searched in the forums too and I didn’t see anyone mention the tranny so I think you’re right haha!

Hey man got a question for you, do you have to remove the pulley to get the bracket off, that’s all I need to do and I was curious if I could do it without removing the pulley
@ThomasMiata6 жыл бұрын
Isaiah Tiller I took the pulley off to get the timing cover off. I can't remember if it was for the bracket as well.. sorry, it's been a while

How do u get your marks to line up? Do u just keep turning the harmonic balancer until your marks line up?
@ThomasMiata5 жыл бұрын
Try using two wrenches on the cam bolts with a pair of vice grips to keep them locked together. That might help... But i think I did this by just lining them up and being very careful not to go to far on either cam.
@JosePerez-ld8de4 жыл бұрын
Why didn’t you record installing the belt or did I miss the part? It’s tricky and I think future viewers would love it.
@ThomasMiata4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, wasn't as good at filming back then. Hint: this is the same engine (without a turbo) that dodge installed in some other vehicles like mini vans. There are pretty good videos of those out there ;)

I'm so glad you made this video....I have documentation on how to do this, but this video makes it even better...Kudos. What mileage did you guys change the belt out if you can remember, I have a 2004. Also is there anything you can buy to lock the CAMs? And how did you go about lining them back up before putting the new belt on?
@ThomasMiata7 жыл бұрын
Murph around 150k miles. And you don't need to lock the cams, they will kinda hold themselves.
@Armurp017 жыл бұрын
Thomas Miata so before putting the new belt on did you line them back up?
@ThomasMiata7 жыл бұрын
Murph yes, line up your marks. Then slide belt on
@Armurp017 жыл бұрын
Ok so moving each cam manually with a wrench or hand won't hurt....as long as it's clockwise? Sorry for all the questions....but will be my first time as well.
@ThomasMiata7 жыл бұрын
Murph non interference motor.. can turn by hand and don't need a jig

You can replace the timing belt without removing the motor?
@ThomasMiata6 жыл бұрын
Yep
@dennisarnett95254 жыл бұрын
Chrysler calls this 1/2 tooth timing. The exh Mark overlapping the intake mark. These are semi interference engines. Id be careful letting that cam snap like that I also wouldnt get in the habit of rolling an engine backwards. Alot of tensioners will loose there tenion and allow the cams to roll out of place allowing the valves to contact the pistons.
@ThomasMiata4 жыл бұрын
I have to be honest. I had not idea what I was doing on this job ;) Thankfully it was a friends car which ran perfect after this job until it was in a front end collision :( Thank you for the input, and I will do my best not to spin engines backwards from here on out. :)

Can you use a tool to hold the cam gears in place so the cam doesn't jump when you remove the belt?
@ThomasMiata7 жыл бұрын
njshift I'm sure you could, but I did not.. when you set them they kinda want to stay put unless you twist to much... if you have the tool, use it, but don't spend money on it if u don't

I have an existing tool which is why I asked. Thanks for the quick reply.

did you just go counter clockwise? isnt that bad.
@ThomasMiata6 жыл бұрын
I don't believe going backwards is an issue.. technically it might be, but this engine is still alive and kicking just fine. It's a non interference engine.. so no matter what you do, the valves wont hit the pistons.
