Notice the lack of glue that makes it to the bottom of the crack by pounding. Hint apply glue to both surfaces.

My uncle built his barn by hand, meaning hand tools only, including felling the trees and cutting the lumber by hand. Not only did he make the importance’s of gluing both the hole and the dowel clear, he also showed me to use only enough glue to coat the surfaces but also to give it a minute to tack before inserting the dowel(s)

That did not need stabilizing, nor did those dowels do any stabilizing. If you want to show off, drop a bowtie in it. If you want to look like a tough guy, hammer up a couple dogsand slam them across the crack. The only cracks that need stabilizing are in slabs, not in centercut cants like this.

@@jamesowen21 I don't need to look them up. I know exactly what they all are because I have been a professional carpenter/joiner/site fixer for most of my working life. I have worked in joinery shops as a bench carpenter, in banks and the Albert hall site fixing and been self employed making and fitting doors and windows and fitting kitchens. Also roofing and shuttering in Germany (I speak a modest amount of German from my days stationed in Germany in the army) I trained as a land surveyor while in the army and when I left the army I did a 3 year contract out in Saudi Arabia land surveying, so don't front me about my knowledge of construction work or joinery etc. I've probably forgotten more than you'll ever know because I'm 76. Sonny.

@davidashton2361
@davidashton2361 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesowen21 I've never heard of a dado in connection with a groove. Must be an americanism. I have used the term dado rail in connection with a moulding that is fixed at about waist height in a room, usually above panelling, but not used as a verb to describe channeling out a groove in wood. However, I will concede that there are minor differences in american english and english english. To ask me to look up tongue and groove, really? My cats know what tongue and groove is. From this I deduced that you were a rank amateur of tender years, which prompted my outburst. However, now that you have revealed that you are also a retiree I apologise, but I still have reservations about your woodworking experience. Be that as it may, I find the american way of expressing gratitude to former service personnel very endearing, so thank you for that. I was in the army for 14 years and the biggest mistake was opting to leave. I was totally unsuited for life in a civilian enviroment. I should have stayed in and benefitted from more rank and longer service leading to a much better pension. My involvement in posting comments about other peoples woodworking skills is prompted by my desire to 'wind people up' out of amusement. Frankly, some of them really don't appear to have much experience and are only using this medium to make money out of even less able people. In the real world of carpentry and joinery they wouldn't have a hope in hell of earning a living. That's not to say they're wrong necessarily, but in the competitive world of, say, site fixing, to only hang one door a day doesn't cut the mustard. More like 5 to 10 is the norm, depending on site conditions. I know that in America a lot of the tedious work has been done, like the lock positions being already cut out etc. Where here in England we have to do that on site usually and therefore the rate of door fitting lowers. Even so, 5 to 10 doors is the norm.

@@gigakutaladze.5492 I was just making a joke lol. Judging by the bottle, it's Titebond II but literally any glue labeled "wood glue" will work just fine. Some are formulated for more specific tasks but they will all work out. I personally like Gorilla *Wood* Glue (not regular gorilla glue as it expands but specifically the wood glue) because it's cheaper in small quantities where I live and is readily available. In a pinch, any PVA glue will bond wood such as school glue but it's not really recommended.

@davidashton2361
@davidashton2361 Жыл бұрын
End grain doesn't match with horizontal grain. End grain is end grain and horizontal grain is, well, horizontal grain. The only way to disguise this is to make the dowel shorter and pellet over the end and then you can match the grain, provided you select a pellet with a matching grain or make your own from a similar grained piece of timber. I agree with somebodys comment about putting glue in the hole as well. Actually, I didn't see the point of dowelling the piece of timber in the first place - as somebody else said, just get a decent piece of timber to start with. Sorry to say it, but a lot of people slagged this exercise. Nice one, Bro!
@jonesy12221
@jonesy12221 Жыл бұрын
@@davidashton2361 I'm not slagging it or trolling. When I put a pellet or grain plug in even a dowel I'll match the grain of timber its going in to. Standard practice! This is clearly a vid to show how to secure a piece of timber thats already been installed & then started to split & shrink. Just prevents further parting.
