I discovered how to stack and elevate structures, in ARK Survival Ascended, using pillars and beams. In this building tutorial, I'll show you how to stack preserving bins on refrigerators, vaults on vaults and elevate and/or float structures, such as air conditioners, above the ground. This mechanic can be used to build crafting stations, breading areas and even vault walls by stacking and elevating structures.

Haha! Foundations are a nightmare! I’ve spent ages trying to figure more out about them. Making domino terrain g discoveries, but nothing quite that clever yet! I just use ceilings currently since they’re level now. Any good case uses for stacking them outside of levelling them on a flat surface?

@@toastbloke yeah, I suspected as much. More of a PVE aesthetic for building on uneven terrain. Pillars flush under ceilings now, so I think they have that covered off. Just curious if you discovered foundations snapping to anything useful or otherwise on your journey 🤔

Currently, fence foundations are being the most interesting! Not worked out a solid use for them yet though!

Using this method I was able to stack 20 air conditioners in a compact side by side (not front to back) config in the space of an closed single foundation (a pillar's height and width). I did this by stacking two tables high first to place the top row, then removed the tables and filled in the bottom blow beneath them. Takes such a small space yet there is a whole foundation space in the middle for eggs (not cramped). And none at the bottom (below the floor) so hopefully hatchlings can't fall through the floor. The ACs are slightly less efficient from the side vs front or back sides, but still over kill at ~3700 resists.

Really lovely to know this. Thank you. I’ve been using the quarter ceiling to place things on top but it’s just not as convenient most times like this could be. Haven’t tried it yet but I would like to imagine that you could line the top side of walls with beams to do this. And I would hopefully imagine that things don’t get wonky with the structures sticking to the beam. I usually try to avoid pillar spam of any kind even but this feels like it would encourage me to place some beams across the top side of my walls so I can I have easier to reach storage. I hope it isn’t treated as a bug and the devs up and fix it cuz this is the sort of building techniques I was hoping to see sort of retained in ASA alongside the quality of life improvements to the building. Something I had a thought to try with this technique while watching is to see if this could be taken advantage of to make some sort of plant x defense. Sure you can stack plots but for the Plant x you have to stack the plant x in such a way that they don’t block one another. I’d be curious if there is a optimal way to stack up some plant x without blocking each other.

That’s a really cool idea! Stacking the crop plots up the pillars at the right intervals so the plants fit would be sick! From what I can tell, things stick to pillars and beams regardless of where they are as long as nothing is obstructing them and they have support below them when placing 😎

yeah please test... only problem still is we do not have tek dedicated storage intake as with the S+ mod from ASE, so people will need to think of ways to actually get to the storages and be able to deposit resources/consolidate if they want to stack them up high... like catwalks behind them or something

Those are some great tricks. I've been trying to figure this for a while and wasnt that easy since i have it on tree platform with wall at the edge so i couldnt exactly put refrigerator under the pillar since there is a wall and i didnt wanted to stick in the other side. I've figured out that you can put Storage Box on the beam above refrigerator and then put preserving bin infront of storage box and it almost perfectly lines up on the front with great access. Thanks for this. Now i just need to figure out how to put industrial forge and tek replicator on tree platform with 2 walls high xD Probably just gonna leave it outside eventually.

That’s a cool idea with the storage box! I didn’t think of that! The alignment in the game is really helping keep things neat and tidy, which I love! I’m getting on to exploring crafting stations currently, so I have no idea about that. Hopefully, you figure it out! I haven’t even looked at an industrial forge yet, beyond checking for size! 😂

@@toastbloke Well figured something but there's got to be a better way to do it. With Industrial Forge i made a box with walls and ceilings below the tree platform. You can put 3x4 ceilings on each side of the tree platform to extend it. I went 4x2 walls under the platform at the edge and placed line of quarter walls bellow standard walls then 3x5 ceilings with forge on them and repeat walls and quarter walls all around and close it off. Forge sticks above tree platform just enough to light it and put metal in it from above. Doesnt look great but it works. Was thinking to put it 3 walls down and make stairs to it but im not carrying all that metal down. Its easier to put metal in vault and carry it around with Rhynio and then put it next to forge and relocate all the stuff.

Thanks. No problem! They have a spherical area of effect I believe, so raising them this high doesn't really 'cause any problems. The effect is reduced the same amount vertically as it would be horizontally. I hope I've explained that well enough! I placed these 2-3 times as high in the old game and still got eggs to incubate just fine and they seem to work the same.

I’m running a 4070. Everything else is just what I’ve used for the last few years. I did have to double my RAM from 16GB to 32GB to be able to play and record at the same time. Was getting maxed, but has been smooth ever since!

I don’t have asa yet, ps5 player, but with the crossing with pillars you can do on the outside of buildings. Can you do that inside with just the top two pillars like how you have it @4:31? To get rid of the pillar on the right? Maybe that’ll stack too high though.

You can snap pillars/beams to the corners of foundations too. I haven’t tried sticking things to pillars in the walls, but pillars do snap to walls, so I’d imagine it would work on both the inside and outside of the wall. You can put walls around, and probably in, after if there are no obstructions 🙌🏻

Maybe helpful: you shouldnt need the tek rifle for the pillars, you can just destroy them with the menu wheel and the structures only supported by them will break too. Maybe thats an option thing but at least in my SP game that works. Found out the hard way, wanted to pick up but destroyed the structure and everything that was only supported by it broke too. For better access on the placing snappoint at the pillar you can build a ramp or stand on something, so the hitbox of the elevating structure is not in the way that much. Worked quite well for me so far.

Yes, I used a weapon as the breaking was what I wanted to avoid to show the vaults. Pick up picks the attached vault up and demolish destroys the attacked vault! Nightmare! Breaking it lets the vault drop. Well, it did at the time of testing. They keep changing things! 😅 And great, if you can find ways of making things work better for you, of course, utilise them! The more we find the more we can all do!

I just made sure Nvidea DLSS was off because it kept causing crashing and run a mix of medium and high settings with frames capped at 60. I’m running a 4070 and had to upgrade my RAM to 32GB to be able to play and record/stream at the same time. The rest is close to minimum requirements. Hope that helps!

Idk if you will see this but you should do some experimenting with this and ceilings getting them to float after you destroy everything. I did it once while building and havent been able to recreate it but it was a full floating ceiling with nothing attached

I came across this freestanding, but from what I can see, if you stick things against the pillar/beam, you can build walls right behind inside them. For the preserving bins, the refrigerators work better being pushed under, so you get a small gap if you want them close to a wall, yes, but you can just move the fridges forward if you’d prefer them flush to a wall 😎

I looked into it and I can get the effect, but at the minute, due to not being able to stand on vaults, it looks good, but doesn't work great. When they fix vaults, I'll share! I mean, they may have already fixed them. I've not checked!

Unfortunately only some of these stacking methods worked for me on official. On Solo it works flawlessly but I can only assume some settings are different on official that caused me a headache to get some to work. The main culprit right now is getting preserving bins that wont work right for me no matter what I done.

Appreciate the information! I'm hoping to get on a server and test this further tomorrow. It worked with official settings in single player, and on a private server with them, but since the last patch, a few people have mentioned having trouble on actual official servers. I need to find out if it's a strictly official server issue, or if it now happens on private ones too. Hope they aren't working on patching it out already!

Not sure why but when I tried to use the preserving bin stacking on one pair on pillars it refused to work. Later on I did preserving bins stacked on preserving bins with pillars in another part of same base and it worked. @@toastbloke. Im not sure why it wouldn't work the first time I did it no matter what thou. Just wanted to leave that correction here as it happened after my first post. So clearly I did something different in the first attempt that prevented it from working. Oh and thanks for the video, been really helpful in getting the base area more squeezed together.

They do, yes. They work vertically the same way they do horizontally. The AOE is a sphere, so higher will have less effect just like further away does, but a few tiles up or across won't impact things too negatively.

Yup, everything is wireless now, which saves some time, but has a few downsides. They've said pipes and cables won't be a thing in the game going forwards. If you have a generator though, that powers things that require gas now too, which makes sense I guess. You can still power them using gas without one, but there's not much need now.

If I was a betting man, I'd have put money on stacking being added for all structures in ASA, at the very least foundations, even if it was limited to a max number of structures! What I don't get is why some things that couldn't stack can, and other things that could stack can't? Baffles me, but it's always good fun figuring out how to get around these things! 😅

Could you provide me a little more information please. Are you trying to build the AC across the beams, exactly like in the video? Does the first one stay in the air when you remove the tables? Have you turned snapping off to place the rest?

Ok so, stacking tables is possible, it's just really finicky and difficult to do, you cannot align the AC's to each other in front of the beam nor can you place them on the tables. But what you can do is place them on top of the beam.. but the 1st one will be sunk into the beam, you place the 2nd and it'll be slightly higher, 3rd higher still, eventually you'll get them sitting on the beam not inside it. You have to keep adding them then removing them until everything lines up. Whilst it isn't as bad as ASE building, it is still very frustrating in ASA. Then you can align them next to each other... and it looks ok. The Fridge/Ac thing doesn't work at all. I'm using Steam/Pc Version. I am trying to work around a Baby Barry and Argent at the moment so maybe they're in the way. 5 AC/s on top of the beams looks good tho.

I'll do my best to double check this asap. This is the first case I've heard of it not working and it worked when tested on servers. I'll let you know what I find when I do. They might have changed something. Sadly, the building seems to be the one thing they're quick to act on, but this seems real fast.

So I did everything but after the 3rd ac unit it says I can’t place because it’s obstructed. I’ve tried different spots but it always seems like the right side won’t place. Any advice or a fix for this?

@@minhhoang-ms5qy I've just jumped in and managed to recreate the build first time, although the alignment was being a little more janky than before. The only thing I can suggest to look out for it making sure the crosshair is on the beam and that snapping is turned off. I gets trickier to position the aircon and have the crosshair on the beam the closer they get to your feet while placing. Let me know how you get on and if that helps.

Yeah, one of the patches made it really fidgety on servers. Even unofficial. It's strange because it still works perfect in single-player. I'm hoping it's a server issue that gets fixed... but there's a lot of fixing that needs doing!

I can give it a try and let you know. It should be, as long as there is support below where you place it and a pillar behind to snap it to.

It is possible. Due to it's size you have to use two stacks of tables, or place the table length ways against the pillar to create a surface for it to snap too. Also, to make sure it snapped, I had to get around the table to be close enough to get the grinder right against the pillar. Hope this helps!

They did in ASE, yeah. They don't in ASA, unfortunately. There's been a lot of changes when it comes to structures. There's load of things you just can't do the same way anymore. It's a headache! 😅

It should be exactly the same when it comes out. It’s just a case of placing the structures, pushing the indicated button to toggle snapping and the walking back and looking up and down 💪🏻

As long as you build the tables out far enough and to the correct height to support them, it should work, even with an industrial forge, yes. Had the same problem with an industrial grinder. You also have to come around the side to make sure it's touch the pillar when you look at it.

It did not too long ago, but there's a chance it's been patched recently or there's something weird official server side. I'll have to check again to make sure as a few people have problems prior, but it turned out it was down to error. Thanks for letting me know, cheers. If I get it to work I'll update you. 🙌

It's working for me on Steam, although something has changed. Even though you get green-boxing it says 'obstructed' when you place, but that's only if your crosshair isn't high enough up the pillar and the object isn't against the pillar. It helps make it easier if you run things across a beam or build another pillar on the first one. Let me know how that goes.

I actually tried it with your method and it didn't work so then I had an idea of trying it with quarter walls and snapping pillars to that, that way they are lower to the ground and just the right height where you could do your method on them and possibly snap the tek trough on top but sadly it didn't work

They do indeed! It’s a cool new feature, just not one related to the mechanic I’m showing off here. This gives more options for all structures, but even has benefits with air cons, like placing anywhere, stacking and keeping them closer together 😎
