That came out really nice. What kind/brand of stain do you use, and is it always recommended to stain a handle before attaching the head, or can you stain a handle that’s already attached? Thanks.

Great result using the knife that way, certainly improves the look of the handle . Nice looking axe too. Regards from Down Under.

Is the video with the black linseed oil for the head already out? Nice look with the knive treatment!

I made a short about it! Might make a ling form video as well

Nice! Would like to know if that stain is water based or alcohol based...Don't want to do my multiple coats of raw flaxseed oil over a stain that's already sealed the wood!! I'm refinishing a nice little hatchet and want to make it really pretty...

how do you get your axe head that look

Did you sand the wood before staining? Can I do this with an axe I just bought without sanding it first?
@mrsorepaws91462 жыл бұрын
Beautiful result! Just out of curiosity: have you tried with very coarse sandpaper (using very little pressure) instead of knife? Just wondering what the result would be like...
2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Sometimes I do both, but you get more defined lines with the knife in my opinion

I'm currently in the process of installing a new Hickory handle on my Ax. I already applied 2 coats of linseed oil. Is it too late to stain the handle?
@FIGGY6511 ай бұрын
Yes. Just make sure to use an oil based stain.

Another great video man! Can’t wait to see the next one!! Is that standard wood glue you use for the wedge? Or is it epoxy?

Just regular woodglue nothing fancy

Where do you get your stain?
Жыл бұрын
I get it at the local color store in my home town. One Idea could be to try out a few to see which one you like etc.

Wouldn't it be better to use the linseed oil before you put the axe head on so the oil protects the wood underneath the axe head?
2 жыл бұрын
you could do that. but generally speaking the oil penetrates quite well. especially if its heated.
@jimmylarge11482 жыл бұрын
@ a lot of people soak the whole head or whole ax in linseed overnight insuring that the whole handle, even under the head is coated. Doing it your way nils would be totally fine you’re correct.

@@jimmylarge1148 That's right! We have some wonderful educational videos from a linseed oil company here in Sweden(unfortunately its in Swedish) that goes well into detail how the oil penetrates etc. The best oil for penetration is raw linseed oil. heated. they have run very cool tests to see how it affects the wood, and the result is incredible.
