How to Stain (and NOT to Stain) Your Fence with a Pump Sprayer | Ready Seal Wood Stain on Fence

This was my first time staining a fence with a pump sprayer and I made a couple key mistakes early that I go over in the video.
-For starters, make sure there is significant and consistent pressure from the sprayer. Stop and pump it as you start to feel the pressure subside.
-Make sure the nozzle is in the correct position, ideally parallel to the ground
-Hold the wand 1-2 feet from the fence.
-Avoid making too many passes over the same place. This was a waste of stain and time as the stain didn't have enough time to soak into the wood before running down the fence.

Pump spray with a foam pad as a back brush "rub". It really spreads it quickly

I had the same pump sprayer with the correct stain nozzle and tried to use it with Valspar semitransparent water based stain/sealant mix but it failed to spray at all and just came out like a stream. Dont know if my nozzle was improperly made or some form of user error but it was very frustrating and had to use a roller instead to finish the job which took much longer.

Same issue we're having. When we put only water in the tank we got a perfect 'fan' . It's almost like the stain is too thick for the pump sprayer.

I did that too, it's almost like paint and I think I jacked up the sprayer. Lol The gate looks good though, but it got on the cement and coated it. Lol

Great video. Do you have a dedicated pump sprayer for staining? How well did it clean up the tank? Reason I ask is I’m using a rather expensive battery powered sprayer and don’t want to ruin it? Thanks

Sorry for the delay but no I just wash it out immediately, and since it’s a water based stain it doesn’t have a problem. Hope that helps!

No back brushing required if applied correctly. I didn’t in the beginning so yes, that would have been appropriate. You can see a brush in my back pocket. I brushed the posts on the other side but again if done correctly it will dry correctly

I used 3 gallons for 40 ft of 6 ft high fencing. However you can easily do it with 2 if efficient with the application. It’s not cheap stain! And I think it says wait 24-48 hours.

Home Depot makes 2 types from their HDX line. I used the slightly more upgraded one that allows staining.

Good question. Pretty much the same way but I brushed the posts and maneuvered the sprayer into any gaps. Just keep in mind it sprays everywhere so cover anything nearby.

There are two versions of the Home Depot brand HDX, it’s the one that’s slightly more expensive but can do stains as well. Just be warned it goes everywhere when spraying! Lol

Correct. However one was a complete waste of time and stain because I was over spraying. Therefore, while the result is the same, multiple passes using extra stain only yielded a waste of about a gallon of stain. And at $44/gal it gets expensive quickly!
