Tom, you are 100% correct stand up your trees, any trees. We don't have hurricane in Paso Robles but we have crazy wind storms in the winter on top of the mountain. You'r giving me great ideas on nail two by four to the trees. Thank You.

@SleepyLizard2 ай бұрын
another tip: don't listen to social media on how to protect the tree ahead of the storm either. I saw people suggesting you strap your tree to a fence, or stake it rigidly. Fences are the first things blown down in storms and if you stake the tree it loses flexibility.

Safety is very important and I'm happy that you are safe. Well, my remaining plants are not safe since this fungus is spreading. I didn't even know how destructive and persistent root rot can be. I checked the root ball a different avocado tree (a lighter green seeding) that was a bit younger and was healthy up until early September and guess what I found - black and mushy roots with few partially pale roots. I'm noticing a pattern with this rot. The cutting just dropped the leaves, which are dead apart from the handles which are portion of leaf tissue remaining. I'm still in disbelief. I wasn't expecting things to go this way. And about the apple seedlings - the drought was very extreme in August and no one was there to water them, so you know what happened (RIP). 2021 was the first year for my OG avocado as well as some smaller ones. 2022 was kind of stale, but still fantastic for my avocados - growth and development. 2023 could be the best and worst year simultaneously, the OG avocado reached 3 feet and was exceeding my expectations, but in August that year, it started gong downhill. My mango dying from spider miter adds up to the pain. And 2024 - only disappointment and fake hope offered from February. I lost over 10 avocados, including the main ones from root rot. I won't try to grow papaya, pineapple or other tropical fruits until I eliminate the fungus to some extent. The only thing I have remaining from the OG avocado is the cutting in water which still has a very green stem and a shoot with healthy apical meristem. That cutting contains the DNA from my OG avocado. But the chances of the cutting recovering from the leaf loss is ridiculously low. I estimate about 1 in 10 million to 1 in 200 million, which is realistically impossible. I must say, I'm impressed at the fact that the cutting is holding up. I know, I know, my update was bad, but I'm being honest at the very least. MY avocado journey is reaching the end, but it is what it is. I will still update and see if there's still hope or the cutting.

It's been 2-3 days since the sad demise of my avocado cutting which ended the journey. I'm still sad, but I was mostly upset yesterday night. I'm still taking care of the cutting, even though it's dead and probably meaningless. There's no signs of living tissue, or cells even. Tissue culture might help, but obviously I don't have the knowledge or resources or money to use some advanced biotechnological tools to multiply cells. The only difference between I can tell between a plant that had died years ago and this cutting is the fact that the cutting is still hydrated and firm. And even that I'd consider a small victory, but still not a sign of life.

So, I found an injured pigeon. I think the right leg is broken a bit and its left wing is damaged. But as long as I keep it safe and pray that the cats won't find it and you know... eat it. I will put some water and food in the cardboard. Yeah, I used a cardboard box as a home for the pigeon. I was very happy when the swift took off, knowing that it's free. I believe that I will feel the same way for the pigeon. As for the avocados, nothing much. The cutting is possibly succumbing to the Pythium fungi. I must say I'm impressed that the cutting is still maintaining that tiny green portion with some potential callues activity. I'm using a fungiccide and chamomile flowers as a mixture. You know, mixing with the water. But I can tell that there's a bit of that fungi still. This fugnus loves every bit of foliage, even if it's a tiny shoot apical meristem. I will search for willow and birch trees for small twigs I can use to soak in water for a day to make a natural rooting hormone and increase the chances of recovery. But like I said, the avocado series ultimately ends if the cutting, which containing the DNA of the OG tree dies. But if it survives, I will continue growing avocados. I'm somewhat optimistic due to the cutting's resilience. I hope the pigeon recovers and I also hope the cutting somehow recovers, somehow. What are your thought on me saving the pigeon?
@SleepyLizard2 ай бұрын
My thoughts on the pigeon: you've been nursing your trees so if you show it the same attention and care then you'll help it recover.

You forgot step 7. If you had to trim all the top branches out then you need to give that trunk some "sun-screen" so it can handle the full sun it is going to receive. A lot of people will paint it white to reflect the sunlight that is going to hit it without protection.
@SleepyLizard2 ай бұрын

That's the key I tell people. You need to dig a hole under where the tree pulled out of the ground. I also like to cut the broken roots clean and seal the cuts. I use a Bobcat for standing up trees and a hose to flush the soil around the roots as it stands up. Then I put the best soil I can find as a filler.
