Ryan Vanderveen shows you the ropes of the HUGE standup slides that he has become notorious for. Ryan recently switched out to some Metro Motion wheels and had this to say about them:
"Metro Motions have a super consistent and easy to control slide that is really confidence inspiring when trying to learn new things, or push the limits on tricks that you already know."

Those were some of the sickest long standup slides I've seen. Mad props. I just ordered the micro motion wheels, 63mm 83a. I haven't tried holdin a slide like that since I fractured my wrist. Got in a bit of sand when I tried a long slide like that and my board and feet went out from under me downhill goin like 30mph.

I was having the same problem like a month ago.. but I was on a smaller hill that was pretty long but it wasn't steep and it had pretty grippy pavement, I got up to like 25-30 feet but I went to a really steep hill with nice smooth non grippy pavement and going the same speed I got close to 40 feet, that helps and obviously just going faster helps

It's definitely technique, *1st. Carve*, *2nd. Bend knees with more weight on the front leg*, *3rd. Kick out* (you could swing your arms with your waist if you want), *4th. Lean back* and make sure with your front leg it's stiff enough so when the back wheel breaks traction, your front wheels break traction along with the momentum of the back wheels (at this point you should be anywhere from 45 to 90). I literally have 2 weeks into practicing (not everyday though) like every other 2 days, and I'm relatively good. Although at first I was ready to give it up, as I was only getting my back wheels to break traction, it's because I wasn't leaning back enough (because of fear) and stiffening that front leg *(to push up towards the board)*

@Houdini116 It's all about counter-rotating your upper body the opposite way that you throw your hips and then you need to bring it all back to center when your ready to end the slide. It works the same way that a skateboarder or snowboarder boardslides on a rail.

In my recent experience I've found that staying a little further behind the front truck actually helped lengthen my slides. I'm not sure if this applies quite as much for drop-throughs seeing as when I move my front foot back I also move my back foot over the rear truck mounting. Try it out though. I was surprised just how much it helped me when I did.

i just recently got passed the 180 only problem like 3-4 weeks ago. To fix it, you wanna just practice doing really big heelside carves while leaning back, and then when you're ready, you'll feel it and you'll just kick it out into something bigger. That sounded kind of wrong lmao but it worked for me and now i'm working on doing 30 foot stand ups.

So I just learned how to do a stink but yesterday so I decided how to do this trick today so I watched your video then went to my spot and litterly was able to do it within ten minutes I pulled off a 90 degree slide only because I got launched off but still thanks guys
@voodooxcxl
@voodooxcxl 12 жыл бұрын
@ChillChillChilll youre doing it right. When the board slides at 90 degrees the wheels stop moving causing uneven wear on the wheel (flatspot, ovalization) and the board can ice out which means you will lowside and that sucks
@supersmartfood
@supersmartfood 12 жыл бұрын
i have done freeride on 4prez no problem, although a more buttery wheel would help when learning, you're going to want to lean back/forward a lot when first learning and make sure to carve into the slides.
@MotionBoardshop
@MotionBoardshop 13 жыл бұрын
@setosail "icy" is when the wheels feel like they will suddenly lose alot of grip in their slide. This usually happens when you turn the board at 90* in relation to the direction that you're going. Some wheels are icier than others, but generally the "icyness" can be overcome by keeping your board at an angle rather than at straight 90*.
@MyWoody26
@MyWoody26 13 жыл бұрын
@MrCapinchuckl I got them and they seem fine if you want a little bit of carve but not like hardcore really easy carves but still nice. Mostly depends on bushings and wheel size though. If you put some really nice cone bushings in it will carve perfect but I ride barrels.
@MotionBoardshop
@MotionBoardshop 13 жыл бұрын
@ChillChillChilll Just remember to stay smooth and not make any abrupt movements. Carving into the slide, kicking it out slightly, wheels release, lean back but stay above your board and play the balancing game as it slides.

Previous responses: merks91: that happened to me at first, just keep practicing. start small, learning to bring back little speed checks before you throw all your weight into a big standup. nando350dx: keep your back hand behind you, same thing with your shoulders. BTW good work Ryan, nice video =)

i just got the landyachtz 9two5 and its my first board. i wana learn how to do standup slides and 180s but lots of people have told me i need to be going pretty fast to do them. how fast do you think would be good for standup slides? also, do i need to be going fast for standup 180s? thanks!
@MotionBoardshop
@MotionBoardshop 13 жыл бұрын
@Houdini116 No worries, something that helps bring the board back is how you wind your body up when you break out for the slide, once you successfully break out a slide always LOOK at the direction that you want to go. That will help wind your body the right amount so it will spring back and the board should naturally come back into grip. Hope that helps man.

@ChaoTawaf23 THE FASTER THE LONGER but there are a few other variables: 1:pavement grip 2:wheel grip (shape, durometer) 3:hill steepness (to carry speed while sliding) 4: technique (don't front load your weight onto your toes too much) 5: headwind or tailwind 6:tight wheels

how does the 9two5 compare to the shallow drop for freeriding. i have a earthwing supermodlel with indys and i just top mounted it to see how it feels cause the shallow drop is a top mount. ive noticed that the top mount is more turny but i havent benable do do any slides yet (concussions blow). what are some differences between drop and top mounts while sliding. sick ass vid though.

Hey so ive got 180 slides down no problem at all (heelsides anyways) but whenever i go in for powerslides i have 1 of 2 things happen. 1. i start to powerslide but my board just stops immediatly. 2. i go in for a powerslide but my front wheels dont just let go easy they try to stay locked and i kick so hard to get them sliding that i freak out. seconds hard to explain but my front wheel just has a lot of resistance and then when it gives it ruins my balance? anyways, should i just movee feet or?

I am hoping to get some very soon but I want to know if they are nice and stable and can carve really good? Also do you think they are good for sliding? Where I am gonna get them they only have 50 baseplates are they good? @jassooonnnn7 well if ur flatspotting ur wheels, then you should try to do like a huge 180 stand up slide like at 0:47, but to keep them under 90 like i like to do and then bring it back, u just need to carve toe side into the slide like they said, but instead of carving heel side again, u just kick it out to start sliding and keep ur shoulders at the angle u want ur board to be going which is around 70 or even 80
