Great Video for beginer like me. Actually I am professional teacher in school for Robotics lesson. Now I am old enough ( 74 ) and step into plantations. My first plantions are Fruits and vegetables such as Banana Cabbage and Chillie. I have zero knowledge of my time passing job. Viewing in KZbin videos mostly from Philippines expart and farmers uploaded. Especially Banana platations so now I do well with my small farm. Fortunately because of my success story my friend from our church council gave me her Cacao farm newly planted but not yet complete. Actually their family main business was rice mills and many others so no man power to take care of Cacao farm. That's why I can get it. As per this video teaching me, I am dare to take responsibility to get green and having good quality fruits. Thank you so much for original uploader for this Cacao lesson. I am sure will come with my questions or query for my new farm. Advance wishing you all "" Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2021 "". May God Bless all of you. This is Harry from Chiang Rai - Thailand.

Very informative.. Thanks for sharing sir.. Tanong ko lang sir how many pods kaya can be harvested in a month per tree., at saka how many pods to make a one kilo of fermented beans... Baka mkatulong ito pag forecast for long term ROI.. Kasi We've started planting 900 cacao trees last yr, kaya lang medyo malaki na nagasto namin dahil we are paying for fixed monthly rate sa caretaker, direct labor, materials & other overhead cost. hindi kasi kami nag undergo nang seminar, coaching lang. I need to compute to compute for cost and return analysis.. Salamat po...
@cacaocultureph
@cacaocultureph 3 жыл бұрын
I can not promise you that you will get this numbers but the well managed farms that I've seen is having 3kg of dried beans per tree per year. If you are able to reach that based on your current trees that's 2.7 tons of dried beans. National average is just less than 1kg dried beans per tree. Depending on your farm practice, it takes 2 years for the trees to start fruiting, then at year 5 pa po sya maging mature. Maraming factors po talaga and labor cost per area po differ greatly. Also how you manage your farm effect your output. I hope our answer helped you. Good Luck on your cacao journey

Standard distancing is 3x3 for cacao and you can plant banana in between. However there will come a time when the cacao trees have grown and it will be hard for bananas to grow. Take this into account. Banana will earn during the early years then transition to cacao.

Hi guys!! What a great video! I would love to learn more about seedlings, grafted vs ungrafted. Where I am seedlings are mostly grown from seed. I don't know if there are measures that can be taken early on in the growing phase to ensure a hardy tree.
@cacaocultureph
@cacaocultureph 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there Nat! We are pleasantly surprised to hear from you around these parts of the internet hahaha. We appreciate you taking the time to watch our video. We will probably do a more in depth video on grafted vs ungrafted seedlings but here's the lowdown on seedlings. The basic objective is to have the best cacao seedlings to be planted in your farm / area. Using Darwin's Natural selection theory we want to have the cacao seedlings with the best chance to survive and be productive for a very long time. Tips on Seedlings 1. Use a large seedling bag 7x12 to allow the roots to grow and spread out comfortably during the growing period (3-6months). Smaller seedling bags is used by some nursery operators to save on space/cost but will cause roots go round and round the longer it is in the bag. This seedling will not be good in the field when planted. cacao tree roots grows downwards and spreads out, larger seedling bags allows room for roots to spread out and grow during this early phase. 2. Use large cacao seed/bean variety for seedlings. In our area we typically use UF18 variety cacao seeds as the root stock. This variety is known to have larger size seeds so we are improving our chances for a better root stock compared to using smaller size seeds. 3. Culling - You will probably have to do this 3-4 times throughout the duration of the 6month growing stage. This is definitely the Quality Control -the survival of the fittest mode- before you even plant in the field. This step allows you to pick out seedlings that are underperforming, because these are the seedlings that you definitely do not want to have on the field. Be the coach and put in the best players on the field hahaha. cull before grafting and cull before allowing them to be planted in the field. 4. Grafting allows us to cultivate certain varieties that we want. Make sure that scions used for grafting is from high performing /producing mother cacao tree. The seedling takes on not only the variety characteristics but also the production characteristics of the mother tree (higher chance). Grafted seedlings is marketed here as faster growing and quicker to bear fruit but this not 100% factual. Soil quality and farm management plays are larger role on this compared to just having a seedling grafted. Grafting (from high yield mother trees) improves the chances of the seedlings to take on those similar qualities. Grafting typically happens on the 3rd month. Grafted seedlings allows the luxury of having to select varieties that we want and increases the probability of having high yielding trees. The tips above are just some ideas on how to improve the probabilities in our favor before planting them in the field. Hopefully these has increased our chances in planting the best ones on the field.

Hi thank you for watching our videos. We personally refrain from sharing detailed numbers because we know that not all factors will be the same for everyone. We might do a video on our own breakdown but i'll have to dig on our records from 2017. But I am fairly certain that a good guide/estimate of cost would be 300-500 pesos per tree for initial startup cost. (1 hectare 1,100 trees). I hope that this answer has helped you. @cacaocultureph
@cacaocultureph 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Uchiha, thanks for watching our videos and supporting the channel. For your question it is very difficult to share a precise amount because there are a lot of variables in terms things that you need to consider and account for. For us we are leasing the land at a low price for long term (15 years). If you own the farm land then that lowers your cost. If you plan to buy land then the figures will be vastly different. Sourcing of planting materials ( cacao seedlings) in our area range would be 15-25 pesos per seedling - 1 hectare can have 1,100 seedlings planted in proper distancing so on the higher cost that 27,500 but you also need to consider transportation cost to your farm etc. the best estimated investment is 300-500k range per hectare. I hope that our answer was able to help you out. Good luck on your cacao journey

Interesting, how can I know or select good seed from a pot of cacao
@cacaocultureph
@cacaocultureph 2 жыл бұрын
Good seeds for planting you need to start with cacao variety with big seeds as your root stock. Then you let it grow and select those seedlings that grew poorly and take them out of the lot (this process is called culling) , leaving only the best growing seedlings to be planted on your farm. Usually people don’t want to waste the seedlings they planted that’s why they want to plant all of it in the farm (even the bad ones) so they end up with poor growing trees

Good Day Sir, I am a 3rd year BS in Agriculture student of VSU major in Horticulture specializing plantation and I am planning to have a thesis study of cacao seedlings however I am struggling of finding a thesis problem about cacao seedlings, thus, I would like to ask sir what are the problems you have encountered of growing cacao seedlings?
@cacaocultureph
@cacaocultureph 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, thank you so much for watching our videos and for commenting on our channel. I think there should be a standardization of cacao seedling cultivation process that would lead to optimum seedlings to be planted on the field. Like how big seedlings bags are, the height of the seedling trunk before grafting (measurements). How to identify weak seedlings for culling. Most of what I am sharing here are protocols based because farmers tend to plant everything kasi "sayang" which will lead to lower farm yield kasi pangit pala ang seedlings that they were growing. I don't know if the answer helped you in your quest for a thesis topic but for us I would appreciate how horticulture scientific approach can be simplified to communicate to the common farmer on how to cultivate better seedlings.

Hi! Thank you for creating this video, we found it very informative. My husband and are thinking about starting a Cacao business out there back home. We have been looking for land to buy BUT we're not quite too sure where would be the best place. I know you mentioned Davao but do you have any suggestions out in Luzon? Preferably within the Calabarzon region, but any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Also I messaged your shop in FB for any direct email where I could reach you. It would be great if you would be able to connect with us. Thanks!

Thanks for watching our videos and supporting the channel. While we may want certain crops to plant, the size, location and condition of the farm may dictate otherwise. This means that depending on the factors you may need to adjust for which crop may best suit your small area. However, success is never guaranteed in agriculture, nor in any other business. Size of the farm is not a guarantee that you will be a success.

As an intercrop strategy i think that’s ok in the beginning however once the cacao trees grow the canopy would cover the papaya trees. We did banana intercropping early on and now our banana production is now limited to the perimeter of our farm

Hi Jonathan, thank you for watching our videos and commenting on the channel. We truly appreciate it! For your question, I am not sure if there are specific locations in South Africa that can grow cacao but I am sure that it would be possible. There might already be certain farming practices or technologies that can address the heat in your area maybe like drip irrigation in the farm might work. I hope that we were able to answer your question. Good luck on your cacao journey

Hi Ken, thank you so much for this video. I'm currently still a student in Malaysia and i'm very interested in wanting to have a cacao farm of my own later on. I'm currently trying to find source material for me to learn as much as i can on how i can get started. My immediate concern is what should i be investing in first. Should i be looking into getting farmland first or should i start with making a seedling nursery first. And as i have no experience whatsoever, I'm constantly trying to figure out whats the first step i need to do. As right now it seems like im jotting down and making notes of all these information but i do not know how i can actually start. Your guidance is much appreciated.

Hi Razzan😊 thank you so much for watching and commenting on our videos. Happy to hear from you. We have chocolate maker friends in Malaysia and we would really like to visit your country soon😊 For your question, our advise would be continue studying the value chain for cacao in Malaysia. Like most things in real life agriculture business there is no better way to learn than through experience (yours or through others). Figure out the gaps and opportunities and focus your efforts there. Apply or work with companies that are already in the value chain, learn the ropes. To grow economies of scale in the Different aspects of the value you would require different kinds of resources and skills. For example if it is the farm level you would need vast amounts of land to grow cacao and that would require a lot of manpower etc. Patience is key, especially at your age. Do not rush into quickly investing into it without fully understanding what you will get yourself into. I hope that our advice would be able to help you in your journey. There is no clear cut steps 123 to get int the business. Entrepreneurs find look at problems, situations and find opportunities so our advice is think more think like an entrepreneur first and figure out the opportunity 🍫 good luck and your cacao journey Razzan

With regards to marketing cacao beans, are the farmers assured of stable market price with good returns, or the price fluctuates, how does government agencies or NGOs assist the farmers competitiveness. Are there cooperatives or processing plants to enhance pricing of raw beans? I'm thinking to invest on cacao farming but needs some assurance. Thank you.
@cacaocultureph
@cacaocultureph 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, cacao is a commodity so it is subject to price fluctuations and changes. There are no assurances in the business. There are different NGOs and cooperatives that helps level the prices but ultimately it does depend on market forces. Location also plays a factor in terms of price. I think in any business there are no assurances.

Can you share how much yield per year. Or any ideas on estimated profit per number of cacao trees or area of plantation per month / year/ or season. How’s the market for cacao, outlook. Demand, etc.. thank you!
@cacaocultureph
@cacaocultureph 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mrk G for commenting on our video. We desperately want to say that cacao farming is going to be always profitable but we are realistic and unfortunately there are a lot of factors that play into this. National average is below 1kg per tree and that is not good at all. We are far from being experts at this and we’ve seen high yielding farms that can produce 3kg-4kg per tree annually. Also you have to take into consideration local demand in the immediate area of your farm. Baka low ang buying in your local area. Pre-covid numbers indicate Market for cacao globally is increasing primarily in Asia because of rising income levels. However with the pandemic there was a definite drop in the numbers but outlook is still positive.

@@cacaocultureph thank you for responding. I’m in my 40’s , looking to get into it but thinking I’m kinda late in the party , outlook definitely is robust . Philippine cacao sourcing will definitely explode internationally, some local players now getting in the chocolate business buying up raw locally. I’m excited for you,. I know it’s been there but it’s new era for cacao in pinas and farmers are yet to dial in with quality growing, organic, etc..you mentioned elements and environment but non particular region in the Philippines that has best potential for growing. Interesting to see where the best cacao quality will grow realizing we’re not quite at the equator belt ..I’m hoping research to follow from our govt. Well, great job on educating people.
