Also: even if you overbuild the incinerators to take care of landfills, you can shut the incinerators off after the landfills are empty to save the budget be clicking on it and pushing the bottom on the top right of its panel
@control_the_pet_population3 жыл бұрын
You can also pull one over on the game mechanics if you are in a pinch... but it requires some pre-planning. When placing a landfill, put it out of the way on it's own side street and leave enough room for six grid spaces on at least one side. Once it gets filled, demolish the road that heads out to the rest of the city and surround the landfill on all sides with a one-way road in a closed loop. Then build one incinerator somewhere on that one-way road loop. Set the landfill to empty and the trucks will go around the loop taking their garbage right to the incinerator without clogging up traffic on other city streets. This will take awhile to empty, as the incinerator will quickly reach capacity itself, but you won't impact the rest of the city at all beyond some budget funds. Granted, it's a bit of an exploit and not "realistic".. but with the unmodded traffic AI being as goofy and unrealistic as it is... sometimes it makes sense to leverage a slight exploit to maintain your overall sanity.

A bit off topic, but speaking of mods: a short while ago, you linked a video from another channel of somebody building a cargo port. It was very nicely built, very detailed and realistic. However, I found it a lot less interesting to watch precisely because just about everything on the map was hand-placed from custom assets. I don't mind the use of mods, quite the opposite, but what I really enjoy about building stuff and seeing stuff get built is watching game mechanics in action. That might shine through in some of the ideas I've shared, but to me it's particularly interesting to see what happens when, for example, you introduce a new transit line, or zone an area in a certain way, and the game world reacts to it. Mods, including custom assets, can absolutely enhance this experience, but when a game - any game - is modded to the point where the original mechanics are no longer recognisable, it isn't really fun for me anymore. So, keep on building!
@CityPlannerPlays4 жыл бұрын
Makes sense. For me, I enjoy the same kinds of videos you do (hence my play style), but can also appreciate a good detailer every now and then - mostly because at that point it is like looking at a detailed painting to me. I agree that it is unrecognizable at that point and basically a different game.
@AndyBestHP4 жыл бұрын
I agree, there's a point where some players are just building models, so to speak, that's fine for people who want to do that, awesome in fact, but a different thing. I like having to succeed with the mechanics. Part of city builders for me has always been that you have to make it work as a 'real' city to some extent. What I love about this channel and Phil's main series, is that you get real insight into what would be possible or not in real planning, and why. You don't have to follow the principles exactly, but working within them has improved my game, and led me to rediscover my enjoyment of it. Plus, across 2020, and still now, we need positive, smart stuff more than ever.
@patrikhjorth32914 жыл бұрын
@@AndyBestHP Yes! I don't mean that doing a detailed modded build is wrong, of course, it's just not my preference. Back when I played Fallout 4, I got _really_ into settlement building (you can see some of it among my uploads, if you're interested), and I liked building "functional" settlements where the settlers could live and work and be safe. However, I also enjoy watching people build plastic model kits in great detail. It fills another creative niche, I guess.

Just bought this off Steam, and realised there is no tutorial in-game. I'm only bought the base game first to see if I'm interested in city building game but many tutorials in KZbin are either few years back then or done with all the DLCs. Thank you so much for your tutorial for vanilla version of the game!

I get SO annoyed when my grid doesn't line up from 1 area to another or when my road ends up in 89 degrees instead of 90 degrees.. just doesn't feel right to me.

I know this is an old video but damn. What a perfect video for new players like myself. No waffle, informative while also showing your personality and humor. Great video you from the past!

Really helpful! Took me a few evenings of following your steps to build a similar city while playing the game, but all around a super useful video. Moving on to part 2 now!

Two Rivers map has one tiny problem: No Ship line. Thus, you can never make harbors.

Thank you so much! Nothing like learning from a city planner. I will sit through this entire video so that my cities can be better, I tend to struggle with layout and traffic.

because of how soothing your voice is, you make a 90minute video feel like 10mins, so enjoyable, I love your content!
