I’ve just began to show interest in digital marketing. My main worry is delivering the service that the client will have spent money on, I decided I’m going to work in my friends agency for a few months in different positions just to learn the in’s and out’s. The get rich quick mindset is a good motivator but can be the very reason an aspiring entrepreneur might never have longevity for their service and business overall. Thanks for your honesty, hard legitimate work pays off!

Okay I’m so glad to see someone opposing the other videos. Telling people that they need “zero experience in marketing” to start a digital marketing firm… HUGE red flag. I work as freelance account manager and strategist. I always wondered why on Upwork there were so many people looking for media buyers with the exact same descriptions and $500 a client offer. After a while I started to see the videos and put two and two together. No wonder so many of my clients had these horribly managed accounts and clueless agencies. It's truly a pandemic of fake businesses. Appreciate you addressing this.

Aaron, I couldn't agree more with you! I've been in the industry for 12 years, owning an agency for 6 years (before it got "cool"), and unfortunately, we're the ones that have to deal with these "agencies" because we pick up the pieces from these people taking money from businesses who have no idea what they're doing. Great video! I appreciate your content

I 100% agree with you. I spent 6 years in my service company, 3 years practicing PPC, work with hundreds of shops and distribute film to my industry AND tint about 350-500 cars a year. I still felt very under skilled to offer PPC work to other shops. When they say it’s easy to make 10,000 a month I wish they would talk about the length of that client. It is not easy to scale and you need to know many skills to offer a digital marketing agency.

Such a breath of fresh air Aaron, It's literally a conveyor belt strategy with this "arbitrage" method. Your work will look very generic and inconsistent I'd imagine, since you won't have a stable team. I couldn't in good conscience charge clients a premium price while paying someone from a poorer country very little to then pocket the profits for myself. I know that's literally what most businesses do with cheap labour. I'm hopefully going to start my own digital agency within the next few years, I am currently doing my MSc international marketing but did my undergrad in commercial photography. So product Photography is what I specialise in but I also do graphic and web design. At the moment while I'm studying I'm building up my website with client work, which I'm actually doing for one of my Modules at university. I have a few friends that are freelancers so if I were to do the whole hiring freelancers it would be them I'd go to, and I would also get involved myself and learn about their craft so I actually have a clue of what they do so I can create project briefs for them. Yeah I won't become a millionaire but I'd be doing something I love and to a higher standard. To make a business like this takes time and it needs a solid foundation not a weak one that will burn out quickly

Thank you so much for clearing this up, literally no one else talks about this. Offering a service that you know nothing about seemed pretty weird to me. It's like saying "I know absolutely nothing about construction, but I'm going to become a general contractor and hire 10 people to work on people's homes while also subcontracting to roofers plumbers and electricians." I guess they omit the part that you have to get experience because that costs money - which goes against their claim that you can start this with no money at all.

this is the best advice i've heard from a digital marketing channel so far. Don't learn how to start an agency. Learn the skill that will help you help your desired client. This was eye opening because I would get so frustrated learning how to start an agency when i should initially just focus on perfecting the skill that will ultimately get me the clients. Also learning how to sell. I will focus on those things first. I used to get so caught up in trying to start a website, automations, crm systems, onboarding etc. But once i have the skill set that i want to sell it will be alot easier to sell and everything else will fall into place.

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! It is so frustrating seeing all guys who are effectively just sh*tty freelancers calling themselves agencies. To really build a true agency with employees and different departments. It takes an INCREDIBLE amount of work. Something that I do not agree with is that you need to be and EXPERT in one of the services you offer. I am a firm believer in hiring people much smarter then yourself. Now it becomes harder if you are just hiring freelancers. But thats why most of my employees work in the physical office and are full time employees that only work for me. Then I can focus on building my sales team. I am not sure where you are at with your agency but keep up the great work man! And yes SALES is a huge skill you will need.

So recently i started a graphic/logo design brand. been doing designs for some years for clients and i thought i could expand my job as a brand and work with others to create a place for people to get work and for clients to get results by me and future colleagues. I've recently started and I'm loving the process of creating a brand and doing business management stuff. a dream of mine. but i understand that I'm not gonna be making mony of of it for a while, so i'll be working my a' off for some time, but i enjoy it alot and want to work on it. i still have my remote job and make some money to take care of my expenses, but my main focus is on this brand and getting attractions towards it. i don't dream about this becoming a million dollar brand or be something super special, but i really love the process, and this kind of work is really enjoyable for me. there is a thing tho, yesterday i watched a video with some title like " how young success, young entrepreneurship is a lie". well as i said I'm not dreaming about this to make millions, but still im following a dream of creating a brand at a young age (23). the video kinda said you should work for others, learn till you're older, then become an entrepreneur when you are 30 or 40. and a lot of comments were agreeing with it and they said they are 30 40 and know what they are talking about. so now, im wondering if im doing something wrong? am i wasting my time with this? should i just give up on this and go work for others? i said i still have a job and always had one since i was 15 16, but my main focus now is building this thing and when it's getting results, im slowly going to go full time on it. so I'm in a dilemma right now, should i cross off the brand and just continue doing work for other till im older, or i should stick with it and do something that is important to me and im passionate about? i don't have a single doubt about myself, and my potential, but i don't want to do something that is not what i think it is

This is great, I’ll definitely be checking out more of your videos. I have a local family friend real estate agent who’s helped us out and been close these for 10 years. I was thinking about reaching out to her and offering to build a website, set up auto text back and run ads for free in exchange for referrals as she knows many real estate agents and loan officers. Of course I’ll implement all of your suggestions also. Whats your opinion on this strategy?

Don’t believe anyone who’s is trying to sell you something, at the very best they are speaking half truths… the best way to start anything is to read and research about it then after you get a hold of the concept do it till your comfortable with it… but sometimes u get lucky and you start making the money, depending on what you begin with and when you begin it… if your a hustler then do it and if u fail then u learn from ur mistakes…

Personally I think it’s good to have a general understanding about all platforms BUT have expert knowledge in one area (for me it’s Google Ads). The reason for this is because if you excel in one area you charge a much higher management fee and you can bring significant business changing results that are worth every cent that you are charging.

hey aaron your video is pure facts! i'm learning the hard way that running an smma agency isn't as easy as a lot of these guru's make it seem. Now i understand that i need to become an expert to my field (facebook ads) but being new to the industry and having no experience on sales etc i'm having a lot of trouble in finding clients that i can work for and gain experience. I have no money (still in school) and no experience running facebook ads. How can i attract new clients, and convince them that i can help them? with no testimonials and no prior experience? and while not having any money to run advertisements for myself to gain experience through my agency first, before feeling ready to serve people?

I strongly recommend you start a simple business first, and hone in your marketing skills there. It is incredibly difficult to start a marketing agency without any money or experience, I genuinely have no idea how this trend became a thing. Start a simple clothing brand, blog, service company, etc. and learn to market it well. Then you can pivot to helping other companies like yours with their marketing. The company you start doesn't necessarily need to become highly profitable or scalable, you just need a sandbox to practice real marketing and sales. I recommend a service industry company if you're serious about moving to social media marketing, because more skills you learn will translate since a SMMA is a service company.

@@dimitrisatha573 I suggest reaching out to friends and family and seeing if they know anyone that you could do work for free. You could also reach out to small businesses and do the same, offer services for free. Of course in both scenarios they would pay for the ads, but you won't be charging them for your time and expertise. This will hone your skills in the industry you want to be in. After that you can then market yourself to businesses confidently.

Hi Aaron, great video and thanks for highlighting this issue of digital marketing agencies selling the dream without helping people achieve overnight success while travelling the world without a care. I have been in digital marketing for around 10 years and don't know any business owners with this kind of lifestyle. I and many other honest agencies/freelancers in Australia are happy you have highlighted the real-world skills needed to become a specialist in one of the digital marking channels to be a proficient user of Google Ads, SEO or some other channel. It takes time to become an expert, and there is no way anyone will make the ridiculous amounts of money these people claim is possible.

Hi Joshua, I actually don’t use any external software for Google Ads. For reporting I use datastudio (Looker) and import data from Analytics, Google Ads and Google sheets. As long as your data in Google Analytics is correct you can then add last period or last year comparisons in Datastudio to let the client know how the performance has increased or decreased

I strongly recommend you start a simple business first, and hone in your marketing skills there. It is incredibly difficult to start a marketing agency without any money or experience, I genuinely have no idea how this trend became a thing. Marketing is such a quickly evolving, complex skill that I can't imagine it being a good way to start entrepreneurship off the bat. This is compounded by the fact that there are so many shitty marketing agencies, that every single one of your leads will have had terrible experiences with them. Every client I've ever had has been scammed by SMMA's that failed to deliver what was promised. Start a simple clothing brand, blog, service company, etc. and learn to market it well. Then you can pivot to helping other companies like yours with their marketing. Agree, these youtubers do build succesfull agencies but even if their way works to earn a bit of money, i wouldn't want to have build my agency on kind of scamming my first few customers just to get money. I wouldn't be able to live with the fact that i sell a service from which i know i can't really do yet. My question to you is when would you say is fair to start going to companies and offer your service? i have learned google ads just by watching a lot of videos and trying it on 2 accounts succesfully (20k budget per month and 3k budget per month) but am still not sure if i am ready to offer it since i don't want to let someone that pays me 2000$ a month down with bad results. Kind of in a moral dilemma

Hi Aleks, that is a great start with the 2 x campaigns. What I did was use the results from my first campaign, this the gave the new client an insight into the type of results that I could get for them. This is why I recommend that you start to get clients who are in the same niche (but don’t a direct competitor) of your current accounts - so you can use related results. I hope that helps

Great advice but I don´t see the point in fronting these gurus. You are telling us, that we need testimonials and this is for sure right but most of the gurus show us actually how to get them. You don´t. You´re just saying that we need them. Everyone knows that you need experience in the field where you want to sell. But how do I get these testimonials without trying? The gurus tell us that we should offer 2 weeks of free work to learn this and get a testimonial for it. What´s your advice when it comes to first testimonials?
@AaronYoungGoogleAds
@AaronYoungGoogleAds 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, there is no way of hiding the fact that the first clients and testimonials are the hardest. My issue with the 2 weeks of free work is that with Google Ads 2 weeks is not relevant data as for many clients the acquisition window is 2 weeks. I do have other videos where I discuss a good starting point is reaching out to friends to see if you can do some free work BUT I would be doing at least 90 days of work and results before getting a testimonial. My whole point is that success takes time and it’s not just a quick win solution. Hope that makes sense
