Hi Rob, I've been following you for some time now, and I've just watched this video, I have to say there is some very good advice here to others that want to start there own business I wish someone had gave me this advice before I took the plunge in 2018. I started up by working after work for a few customers and then advertised in three areas in shop windows, I now have to confess to taking six and a half weeks off on the sick before I gave my notice in and I've never looked back, now I cannot believe looking back how I did it, I went out with and electric mower and strimmer 😂 I never had a leaf blower for two years I must admit that I soon brought a petrol mower a push rear roller 🙈 two years I used this for, looking back now I know why I lost so much weight to cut a long story short anyone who's new to this needs someone like you to point them into the right direction regarding equipment that they need and the motivation that's required, have a good new year Rob I'm looking forward to all the videos you post and to see your new second hand mower. Ps I have all the right equipment now to make my life easier

Good advice pal. I’m surprised you had trouble with the Hayter 48 Pro as that is my favourite mower. It’s the mower I still use today after buying it 10 years ago although I only have a handful of customers now after winding the business down.

The new Hayter wasn’t versatile enough. I found that the Honda hrx was a better allrounder. I am now looking or a good 21 inch rear roller mower.👍🏻

Hello Carl, I haven’t put my prices up yet. I will message every customer early February informing them of the price increase. I may lose a few , it’s my aim to drop a few , problem customers and try to replace with better , nicer customers.

Hello Cliff, rear roller mowers are much heavier and cut shorter, not as versatile as a four wheel. Some gardens are quite rough and a rear roller isn’t enough. I am doing a video on the subject soon. Good luck with your business, let me know how you get on.

Hello David. The Hayter is great when the weather is dry and you have a perfect lawn. For me it wasn’t versatile enough. Hence I got rid and bought the Honda hrx 537. All the best. 👍🏻

It’s been super reliable for 2.5 years, but I find the finish inconsistent in the wet, as it seems to have insufficient lift to stand the flattened grass up for cutting. Thanks, Dave

Better buying a mower for the wet days, Stihl, Husqvarna, Etesia and weibang with the highlift blade all are good at wet grass collection. Forgot to add, Massport mowers are completely open at the back so no chute to clog with wet grass.

How do you buy materials like seeds, soils etc and put it on an invoice etc. I'm struggling to think about the money aspect of it. Do you get the customer to pay for the materials. Or do you buy with you money and get them to pay you back on the invoice

That depends. Ring a few local firms , they should give you a free initial assessment/ interview regarding your business. Anything from £150 to £300 per year depending on the complexity of your business. All the best and good luck.

Hi Rob. Been gardening for nearly 30 yrs. Just wanted to say grass/ hedge cutting and tidying is NOT gardening. It is garden or grounds maintenance. I started through business link and my mentor had to show me the difference. Now I do gardening and grounds maintenance . Until you can tell the difference between a pelargonium and a geranium etc most "gardeners" just maintain . Since I started maintaining, I have on the job experience of working in clients greenhouses (not the average 6by6 ones) of taking cuttings, of all types. I maintained a veg garden and orchard ( standards and espaliers) before the internet by reading books. Plant and tree identification is key too. I had gone to agri college to further this, also knowing what time of year depending on species to prune is vital too. I.e clematis........... This is not a dig at you, just wanted to share what I know ! As for advertising, I have only worked by word of mouth, my work is of quality that I need not to advertise. (This is not a brag it's just down to being honest with clients and doing quality work) and spending time over a coffee talking to clients even if I'm late to next job. As for google............ Wait for the calls and emails wanting payments to raise you in the search bar...........🙄 they found me not other way round ! Any how, catch ye later 👍

I’m sorry but I could not go past and Ignore this comment…. I’m also a gardener of prestige knowledge… and I need to raise some points with you… Firstly, lawn and edging and cleaning is as much as a garden duty as it is to dig bulbs, feed lawn, seed plants, plants re allocation, cutting back, re-shaping, even growing veg. It’s all gardening and horticulture…. Secondly, you say you need to know the names of the plants and bla bla bla… well, I have worked in all season gardens exotic gardens inside private mansions (I’m sure with your years of experience you know what a all season exotic garden is) and I have worked with people that know almost little to nothing in gardening.. and in 2 seconds nowadays they can identify a plant with an app and deal with that same plant just like someone would that knows the name of the plant… I don’t have a business my self anymore, as I make much more money working for my private client. One client is all I have, but I have a 45 acre land, with a all season exotic garden, private forest , huge greenhouse with 30 vegetable beds where I grow everything including herbs…. I’m not gonna go into who I work or bla bla.. but i just want to say that you came here almost shaming this man saying basically he doesn’t do gardening when in fact he does…. Oh by the way, I’m a graduated physicist… but have no solid qualifications in gardening….. still look after a place that was designed by a previous flower show winner… I could go on and bla bla but no point. Only point I have is - keep up Max, and if you ever get stuck with something you can always reply here and we find a way to contact eachother. Keep up the honesty and ignore low ignorant people with little to low kindness. Big hugs from Windsor.

@@wealthgrowthtips2815 little to low kindness? i bet you had participation medals on your sports day ........ sometimes you have to face the truth, no matter if its brutal or feels wrong. cutting grass and hedges does not make you a gardener like you say you are a "physicist". your knowledge means nothing here, i was pointing out grass cutting etc. is not gardening but grounds maintenance, (i started on my local council you sound bitter that you cant emulate your previous show winner)........ since 94 i have been in business, only ever lost a client through death or moving away.........i still stand by what i say. i started via my local council doing "grounds maintenance" (not gardening) of parks, splays and greens. i also have clients of merit. and one client i have has a site of special scientific interest with limitation of my work and is mod property linked to stonehenge. (with rare orchids) i listened, but you are wrong in terminology. this is the reason why i unfollowed this site, and others. 28 years later i am not going to take advice from a physicist, like you are not going to take advice from a gardener.............lol ! but have a great day !
