What does it take to start a successful landscaping business? The answer is probably less than you think! Trevor Kokenge started Plan-It Vision with $300, running it out of his apartment, and in this interview you’ll find out how he did it.
Clicklease helps small business owners obtain the essential tools and equipment that they need to grow their business! Visit the link app.clicklease.com/inlineapp?... to learn more!
Trevor has a degree in Landscape Architecture, but he was still having trouble finding a good-paying job after graduating. He started picking up side jobs doing landscaping design and maintenance and soon realized he could make much more if he switched to that full-time. Today, Plan-It vision has an average revenue of $22,000 a month, with profit margins up to 33%.
Today, Trevor will share his insights on how to start a landscaping business on a shoestring budget. He’ll share how he spent his initial $300 and what tools and equipment are an absolute must-have. Just as impressive is the fact that Trevor runs his business out of a 12X12-foot shed, and you’ll see how he runs his business within those space constraints. We’ll also talk customer acquisition and the best advertising strategies for a start-up landscaping company.
When he started doing landscaping jobs Trevor was a one-man operation, but he’s since expanded his team to take on more work. He’ll share his tips and strategies for hiring and managing employees, including what systems he uses to keep jobs organized. Whether you’re considering a career in landscaping or looking for tips to run your current business better, you’ll want to hear Trevor’s insights.

The best thing about having repeat maintenance clients is you have predictable and steady income. And then you grow and narrow down to only the best customers and then your business is pretty much on auto pilot.

Hello, I know this is a bit of an older post, but I'm curious as to how you were able to have a landscaping business at 13, as you wouldn't have been able to drive at that point. Did you only operate in your neighborhood, did your parents drive you to people's houses, ect. Just wondering since I'm not old enough to drive quite yet and am looking at possible income opportunities. Thank you for your time, have a great rest of your day!
@yakalb93

@game-rat I think he was referring more to the maintenance work. At that age, your local neighbourhood and area would be your best bet. Maybe offer mowing, whipper snipping, and basic pruning as your services?

I've currently saved about 5k the last 3 months and I'm working towards saving about 15 to 20 k. I want to get a work truck tools and then I'm going to take a builder's license course and state exam for my builders license. After that I plan on going to trade school while subcontracting. My biggest inspirations is my dad and all of his brothers and my grandfather. My grandfather opened a fencing business and it's been family operated ever since. Some of my uncles including my dad went off to start their own business while my other uncle stayed and continued to run my grandfather's after he passed away. As long as you have a conscious and a heartbeat you can do anything you put your mind to.

I'm sorry, but I just started a lawn service, and this really gives people false hope. I currently have 32 yards, and I make roughly 35 to 40k a year. This is before tax, gas, and maintenance. For this guy to make 300k or more with an average yard being 100 a month, he would need at least 290 yards. With him only working 4 days a week, he has to do over 70 yards a day!!! Even with a 2 or 3-man crew, this is impossible.

Learning all the quick tricks and methods on how to improve someone’s yard to where you can make the neighbors asked for your business card. Honestly it’s my best opinion to work with someone in this field. Try to gain a lot of field experience as you can and save up some cash to buy commercial equipment, such as echo, blowers, Toro, 30 inch lawn mowers

It appears he has a decent maintenance and cleanup company. I can tell with his current equipment and setup he is not installing the landscapes you see drawn out on these sheets of paper. You can definitely get to where he is with the 300.00 invested (truck not included, you will need this or a minivan/some sort of transportation). I did the same thing and have grown in the same way as he, he is the norm in the landscape and construction industry. He has a long way to go before he has a real company but he definitely is making a living now. Kudos to him!

Glad to hear it Phil. You should consider joining Steel Toe University online. The group activity has quieted down in recent years, but there is a library of content that was developed that can help landscapers start their business with good info. I stay connected for the facebook group where I can ask questions when needed.

In 7th and 8th grade I went around and found 9 lawns to mow weekly during spring and summer. I would put all my equipment into a little garden trailer hooked to my dads riding mower and would drive around the neighborhood to my jobs. I charged $20 a piece. so I was making $180 a week at 13 years old. Then at 16, I got a job as an irrigation and landscape specialist for a landscaping company and worked there until I was 22. Now I stare at spreadsheets all day for a huge corporation and want to get back into landscaping haha. I want to go work for an established company though as the market is SO saturated with landscape companies.

$200,000.00 a year and climbing thats pretty good! At least i think lol lets say you divided it by 3 people lets say they all get paid the same that's around 66 or 67 thousand a year for each person. Even if you take away 20k from each person for the general maintenance on the tools they use. For a 4 day work week that's pretty good and if he uses electric than he will save even more

It’s possible to start with 300 dollars. If you’re mechanically inclined go on eBay and buy some old ass commercial lawn equipment that just need new carbs, replace the carbs and then use your personal vehicle and claim it on your taxes cus it’ll be eligible to be written off so then all you need is customers, start in the hood where the income is low and the grass is tall and offer 15 dollar lawn services but also call the city board for properties that need to be cut due to lawn violations and they prolly will pay you

Exactly what I was thinking. He's again in the "ignorant phase" like he called it himself. He could relatively easily grow bigger by hiring 1 or 2 more to help out. But it's been really inspiring to hear how he started and how he got where he's at doing something that most youngings these days would never even think about doing.

I bought a used mower a few years ago a 48" scag collected about 40 clients and had issues with the used mower. Which put me in a tight spot. I decided to buy a new mower and since have been working for a company 40+ hours a week to buy all tools and equipment needed I know have over 7000 in just mowers trimmers blowers a good edging shovel is over a 100 dollars. I enjoyed the video just think people should know the maintenance of a used mower in the end is gonna cost or put u in a tight spot don't think cheap this is ur future . U gotta spend money to make money just being honest I think 300 is unreal unless ur putting a mower in ur trunk of ur Camry. Which I'm not saying isn't possible js u want to look the part as well as do Good Work.

I was thinking the same thing! I have a decent full size van with a trailer hitch so i am thinking a small trailer for about $700 and a new push mower for about $300, Then i will need a trimmer and blower and edger and fuel cans and brooms and shovels and rake, Etc..And maybe a Decent zero turn mower..So really im looking at about $7 to $8k to get started with reliable and decent equipment!

@@johnsmith-wd5sq credit works but you don't want to go into debt on everything depending on your situation just buy 1 thing you need a week or if you get a job buy a required tool with that money but regardless have a primary income let this start out as side money Do good work and watch it grow so fast ul wish u started years ago!

@@eveleinnyokabi California is ideal for lawn care. 👌 In spite of all the competition, there's STILL tons of work out here. Too much! Weather is absolutely perfect, lawns aren't huge, and you can easily get $160 to $200 on one client per month. The side gigs in tree trimming is where a lot of the money is at. Just last week I made $600 in 4 hours on a $1,450 job.. 2 of our guys did most of the work. If you don't like yard work or being outdoors then this job isn't for you. But if you enjoy being outside and doing lawn care, well, the reward can be life changing. My immigrant father raised a family of 5, bought our home, cars and took my sister thru college all thanks to lawn care. And he did it one lawn at a time. Today, he's boss man. He hasn't gone out on routes for a few years now. All he does is drive around in a separate company truck checking up on clients, delivering small plants, and giving estimates on potentially new clients. He hasn't pushed a lawnmower in probably 10 years. And that's because he doesn't have to anymore. That should always be your goal.

Using quickbooks for credit card payments? You must be paying a premium for that, like 3 to 3.5% I could get that down to closer to a corporate rate and you can still use quickbooks. Not to mention you get that insurance to protect you from any sort of fraudulent charges.

Using a personal truck with those numbers, you still look young, so I’m assuming there’s still room to grow. I’d finance a work truck and let the personal be the personal.
