I remember a roleplaying forum and discord where me and one friend started a Secret Society and created some inside jokes, like "the Society is so secret that it doesn't do anything". It was seen just as a joke. The fun part is when the admins decided to delete it as an active and registed faction, we both got banned but we returned in secret and it became truly a secret society, and the two highest rank admins, the creators and some moderators joined in secret.

We were a group of haunters, where we were the ghosts. We would devise a large, numerous, and creative ways of scaring the shit out of people at common ghost haunts. I can not express to you how nerve wracking this can be, and all the shit you run into can truly get to you. It is weird to think of how scared you can get when your goal is scaring others, and how paranoid you would get.

@saintultra2737 Yeah, mainly use a number of tricks to make the house seem more active. Can be anything from rolled spider webs, string, magnets, structural modifications, and more to mess with the occupants. Few of us did those hantwd house tours, and realized the less there was, the more fear there would be. The major ones were some sort of sound that would barely register to people going on and off, and then items being in odd places. It might not seem like much, but a table that is propped up with stuff hanging off it is weirdly disconcerting for people.

The main lesson to take form this video is, don't involve any ritualistic torture and desecration in your rituals, not even in symbolic or allegorical form. You'll only end up attracting the attention of malicous, vengeful and/or demonic spirits (which can be cool if intented and if you have ways to bind and control the spirit). Part of the initiation ritual should also contain, not only a taboo but also a humiliation. There should be "Trials" before initiation. The more effort has gone into gaining admission to a group, and the enduring of humiliation during initiation, creates a Cost of Joining which psychologically increases the perceived value of membership, increasing the commitment and loyalty of the members. Without the Trials, the humiliation in the initiation alone should be good enough to create this sense of a "cost of joining", but with trials, it is more effective (which is why fraternities/sororities have their Hazing Week for applicants and new members). For talking about the society or activities in public without anybody noticing, these days is easier than ever, thanks to the mainstream popularity of roleplaying games. If you are not overly creative and want most of the legwork done by others, use the glossary from RPG like Kult, Ars Magica, Vampire: The Masquerade, Call of Cthulhu, Shadowrun, etc... If you are creative, make up your own, but be sure to keep the terms and allusions consistent in their flair, maybe create an actual RPG (or a campaign world to an existing RPG) that prominantly uses the words and themes used by your society. That way, even if somebody sees your ritual room with the remians of last nights rituals (or even witnesses your group perform a ritual), you can just claim, you were LARPing. The greatest challenge, the one I have not yet been able to overcome, is, how do you start your secret society or cult? Not the mechanical logistics of starting and running a club, but: how to broach the subject; how to suggest doing it; how to rationalise why it should be a secret society, not just a regular club (unless if it is obvious on grounds of illegality); how to make the suggestion without facing ridicule and humilation from your friends (or other people whos opinion of you may affect your life)

Hello, Catholic here. I was called upon to apparently fight someone on whether or not the body and blood were symbols or not. So let's start with materialism vs idealism. If God and spirits don't exist then sacred things can at most only be signs and symbols because they would have no real and substantial existence. If, on the other hand, we live in an idealist universe which is based on mind and in which matter is but a dream, then the fundamental substance of existence is meaning itself as generated by the Mind of the All which is Plato's Invisible Sun which is The Good. This sort of thinking was the basis for practices like the Egyptian and Hindu installation of the sound body/spirit of a god into a statue or image using seed mantras, hekau, or true names and words of power. This also would form the basis for several Judeo-Christian concepts such as the prohibition against worshipping idols, the prohibition against making a graven image of God, the insistence that God in some special way resided in the temple or was with those in whom his name resided, particularly that name given to Moses. It also goes toward explaining in what sense man is called a temple, because he is animated by the breath/spirit of God. In turn, that is why Jesus says that whoever mistreats even the lowest of men mistreats him personally and vice versa those who feed and clothe the poor are feeding and clothing Christ. Jesus himself is accorded special significance as God in the flesh precisely because the name of God is "in him". Far from being regarded as mere symbolism, it is regarded as the basis of Christ's divinity. Therefore, when the host is consecrated in the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit the bread becomes flesh in the same way and for much the same reason as Adam was made from dust: the spirit of the Lord has entered it because of the name it now bears. In other words, because Christianity presupposes an idealist universe, the bread IS the flesh BECAUSE it bears the name, the significance, the meaning. Because meaning itself is the fundamental substance in an idealist universe, that whose meaning has changed is itself transubstantiated. And, of course, as proof of that the Catholic Church has a long history of Eucharistic Miracles where the transubstantiated flesh loses its distressing disguise and becomes cardiac tissue and type AB blood that can and has been tested in laboratory conditions.

Your evidence for a mind and spirit based universe comes from many religions viewing material objects in some way, but that does not mean they’re all right? And many religions don’t believe in a mind or spirit based universe, even if they concede that matter has a less physical essence to it. In order to believe that the Eucharist is spiritually important matter, I would need to already believe in the personal Christian God, the divinity of Christ, and the universal religious efficacy of this ritual. Will you point to the Church’s written history of Eucharist miracles? Because they have a vested interest in promoting and exaggerating their own spiritual abilities. Your argument is basically 5 premises and assumptions that only hold true if you already hold a specific catholic world view. My argument is that the extraordinary claim of transubstantiation is simply a faith-based connection to the original figure of Jesus in order to increase the social and emotional power of the ritual. @Stoneworks Well, first of all other than Eucharistic miracles I hadn't pointed to any evidence that idealism is right and materialism is wrong, I simply pointed out that those contrasting possibilities exist. We experience both a physical world and a mental world. One or the other must be an illusion in some way. Either the mental world is an illusion based on physical organs which evolved for survival purposes, or the physical world is an illusory dream similar to those we have at night. If there's a religion the doesn't presuppose the predication of the physical on a substrate of the mental/spiritual I'd love to hear about it. The closest I could imagine is a kind of atheism that treats religion as a comfort food, like some Jungian pseudo-religion. Anyway, I'm not sure how one would even go about proving or disproving one or the other. If the physical world is a dream then, just as in a book or a dream, we cannot necessarily expect evidence to appear which will prove the falsehood of our physical reality. Conversely, if we live in a material reality we cannot "know" or "prove" anything because our minds are inseparable from our nature as animals with motivated reasoning. Every product of our mind would be but vivid animal hallucination and thus utterly unreliable. Each would only see what he or she expects, desires, or more accurately what a million invisible factor predetermined us to suppose without any real understanding on our part.

If the universe is based on a substrate of meaning, then the fact that enough people project that significance onto the bread is sufficient to make it so. The significance is the substance.

@Stoneworks Equally as possible a choice as believing matter is real and the mind is the illusion. Personally, with some of the bizarrely accurate results of the Stargate Project, some of the fantastic cases of remembering past lives that children have demonstrated, and the random number generator that seems to predict big catastrophes before they happen I would lean toward matter being the illusion. Seems to me there's quite a lot to suggest mind transcends matter which suggests that the mind is not a product of matter but is the more fundamental of the two. But I can hardly expect such things to impress a determined skeptic. If you're interested I recommend reading A Cardiologist Examines Jesus which goes over the Eucharist Miracles and the analyses performed on them.

Yeah, so the linens were moldy and mold can cause some very severe reactions. Given that it was stored in the one guy's car and he had the worst of it, seems like a very reasonable explanation. My assumption is that there was no/mild symptoms for the people who did not live in that house. When the immune system is fighting off disease (mold/fungus) it tends to cause the mind to to into a very strange state, with an increase of dreams being one of them. Once I had a fever dream while in Los Alamos about the US government wanting to make a superweapon and i had to solve a large 5 dimensional Rubik's cube to help them. It's a pretty thinly veiled metaphor, not going to lie, but I had a clean conscience when I had that dream, you know not having engaged in something taboo, so when I awoke it was strange. If these guys were participating in these taboo rituals, it would have been stressful, especially for those most likely to be impacted by the acts. At the time of the initial incident, the haunted one was carrying the object and had the most to lose if found out. Combined with breathing in the mold air, this would have caused very real symptoms like a haunting. I can't explain the second person feeling the same thing, but I suspect it has to do with them also breathing in the fungal fumes, becoming concerned after hearing the story of the first time the hand was placed on his shoulder, and the pheromones of the haunted one as he was becoming haunted. I mention pheromones for two reasons. One, the only times I have been complimented on my smell is when I have been generous to people. Two, when my father caught covid, he lost his sense of smell. It is so very easy to sneak up on him now because he does not have the ability to sense when a person enters the room without seeing or hearing them. All of this is to say, follow these instructions at your own peril. If you don't do something that doesn't put you in danger, you won't experience the same bond. But also, some fungal illnesses kill. I won't say these guys were lucky, but I will say this. Anthrax comes from soil, illnesses come from insects and other pests which are allowed to live in situations with poor hygiene. Sounds like they dealt with both demons (harmful microorganisms) and ghosts (hallucinations) resulting in pretty bad stuff happening.
