A while ago I played a Louisiana Voodoo practitioner in Mage: the Ascension and it was such a fantastic experience to learn more about the magic and the religion, especially seeing just how strong the parallels are with Christian miracle working, especially with its focus on community feasts, music, and dance. I developed a Correspondence 1 + Matter 1 spell that allows me to basically drive completely absent-minded, and calling it "Legba take the wheel" works perfectly well in translating its meaning. Theologically speaking, protestant Christianity of course very deliberately focuses the worship of God over the worship of Saints, and Christianity in general views possession very negatively, which the various Voodoo practices are much more nuanced on. As an interesting side effect of this (it is presumed) people diagnosed with schizophrenia from sub-saharan Africa generally experience "the voices" as a neutral mix, whereas Europeans experience them as overwhelmingly negative.

Great video! If anyone is interested in hearing some more about The Sudbury Devil, I just released a review on my channel. I didn't end up getting too deep into the social associations with witchcraft as this video does (had to cut a lot of analysis out of my video for time, probably gonna do a follow-up video covering it later lol), but it was definitely something I noticed in the film; Witchcraft in the Early Modern Puritan context was so deeply rooted in fears about "others" and ideas about subverting the established social order with regards to religious morals and gender and race relations. Super interesting topic!

Keep in mind also that there is good Voodoo. The culture surrounding voodoo was demonized by slave owners, but important to the slaves for things like healing and medicine. Disney even represents that there can be good Voodoo with Mama Odie, a healing shamanistic woman, but a Voodoo witch nonetheless.

Or see it as primeval barbarism or primordial unrefined powers at the edges of being extinguished by a new order that is a bit more palatable. Having the priest pray for the damnation of the enemy versus the shaman sacrificing the young to curse the foe. Easy ,powerful but simple and very wasteful of old evil versus complicated, less raw power and hard to make but not wasteful for the new good side(less bloody).

One point I would like to make, and it is contentious, some would even say I'm on a high horse. But as a practitioner of sedir and a worshiper of the old Norse gods, intention I feel is often over blown in modern witchCRAFT. The craft and practice is often forgotten or glossed over. For instance there is a tale of a young boy who didn't know what he was doing with the runes and wanted to speak to his dead relative, he accidently brought forth a blight of draugr and wiped out his whole town. I would argue that to properly perform any kind of magic or ritual craft that the practice and acts involved are more important overall then intention. While intention is vital for aiming and directing the flow of energy, I see intention as more of a scope persay and the actual ritual, spell, or ingredients that you must follow as the weapon itself.

I have an idea, not exactly dark (especially for how this magic system already worked) and I may just not use it or use it fully but, one must use symbols of their own and write it in their blood then, put their intentions into such script and destroy it using the power they already possessed. Also I do hate the idea of a specific language being used for magic or only certain ruins are needed for magic but I think it may be more interesting if ever person, family, or cultural must make their own language for magic, with the intentions going into it changing it's function.

Very nice video, but there is a little something I'd like to add to your original precis of "magical intention." For most "real" magical systems, it is a fundamental assumption that thoughts are real things, as real as stones and bricks. The New Agey callout to this is that you make a "thoughtform," a deliberately crafted thought which being a real thing can have effects in the real world, because well it's a real thing like poop and blood and soda pop. This mostly goes along with your take, but there is one important warning you will often see: If you seek to do black magic, to do harm, you are creating a harmful, negative thoughtform. Now while you have some control over this because you're creating it, you better be sure your control is good because ultimately the thing closest to this harmful negative thoughtform is YOU. The trick with black magic isn't doing harm, it's doing harm to the object of your intention without getting the harm done to yourself first because that's always easier and more direct. Vodun with its dolls and curses is especially specific about this, with little rituals like leaving dimes here and there and purification with incense to make sure the thoughtform you're creating goes out in the world to do its badness rather than coming back on you. And for those who have magical intent and think they might be targeted by such a thing, there are other rituals which don't try to counter the negative thoughtform -- after all, once it exists it's a thing that can't easily be destroyed -- but to counter the protections and send it back to its creator instead of letting it do its job on you. Wiccans formulated what they call the Law of Three, which says simply that any magic you do will affect you three times as much as it will affect someone else. Not a problem if you are trying to draw down blessings and healing forces, but not good if you want the spirits to torture and murder your enemy.
