The fact that girls are skin lightening breaks my heart as a dark skin girlie. Thank you for your vulnerability as always, queen! It helps more than you know! Also I cannot wait until I have your book in my hands! I can already tell that’s going to help me on my self-love journey too.

The part about friends was so relatable. I'm 22, but I feel like I'm more of a conversational friend than a hang-out type of friend because I am ambivert (but introvert-leaning), I'm not a nightlife person cause I don't like drinking and I also do not like commuting by myself at night. I feel like Iike I would like hanging out more if people made earlier plans and wanted more out-of-the-ordinary experiences than just drinking or eating at restaurants.

I think my mother thought she would protect me from getting hurt by telling me being brown was not attractive to people outside of my country. So when I traveled and lived abroad I had that mindset for the longest time and whatever rejection or lack of attention I experienced, I related it to the fact me being me and having my looks and skin color was the cause. And It was heartbreaking. I Wanted to be someone else. I wished I was prettier in a DIFFERENT SENSE. But that was cause of that early conditioning. But what if I changed my mindset and viewpoint about myself right? I love the way you expanded on the self love in this video Elicia. Thank you for the wonderful reminders.

In my country there are vaginal whitening creams. Which are so so dangerous. My gynae told me to not even use soap down there everyday, just warm water. Think how much harm those creams will do. 😢😢. In education psychology we learn that the things that get ingrained in us due to primary socialization (home and immediate social circle) can be very difficult to overcome even with secondary socialization ( school, college, job, external society). It is very much necessary to create healthy home environment. Most of the time body /outer appearance shaming starts from home, either by parents or relatives (when our parents do not stop them or counter them)

You’re so right!!! It’s so sad 😞 I’m glad you’re learning this in school! All we can do is use our voices and uplift not only ourselves but those around us that might need it. 🙏🏼🤍

Love this video! Can really relate as a mixed race woman. I was out the other night and so many people gave me compliments about my natural curly hair😊 Social media trends have really messed with many womens' self esteem and before social media it was society 'norms'.

With bleaching, it is sometimes more than intrinsic self hate, it is also that most societies treat you better the lighter you are, and they want to pass. I just wanted to add that because there is so much nuance with colorism that is systemic, that it's important to point out that it's not just waking up and hating being black or brown, it is avoiding the real consequences of being black or brown in the world.
@eliciagoguen8 ай бұрын
No of course! As I mentioned, it’s connected to literal survival. If you’re taught that the lighter you are, you will pass then that essentially = survival in life! And again as I mentioned this topic is MUCH deeper than what meets the eye, as per your example of how it’s not just about “waking up deciding”.

Out of curiosity, what do you think about women who go tanning? Do you think this is a different ball game than skin ligjtening? I go tanning because well...i prefer how I look when my skin is a bit darker 🤷♀️ Genuine question, I dont know much about skin lightening.
