Hey everyone! Welcome back to the homestead. Today, I’m sharing a quick and simple guide on how to start your very own sourdough starter from scratch. If you’ve ever wanted to bake delicious homemade sourdough bread, this is the first and most important step! In just a few minutes, I’ll walk you through the process and share some essential tips to make sure your starter is successful. 🥖✨
Starting a sourdough starter can feel intimidating, but it’s actually super easy once you know what to do. The key to success is following a few important steps. First, make sure to use a scale-this ensures that you’re getting the correct 1:1 ratio of flour and water. I also like to sterilize my jar using Starsan, a food-safe sanitizer, to make sure everything stays clean. I keep my starter on top of the fridge, which keeps it warm, and I use a fork to stir so it doesn’t clump up.
To get started, I add 100 grams of flour and 100 grams of water to the jar, and mix it well using a fork. Then, I cover the jar with a breathable lid. I didn’t have a coffee filter or cheesecloth on hand, so I used a mesh bag, but you can use whatever breathable material you have. The starter will need to be fed daily, and for the first three days, I’ll add another 100 grams of flour and 100 grams of water. After that, I’ll switch the feeding amounts, but I’ll cover that in more detail in another video.
If you’re ready to start your sourdough journey, this video is the perfect place to begin! It’s a quick and easy way to get your starter going, and with a little patience, you’ll be baking homemade sourdough bread in no time.
