I am in a metric country, I use 32 by 32centimeters, a touch bigger than 12 inches. Concrete edges so I use a cardboard template, it works.

Thanks for sharing. This will be my first time gardening (seeded 18 plants, 7 days ago), so I’m super new. My question is regarding the wood for your raised bed. Is it treated, if so or not, can you provide any guidance on what is safe in your opinion regarding the type of wood you use? Thanks!

You can grow tomatoes 🍅 in a 6inches of soil. I've done it. Read Mel Bartholomew books and you will see.

If I can't grow into the ground below should I use a liner before putting my soil in the bed?

My best bed this year is one I dug out about 1-1.5ft and filled to the bottom of the bed with wood and bark then filled the bed with soil this will compost over time and holds a lot of water if you live in a dry area it helps a ton. A liner before the soil is nice for weed control and soil retention though. The wood trick is called Hugelkultur if you want to look it up, I'd like to try a liner on a hugelkultur bed next year and see what happens.

@@thirtythreeeyes8624 thanks for the helpful response! We like the hugelkultur method also, one of our gardeners did a video on it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqWYhYGQbbOkm68 😁

Hi Sharon, you can absolutely put some landscape fabric down under where your garden bed will be, like Thirtythree Eyes said it can be good for weed control. If you have critters that like to dig up from the bottom to eat your plants adding in some chicken wire before the landscape fabric can help keep them out of your garden beds too. This may be a helpful video to check out, it talks about the mistakes to avoid when setting up a raised bed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGfQoqFjgsyXp9U 😊

This reads a lot more negativity than I meant. Sorry, because there is a lot of good information here. Would like to see a garden progress video?

You're not wrong though, for example,, I believe it takes less water because you're not watering a large area, much of which is just growing weeds. In the book its like a cup of water a day per plant "square" but it's lovely and your going to really enjoy this method.
