A new PT-6 engine can cost in excess of $300,000. I work for a shop where we repair them. Once we had a jack fail and drop one. Largely unscathed spare for what's called the 'chip detector' on the forward underside, it still cost us $150,000 to have it sent to Pratt & Whitney to have it inspected and recertified!

According to Wikipedia most of the variants of PT6 are between 500 and 1500 horsepower. I imagine that the price they charge is partly a function of how much power the particular variant puts out.

Ok so am I right in saying (on the ground) you can only start one side from scratch? Which you need to then start the other! Or is the process reversible?
@EvanLuft2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Almost always you start the one on the battery and the use the running one to start the 2nd engine. It is impractical to use a cart start every time. A good battery and alerting the engine spool up to around 18 to 21 % before introducing fuel won’t cause any harm at all. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen someone cart start a pt6 in almost 15 years of flying. Usually due to a bad battery or something :) :)
@recycledsteel36932 жыл бұрын
@@EvanLuft So are you saying it is not possible to start the other way? I know nothing of flying but find it interesting. If this is correct is it because the second engine lacks the hardware to do so? If yes is this to reduce weight? Or is it just practice to start one from battery and the second from electricity generated by the first? Could you start both from battery (even if bad practice)?

Thanks for the video, but can you post a step by step walkthrough on how to turn it off? Apparently it’s a “safety hazard” to leave it running. We just ignored it for a couple months but it inevitably started racking up fuel costs and my boss doesn’t like that. Update: My co-pilot tried turning it off, the idiot just made it go faster. Update: Can you please post a walkthrough about how to turn it off? I guess it’s spinning fast enough now that it’s moving the plane. We’re just letting it roll around in circles on the tarmac but it’s getting really annoying. Update: It killed a guy. Ground crew? More like ground beef🤣!! Anyway, you can stop making that update, the cops turned it off. Update: You know what, I probably shouldn’t have kept refueling it. That just seems like a no brainer
