WOW!! Great ideas! I started reading about "Junk Journals" last night, cuz I only 1st heard about them last night, and I watched SO many KZbin videos. But I kept thinking if I could just use an old book hardcover and just REMOVE bunch of pages, it would be good idea. I've seen some people just use the hardcover binder & completely remove all pages from book. I had several ideas, but wasn't sure what was best way. You did just what I was thinking about. THANK YOU for showing how to do it, and what to watch out for. I'm VERY exacting (I'm an accountant and an engineer!) and I'm SO GLAD you are very detail oriented. Awesome job on the project & the video. THANK YOU, Barbara - Austin, TX

barbara Cabrera an altered book journal is a great way to start. I felt overwhelmed with thinking I needed to create a book from scratch. This is perfect for getting the hang of it and also recycling old books. Thanks for watching!

I am JUST beginning this craft! And I love it! I have watched many many videos with still so much confusion in the end…. But this video helped me so much. I have been collecting ‘junk’- although I have so much scrapbooking supplies/ to me I still need other things. Anyway I watched this at the same time I was tearing out pages!! Sounds silly but I have stressed over the fact that I just wasn’t‘getting it’- I think I have now. This is what I mean by just beginning- maybe I have mastered the old/ no longer wanted book for a journal! Thanks❤️❤️

I did the same thing when I started. I started with an old Readers' Digest and did an altered book. I still use it for some of the ideas in it and add ideas to the pockets. As I look back on it, I can't believe how much I have learned and my style has changed.

I’m having the same problem! As a newbie, I also decided an altered book seemed to be the logical way to get started! TFS

I’m stuck making an altered book journal! Why?! ! It’s an antique 1800s Japanese poetry book! I know you’re screaming don’t do it! But It has the authors original artwork & vintage photos on glossy paper and even the antique delicate onion skin paper used to protect her photos! It also has an ornate brightly colored stamp glued in the intro. Not to mention, it’s obviously written in Japanese. I bought it for that very reason. I will glue more than 2 pages together because the pages are delicate. I will lightly gesso over the writing so I can still see it. The artwork and photos are included ephemera. I’ll also glue silk between pages to give a delicate fabric interest. The pages I remove... they’re just lovely! I found a note inside the book. Evidently the book was a Princess. I wish I could read Japanese. I just hope it’s not worth more than I paid and I’m destroying something of considerable value.

Thank you for this tutoria!. Gina at the ReBookery linked your video in her recent series on altered books and I'm so glad she did! This is one of the clearest and best explanations I've watched on how to alter a book. I have watched the other tutorials you mentioned, but this time it clicked. I tried altering a book some months ago and became very confused. Now I'm ready to tackle a new altered book project with confidence (and finish the one I started). Off to watch Part 2! :-) ~Marci

QUESTION: So am I correct that you tear out 6 pgs for every 2 pages kept? So you end up removing 3/4 of the pages???
@fabcraftsandmore4 жыл бұрын
barbara Cabrera yes! You tear out pages to make room for your embellishments. Make sure to go watch part 2!

I have a old heavy book I will like to altere , but what happen if I no remove any pages and only cover the contenen with and other paper? The book is around 1000 pages . And also I have other is 800
@AndreaCrisp4 жыл бұрын
If you plan to embellish your altered book then removing some pages makes it easier to keep the book closed within a similar footprint as originally intended. Adding stuff like pockets photos, tags etc. will take up space. If you don't remove pages and still add to it then the book will eventually get super thick, fan out and not close. If you don't mind, then you can move forward without taking out pages. Personal preference. But making one really over stuffed will be harder physically on the book binding etc. and affect the integrity of the spine over time. Hope that makes sense!

Your "Go here for Part 2" doesn't work.
@steveelkins524 жыл бұрын
That was as clear as mud. I don't get how you decide how many pages to remove, do you use a knife, no tear them, leave a bit but remove a bit then glue them no wait, glue these instead, let's just pat the friggin pages
