Nine times out of ten, it's a famous work or the topic of discussion, so in those cases it's not necessary. That tenth time, just type a physical description of the main character into Google, find the closest match in Images, and follow that back to the series wiki that probably exists. Edit: Also, just commenting "What anime is this" with a timestamp should also get an answer. It is bad form not to label the more obscure series, but the fact that few people mention it shows that many don't have a problem with it.

@Normal Playz Read SAO Progressive if you want. Kawahara has refined the story to the point where you can actually ignore Kirito being overpowered as every other character is really important. From Asuna finally being given a backstory (a sad one at that) to an actual enemy (not just the game itself or the creator) that Kirito will have to end up fighting being prevalent yet mysterious, this series does everything that the original SAO needed. The 'enemy' that I just mentioned has one of the best reveals I've seen for an antagonist so far as it makes you question everything about them and, even when given few answers, leaves you wanting more. Seriously though, if you want to see SAO's potential finally being used, read the Progressive novels. Or just watch the Abridged version online on KZbin.

Depends on what you mean by "good" . It's good as in, it's gripping and it makes the audience largely hooked. It's not really "good" in a context of the series, it is decietful, a lot of it does not make sense later on, and establishes characters who just peter out as the series goes on.
@TheFrostedfirefly7 жыл бұрын
Well if you were watching the series as it aired, you'd only have that episode to judge. It isn't "decietful" because a show doesn't intentionally try to make you think that the rest of it will be when it was shite. They clearly thought the rest of the show would be amazing but it wasn't. The topic is first episodes as first episodes, and the first episode of SAO did a good job on what it was supposed to do and honestly, nothing can change that. Not the next episode, not the 3rd episode or anything stretching beyond that. The series is bad but that comes after an equation of what adds up in it's duration, including the first episode. However, the equation of the series does not equal the end result of the first episode. It stands alone in that ranking.
@bloodmachine60497 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with you there. I merely wanted to explain that "good" can be understood from several angles. The SAO one absolutely does what it's supposed to, and very well at that.

Episodes 1-26 were amazing, but after L died, I kind of felt like I was watching something completely different. The way everything has to be ham-stringed into a victory with justice contradicts the show, but at the same time it's a problem I've had on multiple occasions, like when you realize you've written a character with clinical depression in a world without any means of fixing clinical depression, or when you turn down the power level on your cast but forget to change the villain's strength in compensation and end up writing something that can't actually play out. Light is so good at it that seeing him fail is less satisfying and believable than seeing L fail, because Light has all of the pieces to the puzzle while L and Neer are working with only half of them.

I'd argue Saitama's "Oh shit" moment was waking up from his dream. We saw him one-shot vaccine man, and the giant dude, which makes it seem like he's too powerful and he's bored and a bit depressed by it. But then, the invasion comes. And with the first watch through, you've got no idea it's actually a dream. All at once it seems like a bunch of really strong villains are flooding in and this guy whose been depressed about no fulfillment is suddenly going to find it in this horrible future. The invasion of the Subterraneans actually seems like the -oh shit- moment. And you don't get just HOW truly sad and depressed he was, until you see how elated he is at basically the end of the world. It's not his fault, so we don't feel disgusted or anything at Saitama being excited. Quite the opposite. The world really needs a hero, and he really wants to be one, and he's strong enough to get the job done, and we're happy he exists. We see him in a state of absolute elation and fulfillment and happiness and kicking ass 8 ways to Sunday. It's not just everything HE wants in his life. It's everything WE want, for him and ourselves, in his show. And then he wakes up. That's the -oh shit- moment. That's when the show says: "No, the world isn't going to come under attack by thousands of strong villains that will push Saitama to his limits." Villains are just too weak compared to Saitama, and there's no getting around that. And suddenly you feel exactly the same way Saitama does. He's depressed because he really wants an intense fight, and he knows he'll never get that. And now you're depressed because you saw this character you really like super happy and kicking ass and everything you want to see from a show - and now the shows made clear that YOU'LL never get that. And that all happens in the span of time it takes to shut off an alarm.
@kylefreeburg93537 жыл бұрын
The last episode has the same kind of thing, you think he's gonna have one final battle that will push his limits and finally give him joy, and then it's just take away from him in a few minutes, it's actually really sad, and a good comparison to the boringness of a reality that doesn't have mole monsters or space emperors for heroes to fight

I really liked the first episode of Jojo for phantom blood, because it shows us the rivalry and the relationship between Jonathan and Dio, and got me interested on whats going to happen in the future.
@joelman19896 жыл бұрын
You know, I've always thought that a great first episode is vital to TV and anime in particular. And the 1 thing I noticed early on is that a good first episode should give you an expectation of what is to come. A weak first episode assumes that you will stick around and care, but a good first episode gives you a taste of the entire series in one episode. Will this be a show with lots of hooks? Give us a hook in the first episode. Will this be a show where the main character triumphs as an underdog? Give us a small taste of our main character triumphing over something, even if it's small. A good first episode gives us a taste of what we will experience throughout the series by creating a condenced story arc that gives us a smaller version of that.

Agreed. Probably the last thing I expected from the anime was an Uta no Prince-sama parody 5 minutes in. 10 minutes in and my sides were gone. Kinda wish they could do something similar for season 2 but they'll probably hold back since the 1st episode got banned. Hoping S2 is 2-cour again.

one of the reasons why avatar the last airbender starts off so good its because you really dont know how good the start is until later, sure it can pull in some people with its awesomeness, but the first time i saw it i thought it was very childish but once i let myself go through the first couple of episodes then everything made sense, even the fact that i saw this show as having a childish start worked well for itself because everything aang and everyone end up doing by the end of the series makes them all look far more mature and epic, and the more and more you analyze ATLA the more and more it makes sense to have the first couple of episodes start the way they did (i still to this day believe avatar the last airbender is one of the best animated shows in existence due to its brilliant pacing and build up all the way until the last episode, its also one of those show that has such an amazing universe to back it up you end up wishing you could be part of it somehow)

Someone needs to cut together the good parts of FMA and FMAB, because FMAB is the technically "complete" series, but canon parts such as youswell (have no idea if I spelled that right) and the train scene aren't present, the first episode of FMAB is terrible (it just exists as foreshadowing and introducing characters), and the parts covered in both FMA and FMAB are generally better in FMA

I wish more people knew about it!

As much as I love FMAB (which is a lot, seeing as it's my #1 favorite anime,) the first episode is honestly subpar to the rest and you can easily skip it and get just as much out of the second episode besides some really heavy foreshadowing that you wouldn't even get unless you already read the manga or have already finished the series. Honestly, Brotherhood's first episode makes the rest of the show kinda look bad, since it's just a really cheesy intro to a bunch of key characters. It's easy enough to skip and be fine later down the line (especially since the events of first episode was never part of the manga).
@TheAntiSanta7 жыл бұрын
The first episode of Brotherhood sets up the Elric Brothers as characters, and then we get to see them get set up again as characters, as they do the fucking Father Cornello arc right after, basically scene for seen, page for page, even though that Arc's only really purpose is to introduce the Elric Brothers (something it doesn't do so well, because Edward spends the majority of it talking about how Awesome he is for not believing in any god, a character trait he doesn't have in any later arcs, you'd think someone that constantly complains about Religion to a bunch of Religious people that have done him no harm, would have a lot of nasty things to say to Scar, a man literally trying to murder him).

Naw. The first episode honestly isn't that good compared to how 2003 and the manga started. I mean like the first 14 something episodes of brotherhood honestly weren't that good compare to the manga/2003. I know they had to rush it to get to the new material but it still doesn't really change the quality. There alright episodes if you haven't seen 2003 or manga but I just think those series handled it so much but. Brotherhood is still my favorite anime though so I don't care.

@Lirus9Star7 жыл бұрын

The difference is that Digi's video was based on the concept of how he knows a series will suck or be great without much exception despite how little sense that claim made and despite how dumb it was that 1/3 of his examples didn't even play into the true problems of the show, just nitpicks that are never a problem again. Meanwhile, in Geoff's video, it's not about pretentiously making such a grand claim, it's just about what makes for a first episode that can draw in views and how different shows make first episodes interesting and engaging. Which might not sound like much, but it's a much better way to look at things overall since it acknowledges the flaws of basing things on the first episode while still showing how it can be a useful measuring stick instead of just using it as a measuring stick and ignoring pretty much everything else as an exception to the norm.
