I am converting the Gilmore Girls Jeep to electric - in my garage! Having thought about it myself, I think the safest and soundest way of going about this project is with a central motor in place of the original ICE. Keeping as much of the original driveline is what will still make it a "true jeep" (Solid axle, Dana differential, transfer case). However, if it were mine, I would keep the transmission. This would allow you to play around with the gear ratio to your liking. Let's be real, Jeeps are all about options and modularity. Getting rid of the stick shift would make it loose some of its identity. But that is just me. I get the rationale of your decision.

@@felix-antoinelebel755 Yep, totally get it about the "true jeep" aspects 😊 or let's say we expected that. We are obviously note "real Jeep people" but we still want to make it appealing for those who are. For the transmission, we were going back and forth but all at a sudden, it was out 😂 I guess for the next conversion, we want to keep the transmission and see which options we have then. They, say, your first conversion is never a perfect one, so we learn as much as we can from this one 😊

Wheel motors are a dumb idea for something like a car- unsprung weight, failure modes, cost, environmental conditions the motors have to endure etc. all point away from this approach. You've settled on a good one and if you don't need to trade speed for torque (frequently the issue), you don't need the transmission. I kept mine because my motor topped out at only 6,000 rpm, and the transmission gives you options- you can have fun at every stopsign (and @Electrfied Veronica, you WILL have fun at every stopsign I guarantee you!) and still set a highway gear ratio that puts your motor/inverter combination right at its efficiency sweet-spot for best highway range. Of course I had only 2wd to worry about so yours is harder! Best of luck - you're going to have a really fun vehicle when you're done. And stock up on aspirin- you're going to encounter what other converters have called the "EV grin"- your face will be sore from smiling every time you step on the "gas" pedal!

Well, yes we maybe are not really the type for in-wheel motors..so I am happy with our choice. We will definitely keep everybody updated about the consequences of removing the transmission. And yes, I CAN'T WAIT to drive the Jeep and have all these great moments. Especially can't wait to pull up in front of a charging station and see surprised faces 😂😂

Convert an EV first haha. Average IQ ppl always reason based on analogy alone. Instead of being logical about it. In engeenering their is no one size that fits all. There's a reason EV automotive companies are Investing into developing wide array of electric motors. *Leave it to the professionals.

I will definitely be following this project, I've been throwing this idea around in my head for some time, I've owned my 93 wrangler for 10+ years now, and the more i think about it, once the engine is toast, which as expensive as rebuilds are, and new crate motors, it wouldn't cost much more to take the plunge and go electric. I'd be keeping most of the driveline(trans, t-case, solid axles). With as little as i drive my jeep, converting it to electric would be perfect. Especially if i can still get a full day of fun in the mud on a single charge.

I think hub motors are a great way to go - if the hubs are a huge diameter, specially designed for the purpose. Tesla’s choice to even use differentials surprised me, I always thought a ‘software diff’ would be implemented, with a motor for each wheel…but, they had to get to market of course, and software development is often under-rated in terms of difficulty. It is generally accepted, the British successful businessman Dyson, ran aground on this very aspect, having sunk hundreds of millions into a car design, only to realise, manufacturing and software would wipe him out. So, the ‘brain’ of your car will be interesting. I like the presentation very much Dr Veronika - no man would dare to mention the fact he had to buy loads of tools he didn’t imagine he’d need, etc. I literally, have tools I bought for one single task, and never in 20 years had another use for’em. Think i would keep the transmission. but a lot depends on your choice of motor and the expected completed weight of the finished jeep.

We thought about it a lot...but in the end we were finding it would just be left in 3rd gear so we decided to ditch it and use the weight savings for batteries.

I'm trying to do an EV conversion on a Jeep Wrangler too. Would the NetGain Hyper9H 144V motor be good enough?

Maybe a setup with a direct coupling from the motor to the transfer case. That would give you 4X4 when you want it and allow you a single motor configuration. I am looking for a vehicle to do this to now and I am also in the Milwaukee area.

I will go with a dc system , 1 or 2 motor, 1 or 2 motor controller ,1 battery pack. Have fun ( I designed treadmills 35 years ago just like an EV )

I have a much simpler project - but still need advice - I just want to add more battery capacity to my plugin hybrid - so that rather than getting 30 km on battery I get at least 100 - this will mean 95% of my driving would be all electric - would love some advice on how to tackle this??!!

This might be more complicated than what I do, because you have to integrate with all the existing BMS and engine management system. So the communication part might be tricky but I don't have too much experience there. It all depends on the operation strategy of the hybrid controller. If you can figure that out (maybe it's easy to do) you could make it work. Sorry, I don't have more insights / better advice.

Just knowing that it looks complicated to you is helpful to know - my guess is it would take a long time and cost a fair bit of money to figure it out - If there were a huge number of these cars out there, that might make sense - others could reapply the solution- I don’t think that’s the case though.

Why would anyone do something so stupid. Hydrogen is much better then electric. Your building a limited car that is good for 10 years or less. I want a car I don't have to worry about what I wanna use it for. Imagine I have a car but it only goes so far or I need a gas generator. Shame to see a jeep converted into junk.

Why is hydrogen a better alternative? Are you talking about hydrogen as fuel for an engine or fuel cell electric vehicles?

@@ElectrifiedVeronika better mileage also hydrogen when made can also make fertilizer and the plants can remove waste. Hydrogen is very safe when tested because it’s lighter then air. So the old theory that it’s explosive has been debunked by not having tanks underground. You can research the test done by Japanese. The biggest reason is batteries only last a short time. They are very dangerous extremely. Batteries are bad for the environment they claim to be protecting. When a electric car has battery problems the car can cost a fortune to replace. A hydrogen car has a regular motor then a electric motor like a ship or a train. Best design ever. Just look at Japanese new designs. I’m a mechanic a diesel mechanic with more the 30years experience from a family of machinists and mechanics. I’m not claiming to be a engineer but I know how to make things work. I’ve worked on everything from equipment to boats. If you would like I can like designs and demos of hydrogen. The government gave out money to spread hydrogen then it stopped for some reason. I’m not going to get political but look that up as well.
