Nice to see guys like this doing kit conversions for cars in a way that doesn't require cutting up the car to do it. Makes it easier for people to do on their own car in their home/garage, and for small businesses that restore old/classic cars so they can concentrate on the body and aesthetics of the car and be able to just drop in an electric drivetrain. Helps preserve not only the looks and functions of the car but also leaves the safety features of the car in place without having to cut into and affecting crumple zones, and not having to add a bunch of braces welded in to keep the car from falling apart because of modifications done to the chassis.

Great job on the MX5 but... I owned an MX5 for a few years and loved driving it and the best part was hitting the gear changes on the bends and corners. As far as I am concerned that is an essential part of the fun. It would be perfect if it had the gears
@callummunro54004 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was thinking something similar. It’s not actually any faster, it’s a bit heavier, doesn’t go as far and misses some driver involvement. So why would you do it?
@questioner15964 жыл бұрын
Many older EV conversions kept the original transmissions, but that would keep weight higher and destroy their excellent packaging and balance. Plus, the transmission is kind of silly when the motor has such a broad torque curve and big rpm spread. You also no longer need a clutch pedal, because there is so little rotational mass, letting off the go pedal during shifts is enough.
@questioner15964 жыл бұрын
@Rubedo Alaberti, I do prefer manual transmissions in my internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, that wasn't my point. When converting a car to EV, some builders keep the manual transmission, but remove the clutch pedal. The electric motor doesn't need to idle at a stop, and there is less rotational mass so pressing the clutch on shifts is also not needed. Shifting gears is also not often beneficial because of the electric motor's wide torque curve. My point is that keeping a manual transmission in an electric conversion loses some of the fun of a manual paired to an ICE.
@marcob17294 жыл бұрын
@@callummunro5400 well I'd do it to get a commuter car that I barely pay to upkeep or "fuel" up, still fun to drive, and costs less than a new car. All the electronics including BMS, j1772 charging and instruments were designed by me, because they were not readily available back then. When people stopped using horses for transport, & started using them just to have fun, a lot of people discovered how much fun cars & motorbikes were, & gave up bothering with horses at all. Love this I have a Miata I was gifted and did some small mods on. Its been sitting and I was torn between it building a sleeper with an LS6 or doing EV. I was curious what would need to happen to develop a solar collecting hood to give it passive recharging. Like if you developed a hood that would inset the panels and maybe same on trunk.

It's been a great project to watch. Good to see a bigger battery is available. Looks like a locking diff needed too!!!

Blown 944 for me. But the RX-8 is a great choice. Except maybe for rust issues.

There's already a guy on a KZbin who's DIYing an RX8 EV conversion with crashed Nissan Leaf cells

More quality content from Jonny! I used to be sad you left fully charged. Haven’t felt way in a long while now 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
