I’m an avionics engineer (on the Typhoon jet) and actually learnt more about ev tech in this one video than I’ve learnt in the hundred other videos I’ve seen! So thanks, can we have more from Zero EV in the future? Perhaps a build of the Figaro?

Nice to see guys like this doing kit conversions for cars in a way that doesn't require cutting up the car to do it. Makes it easier for people to do on their own car in their home/garage, and for small businesses that restore old/classic cars so they can concentrate on the body and aesthetics of the car and be able to just drop in an electric drivetrain. Helps preserve not only the looks and functions of the car but also leaves the safety features of the car in place without having to cut into and affecting crumple zones, and not having to add a bunch of braces welded in to keep the car from falling apart because of modifications done to the chassis.

Great job on the MX5 but... I owned an MX5 for a few years and loved driving it and the best part was hitting the gear changes on the bends and corners. As far as I am concerned that is an essential part of the fun. It would be perfect if it had the gears

@callummunro5400 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was thinking something similar. It’s not actually any faster, it’s a bit heavier, doesn’t go as far and misses some driver involvement. So why would you do it?
@questioner1596
@questioner1596 4 жыл бұрын
Many older EV conversions kept the original transmissions, but that would keep weight higher and destroy their excellent packaging and balance. Plus, the transmission is kind of silly when the motor has such a broad torque curve and big rpm spread. You also no longer need a clutch pedal, because there is so little rotational mass, letting off the go pedal during shifts is enough.
@questioner1596
@questioner1596 4 жыл бұрын
@Rubedo Alaberti, I do prefer manual transmissions in my internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, that wasn't my point. When converting a car to EV, some builders keep the manual transmission, but remove the clutch pedal. The electric motor doesn't need to idle at a stop, and there is less rotational mass so pressing the clutch on shifts is also not needed. Shifting gears is also not often beneficial because of the electric motor's wide torque curve. My point is that keeping a manual transmission in an electric conversion loses some of the fun of a manual paired to an ICE.

@@callummunro5400 well I'd do it to get a commuter car that I barely pay to upkeep or "fuel" up, still fun to drive, and costs less than a new car. I could drive an MX-5 convertible or get a used weird box thing that BMW made for about the same price and range. The convertible seems like a solid choice!

Very good video and I am very impressed with zero ev. Its good to see the advance in ev conversions. I have an MX5 that was converted in 2008 using an Azure motor and Inverter. I have improved it over time. It started with a 214v 19kwhr battery pack capable of driving its ac motor at 40kw. It now has a 400v 32kwhr battery driving the same motor at 70kw. All the electronics including BMS, j1772 charging and instruments were designed by me, because they were not readily available back then. I still have the gearbox and use 1st 2nd and 3rd without a clutch. Unfortunately Azure went bust around 2012, but I have driven over 120000km and still take it out for a spin weekly.

The move to modern cars with EV is the future. The sooner they come out with a bolt in EV for regular cars the better.

nice conversion... here in California I like to drive my 1997 Miata(MX5) to the coast and back and thats over 300 miles round trip for me and I'm used to being able to go a bit faster....so it's not quite there yet.... but as tech advances (mostly lighter and greater energy density batteries are needed I suspect), the day of an electric Miata that matches the original is getting near... good work

Beautifully clean conversion. Amazing you were able to keep original weight distribution. I hope in the future they can get pack voltage higher to enable DCFC and a bit more motor power, too, I’m guessing, but I understand too much would make the car too different than the original design intent.

@@harrykeane1380 Seriously, why? Nobody buys an MX-5 for the 'amazing character' of the rather uninspiring generic 4-pot engine. Electric motive power is potentially far more exciting - a perfectly flat monster torque curve that starts at zero rpm? Jay Leno reckons that electric cars will mean we get to keep our V8s to take out for a spin on a couple of fine sunny days a year. When people stopped using horses for transport, & started using them just to have fun, a lot of people discovered how much fun cars & motorbikes were, & gave up bothering with horses at all. A lot, but not everybody. An electric car that can do the whole 'wind in your hair' thing, & which handles exactly like a stock MX-5, is surely just what the doctor ordered for pollution saturated urban areas, & the polar bears will thank you as well.

Love this I have a Miata I was gifted and did some small mods on. Its been sitting and I was torn between it building a sleeper with an LS6 or doing EV. I was curious what would need to happen to develop a solar collecting hood to give it passive recharging. Like if you developed a hood that would inset the panels and maybe same on trunk.
