Nothing better than the sound and smell of an older 2 smoker!

Ppl can say what they want about them, but an old trusty 2 stroke still sounds so good to me

I always use a fuel stabilizer (Quicksilver), never go beyond a couple of months (Winter!) without running it, and keep check on the muffs when running as they are notorious about coming off. Love the old 2 strokes!

I grew up running 2 stroke outboards with oldheads who used to water ski in the 70's, and my boat has a 1988 65 yamaha, just squeeze till the buld gets stiff, then do 3 more complete squeezes and she starts up first time

Appreciate these videos. I just acquired a 2002 20 foot CC mated to a 2002 Mercury 115 HP carburetor 2-stroke with just over 400 hours. I know the mechanic who serviced the outboard which is why I purchased the boat and motor. He assured me the outboard has been well maintained and that the outboard has years of useful life so long as I maintain the engine. Agree with others commenting on the attributes of the 2-stroke; a well maintained 2-stroke is a thing of beauty. Thanks again for the helpful guidance on getting a 2-stroke started.

Bought a 20 year 2 stroke engine. I found this extremely helpful. So to choke you are pushing the key in. Then the next time you jist tuen the key. You do this when in neutral, correct? Have lot of questions but extremely helpful.

Hows that gonna work at a dock if you forget to start it once before you leave? Keep it on trailer and start it that way? Would be about the only way to do it i figure for a cold start needing throttle applied.

I have a 99 Johnson 225. Just took it to the mechanic and he said it still has a lot of life. They don't make them like they use to.

Zac Carrigan definitely I’ve had this outboard for about 2 years now and literally all I’ve done to it is fresh set of plugs and some lower unit oil!

Never had to pump the primer bulb that much, but mine is a V4, so not as much gas is needed to fill the carbs. I also, don't normally need to advance the throttle in neutral to get it to start.
@KevinToraya4 жыл бұрын
Jason Lefevers this is typically what I have to do to get mine to start if it’s not started in over a month and it’s also a v4 if I start it weekly I normally don’t have to accelerate it at all
@ryanith23 жыл бұрын
if you have a 2 stroke that starts cold at idle and doesnt die, even on muffs, much less in the water, you are very lucky. alot of them wouldnt start cold without coercion brand new.

I think these motors were the pinacle of carbed 2 strokes. They, along with the yamaha v4/v6 are some of the most reliable motors ever made. Just sharing my thoughts.

How were you giving it choke?

Pretty exact for me too. Johnson 115. But even after it’s warm, it tends to want the same process. Any advice?

Did you start that in gear (forward)? No separate throttle lever to do it in neutral?
@hollywoodbb3 ай бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but there’s a rectangular button next to the throttle you can see at 3:18. You press that when you first engage the throttle and it keeps it in neutral.

I have the year 2000 190 Fisherman version of this boat. Same style and engine. I kept getting water in the gas (many gallons) tank, even after emptying the tank. I wound up scoring a cylinder and had to rebuild it. I now use a portable tank but it's in the way..Do you know anything about the tank or how to replace it? I believe I must have a crack on top or up on the sides which lets rain water and wash water into the tank. The fuel fill areas and hose attachment areas do.not leak. Thanks.
@KevinToraya4 жыл бұрын
Bob Markey I haven’t had to replace my tank but but at the stern begging the seat or leaning post the lines you see that don’t have non skid in the serve as a guideline, you can cut along those lines to access and replace the tank then use the same portion of the floor to cover it up and reinforce the cuts with more fiberglass
@BobMarkey4 жыл бұрын
@@KevinToraya I see those indentations/seams behind the helmet seats which seem to show where the tank is, but it's a 50-gallon tank and it does not seem like it would fit only below that cut-out. I hope so. That would make a tank replacement relatively easy. I wish Wellcraft or anyone could provide drawings or data on this issue before I start cutting. I still do not understand from where the water is getting into the tank.

What should I do when start my Yamaha after sitting for 5 months? Fogging spray in cylinder what else?
@KevinToraya4 жыл бұрын
I would definitely pull the spark gulfs check gaps and make sure they’re clean, smell the gas to make sure it hasn’t started to go bad with that and a little ether if needed she should start up if nothing else is wrong also remember to check battery voltage and charge if necessary
@stayloose52575 жыл бұрын
How about after sitting for 3-4 hours? Sill pump ball and choke? I have same boat and motor (1995). Thanks. -J
@KevinToraya5 жыл бұрын
Stay Loose after 3-4 hours I’ll pump the ball and choke on the first crank only normally anything around 1-2 hours I can just crank it right up no pump or choke and it’ll start

I grew up on my dads old 1967 glass master boat with a 1967 80hp on it. Then I bought a 1996 Bayliner with a 1995 75hp Mariner motor package, new. In fact one of my boys took it this past summer, still running strong. I bought a 2020 stingray with a Suzuki 90hp on it new last year. I see on your boat that you took off your mechanical steering and replaced it with the hydraulic steering, was that very difficult? I have mechanical steering on mine, and I’m wanting to change it over to hydraulic steering and was wondering how difficult that would be?

Also, learn the little nuances about YOUR motor's preferences relating to choke, throttle position, idle RPM's, etc. when cold. Just repeat what works for you, including if and when you need to choke when restarting after a certain time off.
