Thank you for this, I started printing planes from plans I purchased online and then the bug bit me. I want to stared designing and creating my own plans from scratch. This is exactly what I needed. I'm hoping that I can design planes to scale and then cut them on a laser. If you can think of any shortcut like where to find already completed plans that I can just cut so I can try my laser before learning cad that would me great too. Thanks

XYZ origins for your lines layout is typically the theoretical apex at the nose, not to be confused with the actual tip of the radome. Also max extents or trailing edges are defined as theoretical vertices, not to be confused with manufacturing constrained limits of material boundaries. From these points all else is measured, calculated, analyzed etc. At least in the McDonnell Douglas and Boeing and Japanese world's. Not sure about Lockheed and Airbus, or the non-free world.

Thank you AJ for the kind comment! Yeah, many are shocked that I use a track pad. I switched many years ago from a mouse. My wrists would end up hurting badly after just a short while. It was tough switching, but now with all of the gestures built in, it's second nature to me.... A mouse feels strange now 😁 - thanks again for taking the time to leave a nice comment!

I did all my engineering school using a glass multitouch trackpad MacBook Pro. A mouse felt like a downgrade. Especially with native Mac CAD software that supports gestures.

Terrance, good morning, my name is Ronaldo, I'm from Brazil, I'm subscribed to your channel, could you help with a problem? I can't move the plane on my fusion 360, I don't know if it can be some configuration of the program, I'm watching your video part 2 of the construction of the L1011 Triestar. thank you so much
@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Ronaldo, this answer comes to you a bit late, but hopefully not lost. The reason for not being able to move your construction planes is because you are in Parametric Modeling Mode. You need to be in Direct Modeling Mode. To change right click on the Root Component in the Browser, and at the bottom turn of capture history. This will make that available to you. If you ever find yourself stuck in the future use my website as a reference. I post more details and answer common questions and problems there with each video. The link for each video is usually in the description. Hope that helps!

Hi Terrance, and thank you very much for the videos. I did not see a separate section to send you request on your website, so I will do it from this post as I think this where it fits best. You mention that you obtained three-views of your project from the Internet. If a person can not find proper views of a plane they would like to model from sketches, do you know of a way to put a sketch of a plane on a canvas from a .pdf file..?? This file would be from a set of plans. Possibly a way to import the entire .pdf into Fusion360 and work from there..?? What do you feel would work best..?? Take good care...stay safe. I enjoy your build of the L-1011. I flew it's cousin...the DC-10.

You would need to convert your PDF file into a PNG or JPG in order to bring it into Fusion 360. If you have access to Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop this conversion would take a minute to do.

Excellent video.. I do have a bone to pick with Autodesk (who make fusion 360), as at one time, they had a free version of fusion, which I liked, so used it to develop some work, over a years worth. My work at that time was saved in an account at Autodesk, without any easy way to save it locally. Autodesk decided to force users to pay for use, and in the process, my years work vanished. Since than, I discovered Design Spark, which is a later development from somebody else and has a free version, which has a much more common approach, thus making it much easier to learn, and saves locally in many different formats and is at least as solid as fusion as a program. I am just saying be careful with your time as in my case Autodesk could care less. They appear to have gone back to a free version, but that does nothing for me.

For decades I have been working more bad than right in 2D and have made countless attempts to learn the design in 3D. Today everyone prints in 3D or creates parts on portal mills ... and I want to be able to do that too. All my attempts with Rhino, Freecad or Turbocad always failed but with your channel I finally dare to hope. Getting started with Fusion 360 is not as hard as I thought, you explain absolutely great, your tutorials are perfect, exactly what I want to do and for the first time I'm making progress. It will take time, but finally I see a chance to design my childhood dream .. a C-119 Boxcar ... and that before my retirement ;-) Thank you so much for sharing your skills and I sincerely hope that you will produce many more videos like this.

Hi Lars! Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and generous comment! CAD can be a very challenging thing to learn. In the past I had given it several tries and also failed. For me, it took a while to grasp the concept of working on a two dimensional screen in 3 dimensions. I'm happy to hear that the way I laid things out in this video series has been the very thing you needed to get over the hurdles CAD can present! Cheers to that! The C-110 Boxcar looks like a beautiful aircraft! There is another fellow I know of who is also designing a twin boom military airplane. There are some interesting design challenges there, but you'll get it figured out ;) -- I've got many more videos in the pipeline, all the way to maiden flight.

@@RCCAD2VR Yes, that's it and designing in 3D is a hard topic to teach to oneself. You are really the first one who paves the way to this fascinating world in a step by step and understandable way. Now I'm sitting in front of my results of the last weeks with Fusion360 and can't believe I did it. :-D ok, but to be honest, I realized that it's better not to start with the most complex machine like a C-119 ... but my C-123 in 1:12 scale instead is already making very good progress so the C-119 out of the Film "The Flight of the Phoenix" from 1965 comes later ;-) The more I learn with your help, the more fun it is.I love it. @crashrr2993
@crashrr2993 4 жыл бұрын
@@RCCAD2VR It's only a 24" span rubber-powered job, but it took me two years - on and off - to finish due its complexity. I enlarged an old plan, which greatly exaggerated the inaccuracies. I only needed the outline but guesstimating the diameter and hand-drawing the circular laminated formers, so that the longerons ran perfectly true, took ages. One was 1mm out, so there is a 0.5mm kink in the fuselage at that point. It's almost invisible, but it looks like the Grand Canyon to me! I wanted to stretch myself, so I had already chosen the hardest colour scheme I could find - big rectangles that are symmetrical both left to right and top to bottom - which left nowhere to hide if the aircraft wasn't built perfectly symmetrical. It came out pretty well in the end but, oh boy, do I wish I had a CAD drawn plan to start with! I will definitely be putting my next build, an E.E. Lightning, onto Fusion360. At some point, I will make a video of the Mig15 when I have some flying footage, and post it on my channel. Many thanks, again. I can't wait for the next installment.

This is really, really amazing! I'm by no means a F 360 expert but I do know of a better way to build and extrude those fuselage formers/bulkheads. I traced out the sketch just like Terrence but I used the trim tool on the sketch to get rid of all the intersecting lines. After that you can select the whole shape without having to select each piece of the model to extrude it.

I'm interested in the topic of rc-plane design, and an experienced F360-user. Your use of existing drawings is excellent. Your way of adapting / editing & mirroring the vertical supports seems very UN-intuitive, over-complicated and slow. I wonder why you choose this process. Perhaps all will become clear. >> suggestion[s] 1. Make sure your timeline is turned on 2. ALWAY start off by making every distinct part a 'component'; They are easier to align etc. at a later stage 3. Make your first 'component' called assy [assembly] 4. put all canvasses under this 'assy' component just like you did Make a new component called RIB and activate it [if need be] 5. make your first drawing just like you did using the canvas 6. extrude the first 'rib' just like you did >> make it a new COMPONENT 7. move the first rib in position just like you did 8. create a pattern just like you did 9. go back in the timeline >> open the rib-sketch 10. draw ONE vertical support where you need it 11. WHILE STILL IN THE DRAWING: mirror vertical support in the drawing using the vertical plane as you reference >> finish the drawing 12. go back in the timeline >> edit the rib-extrude 13. ctrl-click new vertical supports to include them in the rib >> they too will be extruded now >> ALL IS WELL WITH YOUR RIBS NOW. All you need is a bit of BBQ-sauce

Im getting to grips with it but have found another problem I don't seam to be able to get around. I how do I copy the sketch of the from the front former of the fuselage to the back so I can made the profile changes need before I loft the skin?

Hi Laurie - Sounds like a great project that deserves completing! The way that you transfer from one sketch, or body to another sketch is by using the projection tool. This is covered in the following episodes. Let me know if you can't get it figured out and I will do my best to help out. Cheers!

SUBSCRIBED!!! I’ve even in the past searched for RC F360 stuff and never got recommended your channel. Really appreciate you doing this as I want to scratch-build a plane and use F360, 3-D printing and balsa/ply to build it. Also hoping to get my small UV-diode laser, to if-not cut the wood, at least mark it and make it easy for an X-acto blade to follow. So, pretty jazzed about what you’re doing 😊 Thanks!

Hi. Awesome project. Trying to follow along but not getting the same results. First I have never used fusion 360 or any cad program. I have been involved with model RC well over 50 years. Built thousands of kits and thousands more scratch build the scratch builds were from scaling very detailed models. What ya doing is great. Great job. I don’t know why my canvas doesn’t work out.

Was the purpose of the video to introduce a complete CAD novice to Fusion 360? Some of your viewers may get a tad frustrated without a basic working knowledge and understanding of CAD and the Fusion 360 environment. I did learn a couple of tricks, and thanks for that, but that's cause I've been messing with Fusion for a while and have some decent 2D CAD as well as CAM experience. I'll keep following, cause I'm sure I'll learn something. However, I do recommend for the neophytes to explore some very basic tutorials, just to grapple with navigating the software.

Hi Joe... All great points! You are correct, some basic understanding of CAD and Fusion 360 would certainly help. My intention with this series of videos is to give more of an introduction and behind the scenes peak into how I am going about designing my aircraft, rather than a full deep dive into CAD and Fusion 360, since I've been getting a lot of instagram questions about it. This being my very first video, I've learned a few things on delivery, so I'll be splitting the next set of Fusion 360 videos into more bite sized chunks with a little more detail to fill in some of the gaps. Your feedback definitely helps. Thanks for subscribing, I very much appreciate it! Glad you were able to get a couple of nuggets from this one as well. Cheers 🍻

Thanks for the videos, very well done and informative, yet still easy to follow. I just have one question on your workflow, I see you are modelling the internal structure to follow the blueprint, but what about the skinning material? Either balsa or composites, they will inevitably end up out of scale or did I miss something?
@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Happy to hear you're getting something out of the video! Since I was working with fairly low quality 3 view diagrams of the L-1011 I was not as concerned about being 100% accurate to scale since it would be next to impossible. Also I did not set the fuselage diameter to match the real airplane. It's a near approximation, so you did not miss anything 🙂 The skin will most likely be balsa and fiberglass. I have yet to experiment to see what will work best. Thanks for the comment and questions!

put a sheet of paper on your desk ... x goes left and right y goes up and down .. add a stack of papers to that sheet and that is the Z ... that will ALWAYS get your tools working in the proper Orientation ... calling the front view x-z is actually an error ... cad is set to be just like old school paper drafting ... x y is your desktop z is the space above and below it ... failure to do this is actually a fail mark in drafting design

When I split the body of the first former and then try to delete the second half it just replaces it with the whole body again. Hi Craig, super happy to hear that the vids have inspired you to start working on a 777! I remember flying on one when they first came out and I just remember how quiet they were back then. Nice Planes. Sorry to hear you're having this problem. Without seeing what you are working on it's really hard to tell what can be happening here. The first thing that comes to mind is that you may have two bodies in the same place that are over lapping one another. Check the component browser to see if there is an extra "phantom" part. Hopefully that helps.
