My experience with airfoil tools is that when you copy the source dat file without the name of the airfoil on top of the listed data, the spline in fusion 360 remains open at the trailing edge. If you copy and paste everything, including the name of the airfoil, the spline ends up closed in fusion, ready to use. Sounds weird, but works! I recommend to open "edit sketch" on that spline, select the outline, then right click and "fix spline".If you don't, you may accidentally move spline points while working with that airfoil, thus creating humps or dents or other "improvements"... I have to admit that my proposed solution obviously only works with the older 1.8 version of airfoil dat to spline, which I'm still using. In the actual 2.0 version the problem remains unsolved, at least for me...

@@RCCAD2VR I've installed and tested the 2.0 version on a different computer now and it looks like the problem of open trailing edges lies in the data files. The two data dealing with the trailing edge should be the same value. If the first pair reads, for example, 1,00000 0,00000 and the last pair is 1,00000 0,00010 , then ends won't meet in the spline appearing in fusion. So be sure to make both pairs the same value, before using the file in 'airfoil dat to spline'. In your case it is really a huge gap of about 4,2 mm! at the wing root rib. You can see that gap already on the airfoil tools website display of your profile and if you check the dat file, you'll see where it comes from.

Plane Simple: Including the name of the Dat file doesn't make any difference when creating the airfoil even if the first and last plot are the same!! Still get an open spline and the "Fix Spline does not fix it either.

Great teacher. Very easy to watch and learn. Some airfoils on Airfoil Database have contour defects/divots that need to be cleaned up. They also have way more spline points than needed. I usually delete most of them. There is also an add-on that removes unnecessary spline points, Airfoil_DAT_Optimiser, but more can be removed still. The open trailing edge seems to be random. Some are closed. I usually connect the upper line to the lower and correct the shape if needed, or square it off to .4mm if it's going to be 3D printed. The gap is usually small enough no adjustment is needed. Bigger variations come with sanding and finishing.

Hi Terence great series. I've been building rc models for nearly 20 years and built a Vickers VC10 airliner. It was a long project and flew quite well. One thing I have learnt over many builds is that the airfoil for the full scale model doesn't always work very well on scale models. I believe its to do with the Reynolds number. I now always use the Clark-Y on my builds apart from flying wings where I use the MH45 and 60. I built a T45 Goshawk recently and used the full size airfoil and it flew for about 20 seconds and was very unstable. A few videos on my channel show the attempts. There were some other design errors but that's another stories. I use my own design CNC Foam cutter for all my builds. So I'm redesigning in Fusion 360 with DevFus Foam and DevWing Foam with a clark-y. Just subscribed looking forward to the series Keith
@RCCAD2VR

Hello Keith, Thanks for the great comment! Yes, airfoils is a tricky and complex thing. I'm making use of the Reynolds number and using the various charts to get a good understanding of the airfoil performance. I'm on my 4th wing iteration and will use Fusion 360 to get a few tests run to get a better idea of various characteristics of the wing. The T45 Goshawk looks like it could be a fun plane, hopefully you are able to get the kinks worked out of it and get to enjoy a nice flyer. Glad you're able to get a few insights from the videos I'm putting out there. Cheers!

I'd like to add that the main thing about wingtip-washout is to prevent a stall of the complete wing at a time. The beginning stall at the root gives you time to react, time you don't have with a wing stalling completely at once. There are full sized planes without washout for better high speed performance, but those are known to be very critical to fly at low speed. The second thing I want you to think about is that you don't really have much aileron controllability with a partially stalled wing. If you're hanging off the outer wing only due to a high angle of attack and you try counter act a bank to the left by right aileron, the airflow can't follow the downward deflected left aileron any more, causing a stall and you loose the left wing you thought to lift. You often see that at take-off, when the model is ripped into the air more by the power of the engine than through lift of the airfoil, hanging there like a ripe fruit ready to fall, what will immedeately follow when you try to save it with full aileron. It's better to use rudder in such cases to benefit from the yaw-roll coupling. This is what you learn as a pilot in manned aviation...

Your videos are amazing and so helpful. I have a big problem though: I am designing a custom built aircraft, inspired by the SR71, Concorde, and Space Shuttle... so it's a 4.5ft long fuselage, complex delta wing with a 90mm EDF in the back. My issue is, I can't find too much information on the types of airfoils my inspiration aircraft used, and they essentially seem to boil down to being "flat plates" in the case of RC models. The best I have been able to find is to keep the root airfoil to about 5% thickness and the tip airfoil to a bit higher, maybe 6%. I am planning on making my own airfoils for this as it is such a complex shape and the wing is so long (2/3 of the length of the fuselage at the root). What would you do if you were me, would you move forward?

@@RCCAD2VR initially got into this about 11 years ago with people doing long range fpv (before the drone industry really kicked off) and have a weird fascination with delta wing designs. Had a go making my own foils using a hot wire and foam but found it to be fairly rudimentary when trying to use different airfoils and twist/washouts. Have had a small bit of experience using pre-preg and infusion carbon fiber so wanted to use a CAD design that i can use to make my delta wing design and CNC a mould from it. Your vids and Instagram so far have been exactly what ive been looking for. Haven’t had time to watch the rest of your videos yet as working remotely as a geologist but a few of the questions I’ve struggled with was how to make a streamline internal server connection for ailerons. Also probably a issue you wont have but how, after laying up the carbon mould, do you then fit your internal rib design into the airframe as obviously the thickness has changed by varying degrees depending how much carbon you have layered up, or do you then just have to custom hand sand your frame down to the correct dimensions to fit within the airframe (or maybe i dont even need and airframe and can just use a honeycomb carbon composite..)... Anyways bit of a rant and dont expect you to answer those questions here. Cheers for the help so far!

Couple things. 1st, I'm loving your content so far, 3rd video I've watched. 2. In Fusion, why not use the "Tangent Plane" in stead of moving your Offset Plane? When you use the Tangent Plane, you can pick ANY rib you want and even change its angle or rotation on that specific rib. And then you can use the offset Plane option to offset that Tangent Plane as many times as you need. 3. You don't NEED to expand your Plane (any of them). Once you chose that Plane you want, your sketch stays on that Plane. For instance, if you use an offset Plane and offset 4', your sketch stays 4' off your surface behind it. Your Plane could be a .25" square. You just need to select that specific Plane. You might be using it as a sanity check, but it's not at all necessary. I hope that makes sense @RC CAD Vr! Thank you buddy! Edit: I see why you used the Move command, to follow the sweeping of the wing, from root to tip.

Very good tutorial!! Just a quick comment on the airfoil. It looks like a supercritical airfoil which - in full size aircraft - makes a few compromises for good transsonic flow behavior, which we would not see in most RC models. ;) I would stick to the common Clark, NACA, Eppler Profiles or to those dedicated RC profiles e.g. designs by Dr. Martin Hepperle...
@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment and heads up! Much appreciated. You are correct regarding the supercritical airfoil. The wing on my model quickly transitions to a more favorable Clark airfoil before it reaches the engine nacelle. The actual airfoil that I'm using at the root has more favorable flying characteristics based on Reynolds number & wing WCL, than that used in the video. The flaps will also help compensate for some of this during the critical stages of flight. Time will tell if it works! Lot's of tests ahead.

@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. I'm not 100% sure if you are asking about the scaling a canvas or a sketch, or individual bodies? As per scaling the empennage, I would not recommend doing the way you've suggested in your question. It does not take into account the shape change for the vertical and horizontal stabilizer mounting surfaces. I've publish an entire episode on designing the empennage last week here kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5qUnZ-IaM5qpZY. If you are wanting to do the series in order (which I'd recommend), here is a link to the playlist kzbin.info/aero/PLWLtHp5rnDuTFa2CpkuF_eYK8-aCMMID1. I'm unfolding the various techniques from one episode to the next progressively getting a little more advanced and building on the prior tutorial. I hope that is what you were looking for. Thank you for your videos so far Terrence. I know that there are many ways to achieve the end result in Fusion360, but I'm just wondering why you don't break your design down into component parts such as Fuselage, Wing, Tail etc and also why you don't rename your sketches and construction planes to easier identification as you get more and more of them.

Can i expect the same kind of performance if i use only one type of airfoil (curtiscC-72) but with a Washout ? Thank you for thoses awsome tutorials
@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR Жыл бұрын
It depends on where you start the twist into the washout area. I would say it should be at the final angle just before the inside edge of the aileron. Check the CL v Alpha data for that airfoil to make sure you don't inadvertently create negative lift at the final washout angle when at level flight or a few degrees nose down, that could create a really nasty problem.

Hey there -- This is a known issue, one that I was not able to solve either. I remember a comment a while back regarding a hack to do it, but I couldn't get it to work. What I ended up doing to simplify the whole process is capturing a screenshot of the airfoil, placing it as a canvas then using sketch to trace the airfoil. Hi Chad, this is usually caused if you did not save the file correctly. If you open the file and then save it, the file will end up with meta data in the header that the "add-in" can't read. Make sure you right click the file link and save as. This will ensure you get the file without any extras.

I cannot select anything when I have "bodies" selected like your video, the only way I can move/rotate points are when I have "sketch objects" selected What's going on here, its very frustrating. Hopefully that makes sense.

You'll need to switch to direct modeling mode. Right now you're in parametric design mode you can find instructions how to switch here on my website www.rccad2vr.com/rc-airplane-design-build-episodes/design-rc-airplane-wings-in-fusion-360-part1 hope that helps.

An option to solve the airfoil problem is to get an image of the airfoil, add it to the workspace as a canvas, then tracing it using the spline tool. That would take it down to 4-6 points.

Hello. This is because you're in parametric modeling mode. You need to be in direct modeling mode. Every tutorial has a companion webpage that provides more info and explanations for things not covered in the tutorial. On this page www.rccad2vr.com/rc-airplane-design-build-episodes/design-rc-airplane-wings-in-fusion-360-part1 you will find instructions on how to switch modes.

You need to be in direct modeling mode. You're currently in parametric modeling mode. The link to my website in the description has a guide on how to switch between the two modes.

Watched this whole series and loved it so much decided to draw it. Got to the point of adding 'DAT to Spline' but got so frustrated trying to get it working that I just gave up on drawing the L1011. I downloaded the file from the link to 360 Apps under the 'Tool' icon. Copied the .pkg file and pasted it both under 'Scripts and Add-Ins' and neither works. I navigated to this directory. C:\Users\piemp\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\API\Scripts.......I then restarted Fusion and don't see the option for 'Dat to Spline' under 'TOOLS'.

@@RCCAD2VR I was doing it right the first time not left clicking on the link and then right-clicking to save it, but the problem i had with it is that when entering the files it was searching for "airfoil dat file". It was an easy problem to fix. I just made it "all files" which pulled up more files.
