In this video I talk about how you can start the piano as a self taught pianist. There are many reasons we being self taught is the most popular way to learn the piano, it is a cheaper way of learning and you can learn anything you want...however it does have it's disadvantages, and in this video I talk through everything you need to know to get started with the piano and avoid some of the disadvantages.

Brace yourselves, I’m about to sound like a commercial. I’m 60-years-old and have been playing music for over 40 years. I’m a guitar player and have never learned how to read music. Oh, I can look at a line of music and say “Every Good Boy Does… That’s D!” That’s the extent of my knowledge. I learn everything by ear, and I’m good at it. A couple of months ago I decided to take up piano. I also decided to learn to read music. (Two new tricks for an old dog) A problem I ran into with the music reading is that the lessons I found always involved a simple melody. I’m ear trained, so any simple melody I play one time is automatically memorized in my brain whether I like or not. So after the first pass I know what’s coming instead of actually reading the notes on the staff, AND just as you said, the exercises aren’t very long. So I bought your sight reading book. (Don’t spend all that money on hookers and blow, Matthew) IT’S PERFECT! The notes are totally random and force me to READ THE MUSIC, and there’s plenty of it! I actually enjoy the practice and speeding up the metronome. You did a really great job on this. Thanks!

It's normal to read differently as you learn a piece. I often forget how to read once I learnt it fully. It takes mental effort to read and intuitively, you skip the easy parts to focus on the parts where you're not sure about the note to play. As you learn a complex piece, you slowly stop reading as you assimilate it. If the beginner melodies are too easy, just wait until it gets harder!

Honestly thank you for this video. I’ve been a self taught pianist, but I quite literally don’t have any of the skills that you have listed 😂 I practically started as someone who just wanted to play songs from video games or anime, but as time went by and the busier I got- I haven’t been playing for a while and I do want to get back to it, but the right way. I want to learn all of these skills, and being shared these resources are so valuable to have. I appreciate you. You’re one of the reasons I’ve been inspired to play again. Especially being able to analyze and reconstruct pieces of music by ear, I find it to be quite satisfying 😂

I have been playing piano self taught for years along with various other instruments (both self taught and with lessons) and I must say learning piano self taught has has shown huge benefits to my theory knowledge and understanding. I think if someone wants to learn piano self-taught it's a good idea to have some prior music knowledge since without it it could be quite hard, and maybe learning another instrument on the side with lessons would be very beneficial.

@@nighthawk2 learning the basics is nice, but that's still ignoring my point, I already knew all the basics, but knowing sheet music helps me play and learn at speeds i couldnt without it. You can see the phrasing, pedal markings (if there are some), you can see the fingerings so you can play the most relaxed and comfortably, you can see accents, staccatos, you SEE the music. Then again, I'm a classical musician so this may not apply to everybody but this is my opinion on it

I ordered a digital piano the other day (FP-30X). It should arrive by Wednesday or Thursday, and I will starting my journey with Adult Piano Adventures All-in-One Piano Course Book 1 and The Complete Book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences. It has been 30 years since I played Trumpet at school and did grades so I am starting over. Not being able to play music anymore has left me feeling empty for years. I am sure motivation will be a struggle as I go so I plan to document my progress and hopefully I will have a nice evolution of skills to look back on after a year. I would love to just to be able to sit and play for myself, but more importantly I want to be able to play music for my daughter who is non verbal and physically disabled due to her brain being ravaged by medicine resistant epilepsy. Music and singing is one of the only ways we can connect with her and she was always at her best when we had music therapy sessions at the hospital.

Hi Matthew, I am an advanced beginner if that makes sense. I have been playing for about 8 months. I have the scales cold. I work on finger exercises to strengthen and build dexterity. I play chords and chords and chords. BIG PROBLEM. Hand independence. I can play a lot of stuf with my right hand and left hand mirroring each other. But, getting them to play independently like YOU. OUCH, it hurts. I have talked to several teachers who tell me that everyone has this problem and you need to stick with the exercises to develop hand independence. Is this sound? Is there any way that i can get this down cold? It is the only thing that is holding me back. I have watched several of your videos and WOW I really like them. Keep making more. Eryka

I can only practice one hand at a time. So my question is if I just wanted to get a different midi keyboard (on a budget!) how many keys would you recommend? I know ideally all 88 would be perfect, but would a 49 or a 61 key keyboard work?

I feel like I’m all over the place and really have no idea on what I should I be learning or practicing first. I would like to get into playing classical but also pop. What should I be practicing on a daily to get comfortable with the layout of my keyboard? Should I be learning Chords, scales, arpeggios, how to read sheet music? I’ve been trying to learn songs but only seem to learn bits of a song and never played a full song yet. Any advice is needed thank you :) also been trying finger exercises.

I can’t afford or justify spending half a grand on something I may or may not even get that into. Is there any recommendations anyone can provide around ~$100 or so? I’ve seen a lot of these “best gear for learners” videos and they all say the same but I don’t think $500 is very beginner friendly at all

If you aren’t sold on committing to learning the piano, you can often rent these for a month or two from a local music shop before committing to buy your own when you know you will carry on. This way you can work out if you want to commit but you are also learning on something that will help you. There is no real cheaper options that have 88 keys that are weighted and not sprung…but if you use it for 5-10 years then the investment per year is pretty small, it’s never been cheaper to learn the piano really with the price of digital pianos and online learning. 😊

My fundamental motivation comes from the emotions music makes me feel. It's so much better to play it than to just listen to it. Maybe find simple arrangements of musics you like to listen to. Also, learning hard pieces as a beginner takes huge mental effort and is painful to the head. You should get one simple piece ultra assimilated. So when you're tired in the evening, you have a piece that takes no effort and is relaxing. Then once you start playing you usually stop feeling tired!

I'm learning on a 300 $ "Keystation 88, Mk. 3". It's not fully weighted like a piano, but the keys do have a little resistence and are velocity sensitive. Some people will tell you that you can't learn at all on a keyboard that isn't fully weighted, but that's bull. You can still learn many aspects of playing, it's just that there will be an adjustment period once you upgrade.

😂great response! Some ppl haven't figured out the KZbin basics (you can pause or change video speeds, resolution, add CCs, etc to help you digest and process videos in the best way for you individually). Just found your channel and am amazed at how well you've thought out and organized your videos are...obviously you've put in a lot of time and effort. New subscriber, thank you for outstanding work! @@matticawood

I like that he talks fast. I think it's annoying when people talk really slowly in tutorials and stuff.
