It can and it will but your must develop a strong form underneath the "wiggle" prior to releasing the thumb from the neck.

Hi Jonathan. Being a beginner, I’m in the ‘mimicking’ phase and I notice from watching various cellists, that many of them use quite a bit of finger pad to produce the vibrato. But it seems to straighten out the finger. Have I observed correctly? How to you maintain the rounded finger in this case? I have skinny fingers and more pad helps me to widen my vibrato, but I lose my roundedness.

Don't use your wrist use your forearm EDIT: Practice with your middle finger. If you make your finger straight/intersecting the fingerboard imagine that being 12 O'clock. You need to rotate your forearm to allow your middle finger to rotate from 10 O'clock to 2 O'clock. The contact point of the finger tip to the string should be ROLLING up and down the string. Its a huge difference between guitar and cello vibrato. I enjoy playing both and can admit cello is much more challenging

Maybe because both right and left side have to be concurrently controlled, employing subtle changes. When we pizz, we tend to think much less about the right hand. So, train a passage with pizz, like a simple scale, then try it with short strokes. Simon, you genius, this is totally going to be recorded this saturday during our lesson.
