Started when I was 47, just turned 59. Got my sister into it, she just turned 53. Age is only an issue if you let it become an issue.

I'm 52 started BJJ in 2007 stop the beginning of COVID started new dojo a bunch 20-year-olds are younger. The original dojo that started with my teacher moved to Florida. And I moved 45 minutes south. After training, use of bathing Epsom salt for 20 minutes and always helps

Got back into jiu jitsu after an 18 year respite. I now am 59 and work 6 12 hour days a week and train about 4 days a week. A school I train at will have instruction followed by drills and ROLLING is OPTIONAL after class which I think is a good idea. Yes, my body is sore the next day but rolling as an option I think is a good idea for schools. Nice video!

Ha! Nice work guys. I started the week of my 51st birthday! Sore and happy sounds about right 😅. I plan to increase the number of times a week l train as my body adapts. I’ve nothing to prove so plan to take my time, train safe and have fun. I’m one of the oldest beginners at my school by a long way and there are lots of people in their 20’s training, but everyone has been really great and welcoming.

Most important thing is just finding a reasonable schedule you can stick to and build a habit of going. Also, a safe training environment. If you get injured then that’ll have a lot of consequences, not training being the least of them.

Part of the evaluation of a school has to also be the attitude of the other students. Age and profession demographics also play a huge role there. My first school was a mix of young and older folks but predominantly younger. Many of the older students were professionals and typically wanted to train carefully and learn just as much as I did. Most of the younger people had ego issues and couldn't stand having someone like me resist their techniques or even submit them. That was generally younger people and a couple of them caused me injuries by spazzing out or trying to crush me, with the exception of one or 2 older guys who had ego issues and hurt or tried to hurt me by doing the same. It also didn't help that the instructor was only concerned with expanding his McDojo and couldn't be bothered with worrying about anyone but his medal prospects so I'm glad I escaped. That and the fact that he was a terrible instructor teaching a lesser system cemented my decision to seek a school with instructors who were professional as well as students looking to improve and not just crush or injure others.

Great video/topic. I like to consider the environment of the gym (vibe, patronage, and cleanliness), teaching style, and drive time. I started doing Jiu-Jitsu at 23, but I stopped due to life (engineering degree, job, marriage, kids). Now I'm 35 and looking to get back into it (actually near Kama Jiu-Jitsu in Irvine, gonna check it out).

Awesome job Ryan Young Rules. I so need to come to texas, I lucked out and got into a decent jujitsu BJJ school. Ryan Young covers the hard questions with great raw honesty. I'm 45 but I would go to class 5 days a week cardio train 3 one week with two days of technique training then the other week I would train three days techniques two days cardio. Cardio training shrimping bear crawls break falls so on free flow.

I'm 48 and I'm starting this week. Honestly I would rather train in judo, but no judo schools in my area. I trained in judo for a short while before but the ne waza was was my favorite part, which is why I'm looking forward to training BJJ.

Be sure you’re eating well. Do my body weight exercises from a video a few months ago. Get lots of sleep. Don’t push hard on any given day. Better to stop too soon vs too late.
@stangdude55932 жыл бұрын
Ditto what Ryan said. Eat well and if you don't know how to, learn from someone. Rest well, includes consistent good nights of sleep and days off between sparring. I'm still learning when to train and when not to. Basically, if you can isolate the injured spot, go for it. If not, go to class and watch, maybe review technique with someone else who's injured. Just don't take weeks off of not even going to watch class. Also, do other activities to keep yourself engaged; stretching,, yoga, swim, etc.

In my 30s and wanna start before I get much older. My issue is every school where I live is sport instead of self defense...unless I wanna travel over an hour one way. The one exception only trains once per week at a time I'm not able to make it.... Here's hoping more open in my area soon.

William Moran I’m 55 and just stated in January. The only school within two hours or drive is sport oriented. That said i am enjoying the classes and have found it beneficial more many reasons. I was also looking at BJJ for self defense and am glad the school opened and I got started. They treat me well and the instructor is very specific about taking care of each other.
@gt71504 жыл бұрын
Start sport and try to form a little side group that goes through self defense stuff. Kama material through patreon or gracie combatives. Or break out some gloves and try to deal with a punching opponent

People later in life have 5 friends? Where do they get all of them from?
@tommy2days5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ryan for the video. I think you brought up some valid points for everyone looking to get into Jiu-Jitsu. Young and older students want to be able to connect with people who are similar to them. The gym I picked is actually the gym I started at 5 years ago. There were a few other gyms I tried out in between the time I quit and started up again. I went back to my first gym because it had everything I was looking for. I stopped going for various reasons but it wasn’t anyone’s fault but my own. Your right about connecting with similar ages, backgrounds, etc. I’ve tried other gyms where the average age of the adult class was probably 35. I didn’t feel comfortable there. Long story short is that I’m happy training back at my original gym. Thanks

Thanks for the comments guys. What exactly are you looking for with regard to old age? A lot of your being affective has to do with training with others just like you. If you’re an old guy training with other old guys, you’ll learn a lot faster and you’ll have a lot more fun doing it then you will training with younger guys. But, I want to more effectively address what you guys are looking for.

I was just being a smart ass. Your advice is good and I’ve taken it. I guess OMS might have been wanting to know about smart approaches to training, cross training with limited time (assuming you can’t always carve out time on the mat), and nutrition and body care. Thank you for making videos : I hit 50 this year and am starting up with bjj after playing Judo to my early 30s. All I can ask myself is why didn’t I do this much earlier?

That’s your demographic. Why? Kama’s got bills too!
@KamaJiuJitsu5 жыл бұрын
we all have bills. but good schools often build from referrals. friends bring in friends. before you know it, you have a big school with people who have something (major) in common. and, people who just "happen" into a studio find that there are others who think just like them and they stick around, building more onto what is already there. just happens.
