I only ran in the dark when I started out, because I was embarrassed about how slow I was. 12 years later I realise no-one cares and nor should I!

Haha this rings true for me too. Now that I’m comfortable running I still love running at night. There’s something special about being out there in the dark. Where I live I just have to watch out for coyotes.

Definitely no need to feel embarrassed when first starting out, we all start somewhere and 99% of people will respect that you’re out there trying to better yourself!

Most people really underestimate how good walking is for you, my top tip for starting running is actually to start walking more first, that will help your running no end. Then move to walk -run-walk. Same for hills walk up hills more before you run up them.

Clothing tips for beginners, charity/thrift shops usually have a good stock of technical t shirts, race t shirts, and tights etc for a fraction of the at new cost. A used running t shirt works as well as any! Invest your money in good shoes, comfortable shorts and a couple of good jackets for bad weather.

Run-walking isn't just for beginners. Maybe 1 minute walk breaks are, but if you dial it back to 30 s whenever you feel out of breath, they are great for runners of any level trying to keep a lid on things during a long run. I personally take a walk break as often as once every 5 minutes during training or once every 15 minutes during races and after two years of structured training, I've run a 3 h marathon, with walk breaks.

Good point about feeling self conscious. I remember in the beginning feeling too embarrassed to wear my new flashy white and orange Brooks running shoes so I gave them to my son and bought a black pair instead. I thought people might laugh at the old guy trying to run😂. Now I don't care and feel like a rock star 🌠😎

Trail running is the answer there, your kit always looks old after the first muddy run!

People put too much thought into starting running. I have been running for a year I bought a pair of shoes absolutely a watch and I run. I stretch and weight train but focus on time and distance on feet I don’t care about pace or complicating things with “tempo” or anything. I do hill work in my runs. You don’t need 4 pairs of shoes for different things you will figure out all these things after a while. Most important thing to help build me to complete my first 50k run was that when i wanted to quit or my mind started telling me I was done and tired I pushed through it. “I don’t quit when I’m tired I quit when I’m done” when I started and even today I would go for time meaning 30 min run. Progressively build that time weekly. I typically don’t run more than 3 hours in a training run today. Anyway your a great individual Ben I have been a fan cheers

Definitely easy to overthink it. The first step out the door is the hardest. After that it’s just one foot in front of another.

great stuff as always Ben. I was first introduce to conversation pace, when in the off season for rugby, by one of the rugby coaches. he said if I couldn't talk, I was going to fast. also great point about the phone, I have been running for a little bit, and run mostly trails in the spring through fall.., and goodness forbid I get hurt, or something terrible happen, and I had no phone.

Yeah that last bit about worrying about anyone watching, who cares if they’re watching, just think of it like this, you are working your ass off to hit goals and to increase fitness and how you feel while they are too busy sitting around doing nothing with themselves potentially judging you, they’re the ones losing in life while you are the ones laughing and succeeding.

I definitely felt self conscious at first but eventually got over it. I felt like in my odd outfits I didn't look like an athletic person, but what makes me a runner is the action and mindset, not my clothes. 😊 I try to wave to, nod to, or compliment fellow folks out walking or jogging or bicycling to acknowledge they also got out the door today.

Can definitely recommend Ballega socks and have also found that Decathlon do some very comfy shorts (they've no liner so can be paired with any suitable undies) and they have pockets too which are handy on longer runs.

Not a "new" runner, but this will be the year that i'll try to break 40 minutes 10k. Tried it a few times, but injury and bad training didn't allowed it. This time i'll use a Ben Parkes Training Plan with the Integrated Strength Training, hope this one is the one.

Gait analysis would be a good suggestion including measuring feet for sizing rather than your wrong advice of buying half or one size extra

Hi As someone who is 40 years old and started running about 2 months ago what shoes would you recommend as I also have a flat fit. And looking for shoes I could do my speed runs as well as my long runs/recovery runs. Thank you 🙏

I would recommend going to running store and see what fits you best . I believe though good all around shoes would be new balance 880, saucony ride and asic gel cumulus are good bets

Just a question about breathing when doing easy runs. Is there any benefit for aerobic fitness from breathing through the nose instead of the mouth on those long easy runs? Thanks.

After being one of many kids berrated for walking on dreaded cross country PE "lessons" at school.. it took me another 30 years to discover it's completely fine to run for a few minutes and then walk in between to build up the ability to actually be able to run any kind of distance. Thank God for Couch25K.
