How To Start Yard Rubbish Fire

I had to show some of my neighbors how burn their yard rubbish, and had another call me an ask how to do it, so there must be others who want know also. This is a common way to burn yard rubbish in rural areas.

I came searching for how to safely burn brush after reading this in the newspaper regarding our new burn center at the hospital. "Most burns Dell Seton sees are caused by someone trying to burn something like tree branches. They use gasoline instead of something that is made for starting a fire. What they don’t realize is that they are standing in a cloud of gasoline vapor. When they strike a match or a lighter, they light that cloud around them on fire. " A neighbor was severely burned by squirting a stream of lighter fluid on an already burning brush pile and the fire traveled up the stream and burned the crap out of the guy's arms. I think lonenightdiver is putting a stream of gasoline near the end?

He’s going to get some seriously hurt. You don’t need gasoline. Diesel is all you need. Flame won’t run up diesel back to your container like it will with gasoline and won’t explode the same. Just pour a Gerry of diesel over the pile (his method with a pump spray takes too long. Just pour it on, stand back a couple of feet and throw a lit piece of cardboard that’s got a little diesel on it as well and throw it in. Make the cardboard long enough you can dip in end in and keep your hand a safe distance from the flames. You can safely add diesel to the burn buy standing back and splashing it on. The flames won’t run back to your Gerry like gasoline, like I mentioned above. But please don’t use gasoline.

WARNING!!!! I loosely tried this technique and it was really scary. I was about 3 feet from serious injury. My pile was smaller but I used less gasoline, maybe only 2 quarts of unleaded . I made a fuse like he said but I should have made it longer. It sounded like a bomb went off, and created a huge blaze. Make sure you have a large clearing and there is dirt or wet ground around the burn pile . Also make sure you have a water hose handy . I am on an acre of land and there was nothing above the pile area. I suggest you use very little gas or just avoid this technique.

Diesel has a much higher flashpoint than gasoline. It is a much safer option for starting a fire between the two.
