I have been working on my brand and I can tell u. You definitely need a chemist. Even natural products and actually lots of them are dangerous for skin and human use. If you want to do a good job get a chemist.

You can learn to formulate on your own. You dont need classes that cost a fortune. You will need to do alot of research and chemistry is involved. There are wholesale website and Reddits available to get you started on learning about equipment, preservatives, sanitary practices, ingredients and even marketing. All final formulas have to be tested by you and then sent off to a lab for extra testing of microbials, bacteria, and stability testing, however this comes after much experimenting and coming up with a final formula. My suggestion would be to start out formulating dupes. Learning ingredients and how they work and tweaking then for experiments. All your ingredients can be purchased at wholesale or chemist labs online online. Also there is a free chemistry course now being offered on swiftcraftmonkey.com with a $5 monthly subscription cancel anytime! The blog and other cosmetic I formation is free just create a free account. The REDDIT is DIY/skincare.. I have been formulating for a little over a year now and I started out just like this and now I am so pleased to be able to formulate a product, experiment and learn something new every day. There are a ton of reliable resources online that are free and that will guide you every step of the way. Chemist corner, humblebeeandme.com, makingcosmetics.com, lotioncrafters.com, etc a few atmre actually cosmetic ingredient wholesalers but they offer blods and resources and formulas for you to practice with and will teach you about all the different types of ingredients, batch calculators, spreadsheets. Etc...

GiGi Merced Just for example...Do you think Blac Chyna, Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian sat in a kitchen mixing formulas and cooking up their own concoctions? I don’t think so...So how in the world did/are they able to put a product out their with their name on it? Please don’t say anything vague like they have money. I’m trying to understand what avenues did they take to spend the capital on? What company/group of people said they would help them? What is that called?

What you are saying is business 101...it's a good advice, but doesn't touch on what's truly needed. Any serious cosmetic line makes use of a large list of suppliers, chemists, and technical/marketing know how. Very difficult to do without at least some decent capital, unless you do not plan to expand beyond a single stand at a craft fair.

No, it's EXACTLY what's needed. And you use that single stand at a craft fair to prove the concept and invest back into your business. Nobody is giving you "decent capital" to start your business. So go and get started. #BTA244

Koby Lomax I know this is a year late but your best bet is to research a couple of natural hair care brands and finding the ingredients thy are common among those products. From there you'll want to look up what the ingredients do for your hair and take a gander at chemists corner. The website is a treasure trove of information that pertains to formulation of cosmetic products.

You can teach yourswlfe and save hundreds!! I formulate skincare myselfe and have learned through learning about ingredients from suppliers like lotion crafters, making cosmetics, chemist corner is a great forum to learn i make everything skin with same ingredients in top of the products! Serums, lotions, creams, toners, masks, etc and not kitchen DIY skincare. Well preserved ans formulated products. Also research research and experimenting. I can give you tons of info! Save your money!

Great Video! I am a makeup artist who is in the process of staring my own line. It's really exciting but can be nerve wrecking when doing it on your own from your kitchen lol. I have capital and ideas but I don’t how to go from there. I could easily go into my local uni and meet someone with a degree in chemistry, but if they don’t work in the cosmetic industry what good is that....I’m googling and not really finding the answer that I’m looking for.
