Am 51. I started my own farm 2.5yrs ago. Its not just young farmers watching. Lots of small farmers are second career folk that have always wanted to do this. Watching from Ireland ❤

Absolutely! It's never too late to start. Good on ya for going for it. What advice would you have for the "older" generation who are looking to start?

Keep your crop types to a minimum and have your market well sorted. Grow a smaller number of crops well. There's very little difference. But perhaps we are farming with adult children and grandchildren?

@@ryancullen6706Going on 53 and about to enter year 5 -- get into the right tools that make the physical efforts easier, sooner rather than later!!! Your joints, ligaments and muscles will thank you for an extra decade!!! Pro tip- tillage tools, with some thought, understanding, and experimentation, can be used in a no-till/low-till context. Depth control and speed control to work the soil to the same level as hand tools would achieve. Save hours and hours and wear and tear on the body!

This is a really great video gleaning 10 years of Ryans experience working closely with JM and various institutions to really dial in the most current paradigm around starting a farm and becoming a farmer in 2024! Thanks to Ryan for the help and encouragement with my farm. These conversations really help me realize how important it is to keep pushing forward to make sure our communities are feed well!

I’m already rewatching this since I missed things while I was contemplating the examples. We are starting from scratch with bare property. I’m curious what would be a good size wash & pack workstation area for 2 acres of growing? I LOVE how JM has everything on wheels inside his wash/pack setup.

Another good option is check out Curtis Stone's Urban Farming channel and book with info on how to farm on leased land. Also if you're younger you could start with something like a backyard nursery, which could fund your backyard garden, which could both scale up as you get older and more experienced.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Question though, How or can one have a small veggie stand/sell plants on there own country property and would you go about doing that or looking into that?

Curtis Stone the urban farmer always said, do it ask later! Observe if others on you concession rd have a stand. On my rd they sell organic eggs road side. There is a lot of traffic in the area going to the nearest town with grocery stores and banks,

Keep your mind open to all available markets in your area. Is there ample traffic along your road for a roadside stand? Nearby weekend farmers markets worth attending? Small independent grocers worth supplying? Restaurants? Diversity can be a key to success.
