How-to stay at a Fire Lookout in Washington👇🏻

Fire Lookouts are one of the coolest things (in my opinion) about hiking in Washington!
These fire lookouts were built in the 1900s after many fires devastated the area. Many were abandoned, but you can still experience 93 of them in Washington! (And some you can even work in for the summer!)
There are fire lookouts that you can:
• Sleep in at a first come first served basis for FREE.
• Pre-book to reserve
• Visit Only! Off Limits to sleep.
You can research where to find them on Washington tourism websites, alltrails, recreation.go v and various blogs.
First Come, First Served: if you are lucky enough to start your day early and snag a spot at the lookout, you CANNOT close the doors. You are more than welcome to drop your stuff & make yourself at home, but you still must allow access to the lookout for the public.
If you DON’T snag a first come, first served lookout, I always recommend bringing a tent as a backup plan.
Bathrooms: some actually DO have bathrooms (or privy’s) that are a bit of of a hike down from the lookout. But just in case, make sure to follow proper LNT rules for your waste- AKA bring a wag bag just in case!
What’s inside: It depends! Sometimes the lookouts have games, old gas for stoves, guest books, maps, lightning stools, sleeping bags & pillows. Each lookout is completely different!
Tip: Be careful of MICE! I recommend hanging your packs before you go to sleep to about any mouseys in your houseys.
And finally, please remember to pack out what you pack in and leave no trace 💖
Would you stay here?
Any questions?!

I've been to this lookout a couple times. One time I drank some dirty water omw up there and while I was laying in the bed in nothing but board shorts, my stomach started hurting so bad. I rolled over to the edge and for some reason I curled up to kick my legs out and jump out of bed. When I landed I had made so much effort that i released... it all slid down my legs and onto the floor. It was cold and I had no extra water to clean it up, and since it was cold I didn't want to sacrifice my jacket to wipe it up. I left cuz it smelled really bad, but I closed the door to not attract animals.

There are only a few that are first come first served like this. The rest are rentals, maintained for emergencies but closed, manned in summer, closed year round and not maintained, or just deserted and dilapidated. We’ve been to 48 lookouts across oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. Stayed the night in 13 of them, all rentals from different agencies. Our oldest was from 1890’s and only had part of the ladder and platform left. We’ve been in 100 foot steel and wooden towers, some with propane heat and some only a wood stove. They are all similar but different depending on the cab style. Some built with only donkeys for supplies and some built with modern trucks and supplies. I love them. Thanks for defending me against hate and loving my comment! I hope ALL of you get to experience one sunset at these great relics in history :)

Jokes aside, that structure doesn't have insulation or (notably) a source of heating the space - something which houses historically almost always have had, dating back to earliest examples. This building will provide shelter from rain, wind, and dust, but it will do little else to protect against temperature as-is. It is little better than a very large, very pretty tent in that sense.

I was raised a hunter and a outdoorsman. My father was a game warden. I love mother nature in the outdoors, but I have never in my entire life understood hiking to the middle of nowhere and sleeping in a tent. But that lookout certainly provided a absolutely gorgeous view and a comfortable bed. If that's what camping is I could definitely change my mind!
@iLoveTheBamx
@iLoveTheBamx 6 ай бұрын
...that is what camping is. Camping reconnects you with yourself and nature. It's a natural, restorative way of getting a peaceful and renewed feeling in your veins. Waking up to nature, greenery, a beautiful view or birds chirping is unlike anything else. Relaxing around a campfire is incomparable to any other cozy feeling. You can be comfortable and "glamp" with a air mattress or mattress pad/mat. I've been camping in groups with generators to run lights, speakers etc and we even had a full cook top. We ate so well. If you *need* electronics you can bring transportable power banks and camping showers although many sites have shower and bathroom facilities so you're not completely roughing it. Every single person should go camping at least once. You also learn things like radical self reliance, how to be with oneself etc
@k_h_nobody
@k_h_nobody 6 ай бұрын
@@iLoveTheBamx no sleeping bag no tent. That's nature. I've took plenty of naps in the woods with no sleeping bag and no tent. Try that! Not the same thing as the bed which is part of our home which is part of the foundation of civilization. If you want to reconnect with nature and be natural, poop in the woods! That's the most organic thing you can do.

It's like the shelters on the Appalachian trail. We went there camping as a kid and they had a 3 sided shelter 4.5 miles from the first campsite at Harper's Ferry I think. We didn't get the shelter the first year and had to pitch our tent. The second year we got it. I learned from the first year and packed WAY lighter than everyone else and got way ahead so my dad put someone's extra shoes in my pack to slow me down. Those "accidentally" got left behind😂.

There are spoiled douchebags living in every state in the nation. Most of us "Spoiled Californians" aren't "Spoiled Californians." If we were we wouldn't be going out in nature every chance we get to enjoy the God given beauty that is the great outdoors. Any time you feel like it please come visit the High Sierras. Besides seeing one of the most beautiful places on the planet, you will meet some of the most friendly, down to earth people as well, and they are just waiting to show you what true Californians are really like. Note: Nearly one third of the state of California lies north of the Bay Area. There are lots of wonderful people there too. And most Southern Californians aren't so bad either. ❤😁❤️😁❤️😁❤️

That sunset looks like the patagonia label. Having lived in the Patagonia for 2 years I can tell you that the Washington Great Basin/Cascades, Saw Tooth mountains look like the Argentine Andes/Patagonia. The name Patagonia comes from the spanish Pata which means paw/foot. It was named after the local indigenous tribe Patagons. The Patagons were thus named after the spanish explorers saw their footprints before they saw the natives. The powdery, dusty soil made their footprints look massively elongated. The spanish thought they were going to be really tall, but they actually just had dusty footprints.
