A tip for learning/finding balance for Horseback... Ride bareback for a bit, move WITH your horse. Gain a feel for their movements, work on balancing in a walk, then when youre stable move to a trot, and after you're balanced in a trot without bouncing everywhere, move into a Lope. If you can get up to a lope bareback, safe bet that you've found your balance point.

Like to see a western rider not saying to sit back like a cutter. Dressage, balance… love it!

I agree ! That's the best way for barrel racers to have Balance, but cutters have to sit back ❤

This helps me so so much! I am in an intermediate class and I'm currently trying to move up to the barrel class. My instructors told me I have to start working on body awareness with not locking my arms and tense up. I'm trying to get better at balance and this helped me understand so much! Thank you so so much!

This is incredible. I’m heading over to the barn, wanting to work on my balance. Knowing that barrel racers have some of the best, I searched for balance when barrel racing and found this. Hardly anything has consistently helped me keep my balance. I’ll be working on all of this, especially without stirrups! I became so focused on keeping my heels down at one point that I didn’t think about anything else balance-wise. Maybe not relying on them at all will help me a whole lot more. Thank you for this!

Been riding a long time, though very infrequently. I think I balance OK at a walk but have been unable to progress to trot. Hopefully these suggestions will help.

This is super informative! I'd love to do barrel racing but there is no where near me that does it (I'm in the UK) but it's interesting how some of the principals are the same to how we are taught to ride over here. More people should ride with their eyes closed. I sometimes do this as I am super unbalanced (just had a baby so my muscles are all over the place)as it helps to refocus and pinpoint where to fine tune my position.

I don’t know if you ride English or western but it could be one stirrup shorter then the other. Or my best guess it could be like I used to do where u put all ur weight into one stirrup. Make sure ur horse is on the correct lead too
